THE TOP THING TO KNOW

If you get an Error 47 or an Error 52 in QFG4, we have tips to
help you try to get past these errors. Look in the QFG4 section
in the "Game Specific Questions" section of this README for more
info.

                     GAME SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

Question: I am having problems importing my character from one game
into another, but it doesn't work. What can I do?
Answer: Create a folder or directory on your hard drive. Call it
"GLORY". Copy your character file into this folder or directory
from the floppy disk. If you import the character from this
folder, your hero will be transferred properly.

Problem: I keep getting the error message "Out of environment space"
installing the games in DOS.
Solution: Type PATH=\ and press the ENTER key. Now try to run
INSTALL again. When you reboot later, your PATH will return.

Problem: The Tech Support and Hint Line phone numbers listed in the
games are outdated.
Solution: The current phone numbers and addresses can be found in the
2REACHUS.TXT file found on the root of the QFG Collection CD.

Quest For Glory 1: So You Want To Be A Hero

Problem: You get an "Oops Error" message asking about the "Dag-Nab-It"
game in the Thieves' Guild in the original (16 color) version of the
game.
Solution: Don't ask about the rules of the game. The rules are easy:
Try for a bull's eye and the highest score wins.

Problem: Your hero is unable to get past the Brigands' dining room in
the 256 color version.
Solution: You must free up more conventional memory. At least 580K of
free memory is needed to get past this part of the game in the 256
color version. Rerun INSTALL from the \SIERRA\QGANTH\GQ1NEW directory
on your hard drive and choose MAKE A BOOTABLE FLOPPY DISK. Follow the
instructions to make a boot disk to free up more conventional memory.

Problem: Some of the colors in the 256 color version turn weird after
playing for a while in Windows 95.
Solution: Quit Windows and play the game in MS-DOS mode to fix this
problem. This is NOT the same as double-clicking on the MS-DOS Prompt
icon to shell out of Windows.

Problem: In the 256 color version, the screens with the Centaur
gardener and the Minotaur turn odd colors. This happens playing from
MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, or Windows 95.
Solution: When you talk to the Centaur, the screen colors will return
back to normal. There is no other fix. This will not affect your
gameplay.

Documentation Update: The documentation says your Mage's Maze bug is white.
This is correct for QG1 Original version. Your bug will be blue in the
QG1 Revised version.

Quest For Glory 2: Trial By Fire

Note: If your character can't walk anywhere in the first screen, type
"STAND" and press ENTER. Now you'll stand and walk.

Note: If you're not used to "parser" games and "can't find an icon to
do things in the game", don't worry. Just start typing your commands
on the keyboard and you'll see what you typed appear on the screen. Press
the ENTER key to have the game respond to your commands.

Problem: The afternoon hours just drag on and on while you wait for
night to fall.
Solution: Adjust the time scale in QG2 to the fastest setting.

Question: What is that "Silly Clowns" menu item?
Answer: Random funny stuff that won't affect gameplay. You'll see
King Arthur (from the "Conquests of Camelot" Sierra game) facedown in
the desert sand. You'll see the "Persian golfer" in the desert. You
also might see Harpo wandering the hallways on day 3.

Problem: You keep reading the message "You must lure the Fire Elemental
further into the alley" when fighting the fire elemental.
Solution: You must buy only one bag of incense. If you buy more than
one bag, drop all but one bag before luring the fire elemental into
the alleyway. Then, after luring the fire elemental into the
alleyway, type USE INCENSE, then DROP LAMP, then USE WATER.

Quest For Glory 3: Wages Of War

Problem: Your hero can't give the dinosaur horn to the chief, but he
won't stop moving his arms and talking.
Solution #1: Talk to the Laibon as quickly as possible and say goodbye
when you're done.
Solution #2: This can happen if your computer is running too fast for
the game. QFG3 was written before today's faster computers existed.
If your computer has a turbo switch, turn off the turbo and try again.

If your computer does not have a turbo switch, you can use a shareware
utility to temporarily slow down your computer to let the game work
better. MOSLO is a popular shareware slowdown program. You can find
it by seaching on the Internet by searching www.yahoo.com or
www.shareware.com.

To use MOSLO, shell out to DOS. Copy the MOSLO utility to the game
directory. In the game directory, type MOSLO /50 C:\COMMAND.COM
and press the ENTER key. Now start the game by typing QG3E.BAT.

If MOSLO does not help and you don't have a turbo switch, another way
to slow your computer down is to go into a computer's CMOS settings and
temporarily disable its L2 Cache but unless you know how to do this or
want to contact the hardware manufacturer for help with this, we wouldn't
recommend tinkering with the system's CMOS. If you make a mistake you may
need to contact your hardware manufacturer to get your computer to boot
up again.

Problem: When you get the dinosaur horn, you can't get back into the
Laibon's hut.
Solution: Drop the dinosaur horn. Go back into the hut. Ask about everything
until you are dismissed. Now go back inside and ask about marriage, the
Leopardman girl, the bride price, or anything else he lets you talk about.
When he dismisses you again, get another dinosaur horn and come back. This
time you are allowed in with the horn.

Problem: When you run the race in the Simbani village, you get an error
message: "Oops: you did something unexpected".
Solution: When you have to do an action like throw a spear through a hole,
click on Yesufu. This will get past the problem.

Problem: Your hero can't find the blue orchid.
Solution: Go to the tree and ask the Guardian about "wood". After
this, the blue orchid will randomly appear in the jungle.

