A. CONTROLS
===========

The basic default controls are:

Accelerate: Numeric Keypad 8
Brake/Reverse: Numeric Keypad 2
Turn Left: Numeric Keypad 4
Turn Right: Numeric Keypad 6
Handbrake: SPACEBAR

Repair vehicle: Backspace Key
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Use the credits that you've earned to repair your car in mid race!
The damage display in the bottom right hand corner of the screen shows the
current state of your vehicle. As various components get damaged they will
flash green, then red, and finally turn black.

Recover vehicle: Insert Key
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
When you find yourself lying on your roof with no way of turning over,
for a small price you can be recovered. Or if you fall off a building that
you wish you hadn't, just recover to a previous safe position.

Gear Down: 'Z' key
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
To do donuts, hold the 'Gear Down' key (ie 'Z') while in first gear.
Accelerate and start turning! Keep the 'Gear Down' key pressed as
this disables traction control, and keeps the car in first gear.

Enter/Exit Cockpit: 'C' key
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
In external camera mode the cursor keys can be used to pan the camera around
your car, as well as zoom in and out. Press both the left and right arrows
to center the camera view.

Enter/Exit Action Replay: 'Enter' key (on keypad)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Action Replay mode is just like having video footage of what you've been up
to so far. The amount of footage that you can replay depends on how much
RAM your machine has. Once you enter Action Replay mode, you will see a
row of icons at the bottom of the screen. The various rewind/play/fast
forward buttons can be activated by either using the mouse, or with the
following keys on the keyboard:

Fast forward: Numeric Keypad 6
Frame advance: Numeric Keypad 3
Play/pause: Numeric Keypad 5
Frame reverse: Numeric Keypad 1
Rewind: Numeric Keypad 4
Switch between playing forwards and backwards: Numeric Keypad 0
Go to very beginning of footage: Numeric Keypad 7
Go to the very end of the footage: Numeric Keypad 9

Change camera: Numeric Keypad *(star)
* Standard camera: normal game view.
* Panning camera: stationary camera points. TV coverage style.
* Action camera: gives gruesome closeups of all your best moments.

The red and green bar above the row of icons shows you what point you are at
through the footage.

Tip: To get the best performance out of your PC, shut down Windows95
and get yourself to a DOS prompt. Run the game from there - you
will now have some memory to play with in Action Replay. (This is
especially true if you are running Windows95 on a 16Meg machine)

You can reconfigure the controls by selecting 'Options' from the Main Menu,
and then choosing 'Controls'. Note that any changes you make to the
controls are permanent, i.e. if you quit out of the game, and then run it
again, you will still have the changes that you made.

B. TROUBLESHOOTING
===================

16MB Ram
--------
In order to ensure that those people with less than 24 megabytes of RAM can
enjoy the best features of this game, certain functions listed in the manual
are not available.

Most notably, shorter replays and the removal of the prat cam.

Playing Carmageddon in Win95
----------------------------
When you play Carmageddon through Windows95, you may find a problem with playing
the looping intro in the front end. If you do come across this problem, shut down
and restart in MS-DOS mode.

If you are playing Carmageddon in Win95 with 16MB RAM and get a "Low Memory Mode"
message, you will need to alter the DPMI memory settings for Carmageddon.
To do this, right-click on the "CARMA.BAT". Select "Properties". Select the
"Memory" tab. Change the MS-DOS Protected-Mode (DPMI) memory setting from "Auto"
to "16384".

BOOTME
------
Included on the Carmageddon CD-ROM is a utility called "BOOTME.EXE". You may
use this program to create a boot disk if you are playing Carmageddon on a
16MB machine and get a "Low memory mode" message. By following the
instructions in "BOOTME.TXT" you can create a bootable floppy disk to free up
as much RAM for Carmageddon's use as possible.

Sound Cards
-----------
If you have an ESS Audiodrive, the sound setup will not auto-detect it.
You must manually select an ESS Audiodrive from the soundcard list.

Cut-Scenes
----------
If you are playing Carmageddon and notice the Cut-Scene video is playing choppy,
restart Carmageddon and use the "-nocutscenes" command line switch. From your
installation directory (C:\INTRPLAY\CARMA), type "CARMA.BAT -NOCUTSCENES".

Network
-------
To run a network game, each machine should have a maximum install, so that all
the track data is stored on the hard disk. If the install is anything less,
each machine would require a CD to load the data. We strongly recommend that
all network games are played with computers with a full install.

On some networks after long periods of play that the network can time out while
waiting to join a game. If this occurs then quit out of Carmageddon and then
restart the program.

When running network games some hardware configurations have problems with
changing the host machine during a game. The quickest way around this
problem is to restart the game before a new host starts the game.

Special Characters in Network Play
----------------------------------
The use of special characters (@,#,$,%,&, etc.) in your name when playing a
network game may cause Carmageddon to crash.

Red Book Audio
--------------
CD-Audio is only available on the maximum install. The reason for this is due to
the amount of CD access for data the audio would continuously stop and re-start.

Running in 640x480 Hi-Resolution
---------------------------------
1. Go to the Carmageddon directory on your hard drive. Type "CD\INTRPLAY\CARMA"
(default installation directory) and hit "Enter".
2. Type "HIRES.BAT" and hit "ENTER".

Note: Hi-Resolution gameplay is recommended for users with 24 megabytes of RAM or
greater.

Thrustmaster Formula T2 - & Other Steering wheels
-------------------------------------------------
If you have a Thrustmaster Formula T2 or other steering peripheral, follow these
steps to configure them:

1. Go to the OPTIONS -> CONTROL -> JOYSTICK menu.
2. When it asks to calibrate your joystick to the upper left corner, crank the
wheel to the left and hit "ENTER".
3. When it asks to calibrate your joystick to the lower right corner, crank the
wheel to the right and hit "ENTER".
4. When it asks you to center your joystick, return the wheel to the centered
   position and hit "ENTER".
5. Next, in the OPTIONS -> Control menu, choose "Turn Left" and when it prompts
you for a key, turn the joystick to the left "JOY 1 L" should appear. Do the
same for "Turn Right" this time turn the wheel to the right and "JOY 1 R"
   should appear.
6. If you have rudder pedals, you can configure those as well. Use the brake as
your "Upper Left" caliibration and "Lower Right" as your acceleration.
In the OPTIONS -> Control menu, select the gas pedal for accelerate "JOY 2 R"
should appear and select the brake for "reverse" and "JOY 2 L" should appear.