Problem: Magic users can't levitate during the Shaman duel, and fall
into the pit.
Solution: Turn the DETAIL and SKILL levels all the way down and try
again.

Problem: Magic users can't obtain the Juggling Lights spell.
Solution: Open the gift you start the game with. It will explode in
your face. Click the hand icon (not the eye icon) on the gift wrapping to
get the spell.

Problem: Your hero won't stop talking to Arne the Aardvark.
Solution: Click the talk icon on your hero and say "Goodbye".

Problem: Thieves can't cross the chasm.
Solution: Click the hand icon on the pillar in front of the chasm
first.

Question: Where is the Thermonuclear Attack spell?
Answer: There is no Thermonuclear Attack spell in QG3.

Question: Why does my hero see weird stuff when he's starving in the
savanna, like the awful waffle walker?
Answer: He's starving. Go feed your poor hero!

Question: When you click the eye icon on the map, you see the message
"You are looking at the 'Tarna and Vicinity' map that came with your
'Famous Explorer's Guide to East Fricana.' ". Where is the map in
the guide?
Answer: There never was a map in the Famous Explorer's Guide. You
won't need one anyway.

Problem: You can't use the keyboard to put the game cursor directly
on top of something. It jumps over the thing. The mouse works OK.
Answer: Hold down the shift key on your keyboard as you press the
arrow keys to move the pointer. This will let the pointer move in
smaller increments.

Quest For Glory 4: Shadows Of Darkness

Problem: "Error 47: Not an object: $0 Script 64997/$146" message
while trying to slide down the slimy slope near the beginning of the
game.
Solution #1: In the QG4 control panel, turn DETAIL all the way down
and SPEED all the way up.
Solution #2: Guide your hero down the path in "baby steps" by clicking
the mouse an inch or so in front of the character and guide him down
the path until he starts to slip, instead of just clicking on the point
at the bottom of the screen. Once you're at the bottom, you're OK.
Solution #3: Some people have better luck by clicking the HAND icon
on the pool of green goo.

Problem: "Error 52: A script is being disposed and there is a cloned
object that is still using a class in it". Happens in the swamp while
fighting the Chernovy.
Solution #1: Click on RESTORE. Select Change Directory, then type
c:\sierra\qganth\saves\error52\dos (or c:\sierra\qganth\saves\error52\win
if you are playing the Windows version) and press the ENTER key. Select
the hero class you are playing as, then select OK. This will allow you to
get past the error without spoiling the rest of the game for you. Your
character went straight out of the cave at the beginning of the game to
fight the Chernovy and win. You can now play the rest of the game with
no problems.
Solution #2: If you get the error leaving the screen and you have
acrobatic skills, use acrobatics to jump your way off the screen. Make
sure you use rocks, daggers, or flame darts to defeat the Chernovy.
Solution #3: Before reaching the Chernovy screen, in the QG4 control
panel, turn the DETAIL all the way down and SPEED all the way up.
Solution #4: Exit the game. Rerun INSTALL and choose IBM PC
INTERNAL SPEAKER for MUSIC and NO AUDIO for SPEECH. Save these choices,
restart the game, and restore a game before the swamp. From the swamp,
go left three screens, then down two screens. Kill the monsters and get
out as fast as you can. If this doesn't work, restore a game saved
earlier and try again.

A NOTE ABOUT SAVE GAMES: Games saved while playing under DOS cannot
be restored under Windows and vice versa. If you play the game for
awhile under DOS or Windows and then decide to switch to the other,
you must restart from the beginning. If you do not know which one
you prefer, we recommend playing the game under MS-DOS.

Question: Dr. Cranium is asking for formulas. Where do you find the
formulas?
Answer: Look in the QG Collection documentation on page 30.

Question: There is French documentation for QG4 in the \DOCO
directory on the QG Collection CD, but there is no QG4 French game
on the CD. Why?
Answer: The documentation was printed in French, but we never released
a French version of QG4. We included the French documentation on the
CD in case someone wanted to take a look at it.

Problem: When you start QFG4 Floppy version (either English or
German) the screen blanks and the game never starts.
Solution: Your sound card may not be compatible with the Sound
Blaster driver used by the QFG4 Floppy version. Rerun INSTALL. Choose
PC Internal speaker for MUSIC and AUDIO, accept these changes, and try
again. The games should work now. If you want music, try selecting the
Adlib choice. Make sure you do NOT choose Sound Blaster for AUDIO.
More information: The QFG4 CD voice version should work on your
computer with no problems.

Problem: You can't solve the tentacles puzzle in the Breath room near
the end of the game, even after following the ritual instructions to
the letter.
Solution: Blow on the small BOTTOM tentacles first, not the large UPPER
tentacles. The exact sequence is: bottom right, bottom left, bottom
center, then upper center tentacle.

Problem: You can't summon Erana's staff near the end of the game to
break the crystal. The game says "You're too busy right now".
Solution #1: In the QG4 control panel, turn DETAIL all the way down
and the SPEED all the way up. Try again.
Solution #2: This can happen if you're running low on free memory.
Make and use a boot disk, then restore a saved game prior to the
point where you're stuck.

Problem: "DOS/4GW Professional Loader Error" message starting the
game.
Solution: You are probably running low on available memory. Rerun
INSTALL from the \SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4WIN35 or \SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4CD
directory on your hard drive and choose MAKE A BOOTABLE FLOPPY DISK.
Follow the instructions to create a boot disk which will free up
more memory to run the game.

Problem: "Error 106" when starting the game
Solution: You need to load your MS-DOS mouse driver before starting
the game. For more information about this, please read the "GENERAL
QUESTIONS" section of this README file.

Problem: "Unable to allocate 6746358 (or some number) bytes"
Solution: You may be running in a Windows MS-DOS shell, or you are
probably running low on available memory. Rerun INSTALL from the
\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4WIN35 or \SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4CD directory on your hard
drive and choose MAKE A BOOTABLE FLOPPY DISK. Follow the instructions
to make a boot disk to free up more memory to run the game.

Problem: "<Messager> msgType set to 0 or 579: 13,4,67,1 not found",
then "An Internal Game error has occurred...Error number 126..
\list.cpp: 420:64999:43e" while clicking on the Leshy Bush the fourth
time you talk to the Leshy (after planting the bonsai tree in Erana's
Garden".
Solution: Don't click on the Leshy bush. Click on each bush the Leshy
bush hides behind.

Question: What's the difference between using Arcade / Strategy modes
in combat?
Answer: Strategy mode means combat is in automatic mode. Arcade mode
means you have to do everything. If you click the left mouse button in
Strategy mode, you can make your hero more aggressive, use more magic,
etc. If you right click, you can enter Arcade mode at any time. If
you are in arcade mode, a button with an "S" appears to the right of
the combat bar at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on this button
puts you in strategy mode.

Question: Where is the Whirlwind spell?
Answer: There is no Whirlwind spell in QG4.

Problem: Magic Users can't cast spells at the Chernovy while gliding
in the swamp. The iconbar's magic button is dimmed out.
Solution: That's right. You can't. Your magic points are being used
for the glide spell. Once you stand on the ground, or those grassy
areas in the swamp, the glide spell ends, and you'll be able to
magically fight again.

Question: Why does a Magic User do an acrobatic flip when you try to
"Say Magic Phrase" to the magic bush clocking the way to Baba Yaga's
place?
Answer: Fighters, Thieves, and Paladins will say the magic phrase to
get in. Magic Users will need to cast the Trigger spell to get in.

Problem: The thief's dagger throwing and acrobatic attack is not
documented in close combat arcade mode.
Solution: To throw daggers, right-click on the control panel bar at
the bottom of the QG4 screen between the "retreat" button and the
strategy mode button. To use the acrobatic attack, left-click and
drag the thief onto the monster. The thief's dagger throwing and
acrobatics will not work if the monster is too close or if stamina
is too low.

Problem: "Error 126" message while throwing daggers at the ghosts
in the castle hallway.
Solution: There is no need to throw daggers at the ghosts.

Problem: "Fatal Not an Object:$0 Script 64998/$78f" message while
using the fetch spell on the ring in the Guild Hall.
Solution: You don't need to "fetch" the ring for any reason. The
ring is used by Thieves and Fighter/Paladins for improving climbing
skills.

Problem: Thieves can't open the safe in the Thieves' Guild.
Solution: This isn't a bug. It's a puzzle.

Problem: Your Sound Blaster compatible card is on an I/O address
other than 220. QG4 doesn't work with it.
Solution: Look in the \SBSCI32 directory on the QG Collection CD.
The file "dacblast.drv" is an updated SoundBlaster driver that
will recognize sound cards on I/O addresses other than 220.

For this driver to work properly, you must have the correct SET BLASTER
statement in your autoexec.bat file. For more information on this
setting, please refer to your sound card documentation.

To install this new driver, copy it to the game directory on your
hard drive. For example:

COPY D:\SBSCI32\DACBLAST.DRV C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4E35

If this is the talking version of QG4 and you did a small install,
you will need to change the RESOURCE.CFG file. Use a text editor
to modify the RESOURCE.CFG file in the game directory and add the
path to the new driver. For example:

Change this: audioDrv = DACBLAST.DRV

To This: audioDrv = C:\SIERRA\GKCD\DACBLAST.DRV

If you did a medium or large install, all you need to do is copy the
new driver into the game directory.

Problem: There is no support for your Gravis Ultrasound card in DOS
for QG4?
Solution: We have provided Gravis Ultrasound drivers that will try
to add support our 32-bit DOS Extended game Quest for Glory 4. Full
details can be found in the \GRAVIS directory on the QG Collection CD.
These drivers will not work on earlier Sierra games, such as QG1,
QG2, and QG3.

From DOS, copy the contents of the QGA's \GRAVIS directory into the
game dir. Example: COPY D:\GRAVIS\*.* C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4E35
Change to the game directory on your hard drive. MS-DOS users can
edit the RESOURCE.CFG file by using the EDIT command. While in the
game directory type: EDIT RESOURCE.CFG
Edit the RESOURCE.CFG file and change the soundDrv and audioDrv lines
to read as follows:

soundDrv  = GUSMIDI.DRV
audioDrv  = GUSDAC.DRV

SPECIAL NOTE FOR the QG CD "talking" version: If you have installed
the game using the tiny installation, you will need to include the
full path to the sound driver files, as follows:

soundDrv  = C:\SIERRA\QG4CD\GUSMIDI.DRV
audioDrv  = C:\SIERRA\QG4CD\GUSDAC.DRV

Save the RESOURCE.CFG file. If you are editing the file with a word
processor such as WordPerfect, be sure and save the file as an ASCII
file.

Before playing a game the LOADPATS.EXE program must be run with the
corresponding INI file for the game. For example:

C:\> LOADPATS -IQG4.INI <ENTER>

The -I[filename] option lets loadpats know which set of patches
to load into the Gravis card for the game.

The other .INI files on this disk are for the other Sierra 32 bit
games:

LL6.INI (Leisure Suit Larry 6 CD VESA version)
     QG4.INI (Quest for Glory 4)
     PQ4.INI (Police Quest 4)
GK1.INI (Gabriel Knight 1 disk and CD)

Now start the game according to the instructions in your game manual.

Information: Quest for Glory 4 supports the Logitech Cyberman mouse.
Here are the controls:

- To jump, lift up
- To duck, push down
- To retreat, bank left
- To move forward, bank right
- To slash, swing (turn the mouse right)
- All normal mouse controls are also supported. These are described
on page 41 of the Quest for Glory Collection manual.

Question: In the CD-ROM ("talking") version of QG4, when you speak
to the three men in the inn, they don't speak the displayed text
word-for-word.
Answer: The actors playing the parts of the three townsmen did a lot
of hilarious adlibbing. and we decided it was too good not to use.
There is one part that's wrong: When Franz first introduces himself.

SETTING MONITOR BRIGHTNESS LEVEL in DOS: On some monitors, you may
find the video brightness to be a little too dark for your tastes. If
this is not due to the brightness control setting on your monitor
being set too low, or you do not wish to change this setting, it is
possible to change the default brightness setting in the game
configuration file. To change this setting, edit the file
'RESOURCE.CFG' in the game directory using any text file editor, such
as the DOS EDIT program (just type EDIT at the DOS prompt). Go to the
line that says 'brightness = 0', change the 0 to a 1 and save the file
to the game directory. If this is still too dark for you, try 2, 3
or even 4 for an extreme increase in brightness.

Problem: "BYTES CAN'T BE ALLOCATED" error message in MS-DOS only.
Solution: Edit the file 'RESOURCE.CFG' in the game directory using
any text file editor, such as the DOS EDIT program (just type EDIT at
the DOS prompt). At the end of the file, add the line
'STATICMEMORY = 250K'. The default for this setting is 200K so if
250K doesn't do the trick, increase it again.

ISSUES WITH THE AUTOSAVE FEATURE: If the Autosave feature of the game
is causing any kind of unusual problems, we recommend that you turn off
the Autosave feature in the control panel. Since this is a specialized
save of the game, we sometimes have encountered unusual side effects of
using this feature.

                         GENERAL QUESTIONS

Question: You keep climbing trees or throwing rocks, but your
character sheet stats always stay at "0" for CLIMBING and THROWING. Why?
Answer: If you have "0" skill in something, you'll NEVER improve in
that skill, no matter how hard you practice. Your character is
given a chance to acquire new skills before the game starts. If you
didn't assign any points to Climbing or Throwing, then your hero
won't be able to climb or throw for the entire game.
More Information: You won't be able to acquire all the skills with
the limited "pool" of points at the beginning of each new game. Pick
and choose wisely, because it will affect how you complete the games.

Question: Do you need the QG Collection CD in the drive all
the time?
Answer: Not for QG1, QG2, QG3, and QG4 non-voice versions,
since these are installed to your hard drive. You will need
the QG Collection CD in the drive for the voice version of QG4.

Question: Do you have to install the games to your hard drive?
Answer: No, but we set up the games to install to your hard
drive anyway. The games only require a few megabytes of hard
drive space. Most of the QG games have never been programmed
to run directly from CD-ROM.
For Your Information: If you ran the game from the CD-ROM, the
default saved game directory would try to save to the CD-ROM
drive and display an error message "Your save game directory is
full". If you ran the games from the CD-ROM, and you have a
Roland MT-32 or PAS-16, you couldn't pick these sound devices.

Question: You've been saving only one saved game as you play,
and now you need to go back to an earlier point in the game, or
someone erased your only saved game. Now what?
Answer: Each QG game allows you to make lots of saved games
in lots of different places. You'll have to restart the game
from the beginning. If you save a game as "Jester's Game", then
want to save again after defeating the Wednesday Monster, save a
new game called "Defeated Wednesday".
More Information: Before you restart from scratch, there's
something you may want to try first. We've included saved games
created on this QGA CD when we tested the QG Collection to
assist you in getting past problems. Try to restore the saved
games found in the \SAVES directory on the QG Collection CD.
There is no guarantee that these will work properly on your computer,
but it won't hurt to try.

Question: You've been saving lots of saved games, and have run
out of room to save more games. You don't want to delete or
overwrite the saved games you currently made, or another person
wants to play from scratch and make their own saved games.
What can you do?
Answer: Each directory can hold 20 Sierra saved games. If you
change the saved game directory to another location, you'll be
able to save 20 more saved games.
Example: Mom wants to play QG2. Before she starts the game,
at the MS-DOS prompt, type the following:

C:
CD\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2
MD MOM
CD MOM
MD 1
MD 2
MD 3

This will create a C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2\MOM directory with
three subdirectories 1, 2, and 3. This will let Mom save 60
saved game positions. Now let's say Dad wants to join in the
fun. Type the following:

C:
CD\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2
MD DAD

This will create a C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2\DAD directory that
will let Dad change his saved game directory from C:\SIERRA\
QGANTH\QG2 to C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2\DAD to save his games
separate from Mom's saved games.

Problem: The game says you need more memory to run the game, but
you have 8 meg of memory installed in your computer. Why?

For Your Information: Most of the QG games are MS-DOS based. They
use MS-DOS type memory called "conventional" or "base" memory. This
is the first 640K of memory installed in your computer. If this
memory is being used by something else, like software drivers for a
mouse, a CD-ROM drive, a sound card, a scanner, or Windows, there may
not be enough free memory to run the game.

QG1old and QG2 require 512k (out of 640k) of conventional memory.

QG1new and QG3 require 580k (out of 640k) of available memory.

QG4 MS-DOS version uses a DOS extender which may run fine as long
as there's plenty of extended memory free (but on some computers it
may require 540k of base memory anyway).

QG4 Windows version uses the Windows memory manager, so as long as
Windows has enough memory and a swap file, it should run fine.

Solution: The fastest way to run the game is to make and use a
bootable floppy disk. Look under the "Out of Hunk" question in this
README for more information to make a boot disk.

Question: Why is there no speech in some of the QG games?
Answer: The only QG game with speech is Quest for Glory 4 CD-ROM
voice version. QG1, QG2, QG3, and QG4 floppy version were
never designed for speech.

Question: You log onto the Sierra BBS or an on-line service like
Compuserve or America On-line and notice patches for the QG games.
Do you need to download and use these patches?
Answer: No. All the current patches for the QG games are already
installed on the CD-ROM. The only patches you would need is if the
patch name or description said it was required for the QG Collection.

Problem: "Can't create output file" or "Not enough space" during
installation.
Solution: You need to free up more hard drive space before instal-
ling the game.

Problem: Your mouse doesn't work in QG1, 2, 3, or the DOS version of
QG4. You get an error message "No mouse driver was found in MS-DOS"
starting the games. However, the QG4 Windows version works with
the mouse.
Solution: This means your MS-DOS mouse program was not loaded
before the game started. Follow the instructions in this README to
make a boot disk. This will automatically find and use your mouse
driver for you.
More Information: The games are set up to use a mouse if a DOS-based
mouse driver is loaded. The confusing part is Windows will use a
mouse anyway, since Windows has its own mouse driver which MS-DOS
can't see or use. MS-DOS needs a mouse program to be loaded before
it can use the mouse. To see if a mouse program is hidden on your
hard drive, type "DIR \MOUSE /S /P". Let's say you see:
   Directory of C:\MSMOUSE
   MOUSE COM
   Directory of C:\WINDOWS
   MOUSE DRV
   MOUSE INI
A mouse program will end in ".COM" or ".EXE", so the mouse drivers
in C:\WINDOWS in this example won't do. In this example, to run
the mouse driver in the MSMOUSE directory, type
"C:\MSMOUSE\MOUSE.COM". You should see a message saying your
mouse is now enabled. You can now play the games.

Problem: You pick up something in QG3 or QG4, but it doesn't
appear in your inventory.
Solution: If you have more than 18 items, you need to scroll or
page down in inventory to see the extra objects.

Problem: "This game was saved under a different interpreter" when
restoring a saved game.
Solution #1: If you have saved games from the floppy version of the
QG games, you may have problems using them with the QG Collection
games. This is because the QG Collection games have all the patches
and updates installed. Your saved games may have been created with
the unpatched versions of QG and are therefore incompatible.
Solution #2: If you copied the {gamename}.CAT or {gamename}.DIR file
from a friend or another computer but didn't copy the {gamename}.000,
.001, .002, etc. files, you'll get this error message. Make sure you
have all the saved game files before trying to restore.

Problem: Running the games in Windows, the colors on the Sierra logo
at the start of the game look weird, or when you Task Switch back and
forth, the colors in the games are messed up.
Solution: You'll notice that the game itself will run fine. The
colors on the Sierra logo use "palette cycling". This allows us to
make colors sweep across the Sierra logo. If you're running in
Windows, the video hardware may not handle to color animation
properly. As for the colors not restoring when you Task Switch,
there is no solution to this. The games' colors are set up when the
game starts. When you Task Switch out of and back to the game, the
game's palette is not restored. Don't Task Switch in the middle of
the game. If you quit, then restart the game, the colors will be
back to normal.

Problem: You see an "Out of Hunk" error message
Solution: If your computer is close to the minimum "free memory" to
run this game, you may experience slowdowns in some areas or receive
the error message "Out of Hunk". If this occurs, try running the game
from a boot disk. To check free memory, type "mem" from MS-DOS.
If the "largest executable program size" number reported is less
than 583,000, you may need to use a boot disk.
Create a Boot Disk: Sierra has included a boot disk maker with the QG
Collection CD. You can access the boot disk maker from the MS-DOS
prompt. If your CD-ROM drive is D:, type one of the following commands
in lowercase letters:
d:\bootdisk and press ENTER (for QG1, QG2, and QG3)
d:\bootdisk -p and press ENTER (for QG4 non-voice versions)
d:\bootdisk -c -p and press ENTER (for QG4 voice DOS version)
d:\bootdisk -c -w and press ENTER (for QG4 voice WIN version)
If you want to see all the bootdisk options, type d:\bootdisk /?
and press ENTER.
For Win95: View the file "BDWIN95.TXT" located on the QG Collection
CD for more information.

Question: Why don't the games' volume control work for PC Internal
Speaker?
Answer: The PC Internal speaker has two options: Loud and Off.
The games' volume control is for sound card control, such as
the Sound Blaster and Roland MT-32.

Problem: "Unable to initialize audio hardware" or "Error number 29
..\audio.cpp:1160:0:0", then the game quits.
Solution: This means your sound card is not compatible with the
QG Sound Blaster drivers. Rerun INSTALL or SETUP and choose NO AUDIO
for the AUDIO choice. You'll still get the music, but this may prevent
conflicts playing digitized sound effects like doors creaking. If you
still have problems after choosing NO AUDIO, rerun INSTALL or SETUP
and choose IBM PC Internal Speaker for MUSIC.

Problem: Random lockups when certain sounds play.
Solution #1: For MS-DOS games, check if your SET BLASTER environment
variable is enabled and at the correct setting. To check this, at
the C: prompt, type SET and press <ENTER>. You should see a line
that says BLASTER = A220 I7 D1 (or something similar). If you do
not see such a line and your sound card is on Address 220, IRQ 10,
and DMA 1, at the C: prompt, type SET BLASTER = A220 I10 D1 and
press <ENTER>. This line tells MS-DOS how to access your sound
card and may prevent lockups.
Solution #2: If you have a Sound Blaster 16, check to see which
DSP chip is installed on your board. To do this, type the following
CD\SB16
DIAGNOSE
When you press ENTER a few times, the DSP version is displayed on
the screen. We've noticed some lockups using the Sound Blaster
driver with DSP version 4.05, especially during the opening cartoon
in QG3 when Ad Avis falls from the balcony if you are a Fighter.
In this case, you can skip the opening cartoon. If you are having
problems elsewhere, go to the game directory (such as
C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG3) and run INSTALL. Choose Adlib for MUSIC
and NO SOUND for AUDIO, accept these changes, and try again.

For Your Information: The Quest for Glory Collection contains a list

Miscellaneous Computer Peripheral / Software Manufacturers. To view
this file in Windows, run SETUP.EXE, select SUPPORT, click on CONTENTS,
then select CONTACT INFORMATION. To view this file in MS-DOS, type
EDIT D:\CONTACT.TXT and press ENTER (if your CD-ROM drive is D:).

RUNNING MS-DOS GAMES IN WINDOWS
Many customers want to run our MS-DOS based games in Windows. Some
have no problems doing this. Others have lots of problems doing this.
Here is a list of common questions and answers we have been asked before:

- Are there Windows-specific versions of QG1, 2, and 3 ? No.

- What kind of problems might happen? Windows and MS-DOS might fight over
sharing the sound card and memory, preventing the games from running,
or making the games run very slowly.

- Why can others run the MS-DOS games fine under Windows? Each computer
is set up differently. One type of sound card might share tasks differ-
  ently than another.

- What can we tell you to make the MS-DOS games run better in Windows?
First, don't make huge changes to your system. It's working fine now,
and that's the way we want to leave it.

Insufficient memory problems: If you are using Windows 95,
you can configure each game's icon to set up the computer's memory.
If you are using Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups, you can make a
boot disk to boot Windows with more available memory.

Hardware sharing problems: You could go to the hard drive directory
where the game is installed, rerun INSTALL inside that directory and
try ADLIB or IBM PC INTERNAL SPEAKER to try to avoid sound card conflicts.
If you have Windows 95, you can reboot to MS-DOS mode to avoid conflicts.

If you have more questions, please read the README.WRI file on the QG
Collection CD for more information.

SOUND CARD CONFIGURATION AND SOUND ISSUES

MS-DOS and PAS: If you are using a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 or Plus
card and experience problems during the game, try running the
PAS SETUP software and try selecting a DMA setting of 5. MediaVision
has suggested that you may experience better performance at this
setting. If you still experience sound problems, re-run the INSTALL
utility from the game directory and select "Sound Blaster" as your
audio device. Selecting Sound Blaster will utilize the PAS card's
built-in Sound Blaster emulation for digitized audio effects.

If you are using a Pro Audio Spectrum Plus sound card, you will want
to run the 'SB_ON' program before you start QG4. You should do this
each time you play the game to ensure that you are getting the best
possible sound.

DOS Mixer Control, especially for QG4 CD voice: The game's control
panel can adjust the volume control in the game. If you need more
control, most sound cards' speech and music volume can be controlled
separately through software provided by the sound card
manufacturer. Here is a list of some common sound cards' mixer volume
control commands in MS-DOS.

Sound Blaster 16:
Type C:\SB16\SB16MIX

Vibra 16 in AST Advantage:
Type C:\VIBRA16\MIXERSET

Sound Galaxy 16 in Packard Bell:
Type C:\SOUND16A\UTILITY\MIXTSR or type C:\SOUND144\MIXTSR

Ensoniq Soundscape:
Type: SSINIT

Compaq Presario CDS 524, 920, etc.:
If DEVICE=C:\CPQDOS\VOLCTRL.EXE is in CONFIG.SYS on the boot disk, then:
Press CTRL-RIGHTSHIFT to increase volume
Press CTRL-LEFTSHIFT to decrease volume

Proaudio Spectrum Family:
Type PAS * to bring up the mixer controls
Press CTRL-ALT-U to increase the master volume level
Press CTRL-ALT-D to lower the master volume level

Sound Blaster 8 bit:
No software control. Adjust thumbwheel on card.

Thunderboard:
No software control. Adjust thumbwheel on back of card.

                           TROUBLESHOOTING HELP

A collection of saved games was included on the QG Collection CD to
assist Technical Support in troubleshooting problems in the QG Collection.
These can be found for each QG game in a directory called \SAVES on the
game CD.

Please note that when saved games are made, it saves the environment,
memory setup, heap space, and lots of other tiny but important information.
You may or may not be able to use the saved games provided with the CD on
your particular computer. However, we've successfully restored and tested
these saved games on several computers. If you can't use the saved games,
you'll see the error message "This game was saved under a different
interpreter".

Each directory can hold only 20 saved game positions, so we have included
several subdirectories containing saved games in critical game spots.

What? You mean there's more?

You bet there is! We've decided to share some handy dandy information with
those of you who got this far in the README file!

This information is not a walkthrough for each game; it will not tell you
everything you need to do. However, it will tell you about those little
things you always wanted to know.

                            GENERAL INFORMATION

There are 7 magic spells in QG1.

There are 3 extra spells in QG2.

There are 5 extra spells in QG3. There is no "Thermonuclear Spell" mentioned
in the original documentation.

There are 8 extra spells in QG4. There is no "Whirlwind Spell" mentioned in
the original documentation.

                           QUEST FOR GLORY 1

Magic Users always start with the zap spell (that "electrifies" a dagger).
They can purchase the open, fetch, and flame dart from Zara's magic shop.
They can use "open" to get the calm spell under the rock in Erana's Peace.
They can ask the Meeps for "detect magic" spell, and the hermit for "trigger".

If you eat mushrooms in either version, you'll hallucinate. If you eat
them again, you'll die.

Right-click on the scorpion at the beginning menu of QFG1 original version
for a cute message about finding the first bug in the game.

You can hear noises coming from boarded up house in town near the Dragon's
Breath Inn, but you cannot get into this house.

Thieves can break into the old lady's house and the sherrif's house in
town at night. Otherwise, you cannot get into these houses.

Every so often at the lake, you can see a submarine from Codename:Iceman
(in QG1 original) or the dolphin from EcoQuest (in the QG1 remake). You
may also see the Loch Ness monster.

You can get rid of the Antwerp. Type "Kill Antwerp". The Antwerp will
bounce off the screen. Exit the screen. Just before the Antwerp falls on
you, type "raise sword" or "raise dagger". The Antwerp will split into
5 cute little baby Antwerps. In the VGA version, click the sword or dagger
on the falling Antwerp. In QFG4, Dr. Cranium mentions this Antwerp
population explosion.

A few questions and answers to get past the gargoyle to see Erasmus, in the
original typing version:
Q: "What is your quest" A: "To be a hero"
Q: "What is my favorite color" A: "Purple"
Q: "What is the Baron's daughter's first name" A: "Else"
Q: "What is the Thief's password" A: "I don't know"

The Mage's Maze game requires using a mouse to have a chance to win it.

In the Mage's Maze, if your spells don't last long, this means you have
low experience in casting that spell. You'll need to practice those
spells, then challenge Erasmus again.

You can't get into the Goblins' Hole (the forest area where there are
lots of hiding Goblins).

The password "Hiden Goseke" means "hide and go seek-ee"

Here's a little bit of trivia for you: Talk twice to the chained bear in
the cave. He'll tell you about 'Ditto' Realty, "...because we've sold
them so many times." This is an inside joke referring to the Talking Bear
statue outside Ditton Realty near the Sierra office in Oakhurst CA.

Type "PICK NOSE". You'll die if your lockpick skills are less than 40.
In the VGA version, you can click the lockpick on yourself to do this.
You can also type PICK NOSE in QFG2.

Baba Yaga will tell you to get the mandrake root from the cemetery at
midnight. Press CTRL T to get the time in the game. If it says "The
night is still young", it's too soon. If it says "It is the middle of the
night", now it is time to pull the root. The root will shrivel and
disappear if you pull it at the incorrect time.

In the original 16 color version of QFG1, when you're in the Brigands'
yard, one screen past the Minotaur, you'll need to type "step over rope"
to avoid triggering the tripwire near the top of the screen. In the
256 color remake, just click your hand on the wire to avoid it.

Here's how to beat the EGA original version of the brigands' cafeteria:
- "CLOSE DOOR"
- Walk over to the chair in the upper right
- "PUSH CHAIR"
- Walk over to the candles
- "PUSH CANDLES"
- Walk in front of the big table
- "JUMP ON TABLE"
- "OPEN DOOR"

The VGA version of QFG1's cafeteria room requires a slightly different
solution:
- HAND on lower right door to close it
- Wait to see the 3 brigands look through the door and leave
- HAND on upper right chair to clock upper right door
- Wait for the 3 Stooges to get near the candelabra
- HAND on candelabra to block the 3 Stooges
- Walk to the middle of the table
- HAND on the table to jump up on it
- HAND on rope to kick Stooges, kick upper left door shut
- Hand on other upper left door to exit to Yorick's maze.

What is the "brigands' cafeteria"? It's the dining room with lots of
tables and a sign on the wall that says "ber alles!".

In the brigand leader's room, if you don't take the mirror before exiting,
you'll automatically be taken to the castle for the ending, but you'll be
told that Baba Yaga's curse is still on the Baron. If you take the mirror,
you'll exit the secret passage and will be able to walk to Baba Yaga's
hut, or go to the castle yourself.

There is an unsupported secret debug mode in the original QFG1 typing version.
Type RAZZLE DAZZLE ROOT BEER and press the ENTER key. Now press the ? key
to get a list of commands. Please note: many people have had a lot of fun
playing with the cheat commands, but when they export their character at
the end of the game, they'll have problems importing into the next game.
The cheat changes the stats of the character. This debug mode is not
supported. It is only mentioned for those who like to fool around with the
program.

                             QUEST FOR GLORY 2

The original documentation said "Your Saurus will fight for you", but
yours runs away instead. However, it's not a true saurus; it's an enchanted
man.

A newly created magic user has 7 spells: open, detect magic, trigger, zap,
calm, flame dart, and fetch. During the game, this character will have
the chance to purchase (from Keapon Laffin's magic shop): levitate, dazzle,
and forcebolt.

A newly created fighter with magic assigned during character creation will
have 5 spells: open, zap, calm, flame dart, and fetch. For this hybrid
character to complete the WIT tests without locking up, he will need to
purchase the following spells (from Keapon Laffin's magic shop): trigger,
detect magic, levitate, dazzle, and forcebolt.

If someone wonders where the "Pot of dirt" came from in inventory, it
appears after you talk to Keapon Laffin about earth. He'll give it to you.

From Corey Cole on Compuserve, Friday July 19, 1996:
" The 'silly clowns' option came up because the programmers were sitting
around late one night and someone mentioned how all the productivity software
(spreadsheets and stuff) always seemed to have at least one menu item that
did absolutely nothing. (I guess the idea was that they would implement
those features in later versions.)

So we resolved to have a menu option in QG2 that did nothing. I fear I
spoiled the purity of the concept a bit by making some of the sillier
encounters and death animation dependent on whether Silly Clowns were
present. :-) "

There is no need to type "USE STRENGTH" to force your way into the Air
Elemental to drop the earth into it. Just walk into the Air Elemental if
you're strong enough.

I believe you can travel to the evil city of Raseir before Day 17. You'll
have to have at least 5 waterskins filled with water, a saurus, and plenty
of food. It also doesn't hurt to have your fighting skills built up, as
you will encounter enemies along thw way. Keep walking south in the desert
until you reach the OTHER impassable mountain range. Then you can walk
either left of right to reach the city. However, when you reach it, you'll
be turned away because you do not have a visa. On Day 17, you'll
automatically travel to Raseir and will THEN be allowed to enter.

In Trial by Fire, Ad Avis was actually named in honor of Bill Davis.
Al Scurva was Bill Scurvin, and Kaveen was named after Rick Cavin (the
head of Production at the time). The evil city of Raseir was an anigram of
Sierra. Incidentally, if you wander the darkened empty Sierra Oakhurst
hallways at night, you can see the resemblence.

I wonder how much of this information will end up on someone's web page
or QFG FAQ? ;-) A lot of this information was hidden on the original QFG
Anthology in the TS.001 file in the \PATCHES directory on the CD.

After the earth elemental is defeated by the Fighter, Uhura may start giving
you crumpled notes from an unknown person on different days. The notes
usually appear on days 13, 14, and 15, but may appear on different days.

The first note will say "If you know what's good for you, you will obey
orders. We will leave them here. If you don't follow them, you'll be sorry.
We are watching you."

After you defeat the Air elemental, the second note will say "Tomorrow night
is your last night. You'll get your final orders then. Be seeing you."

The next day, Uhura will give you the final note "At nightfall tonight, go
to the door at the end of 'Saif Darb' off 'Askeri Darb'. Obey, or you'll
regret it".

The problem is, these directions are inaccurate. You need to go to the
opened door at the end of Askeri Darb at night. This will start the Eternal
Order of Fighters test. You'll be chained to the wall and will have 10
seconds to break the chain and fight the man. Even if your strength and
agility are at 150, you'll still need almost all 10 seconds to break free
once you type "BREAK CHAINS".

The Astrologer's poster says "peek a boo, I see you".

If you buy the X-Ray specs from Keapon Laffin, you can wear them near the
end of the game before giving the princess (Zayishah) your spare set of
clothes to sneak a peek through the veil when she changes.

The elementals appear on the following days (roughly):
Day 5: Fire elemental outside Katta's Tale inn
Day 9: Air elemental in Palace Plaza
Day 12: Earth elemental north of Fountain Plaza
Day 15: Water elemental in Fountain Plaza

On Day 17, you will travel via caravan to Raseir.

To become a Paladin at the end of QFG2, you must have over 75 Honor Points
by the end of the game. You cannot do any of the following:

- Disturb or kill the Griffin
- Break into rooms in Shapeir
- Take money from Omar's purse before returning it
- Be reminded by Uhura to return Rakeesh's sword (he only loaned it to you)
- Kill the opponent at the Eternal Order of Fighters test
- Don't use the X-Ray specs to peep at the princess changing clothes
- Kill the disarmed Khaveen

Also, make sure you do the following:

- Be polite to Aziza so you don't get kicked out of her room
- Give money to the beggar more than once
- Help Julanar the plant-woman
- Find and return Omar's purse
- Free the enchanted man in the cage in the desert
- Give back Rakeesh's sword once you finish using it
- Let Khaveen get his sword back after you disarm him

There is an unsupported secret debug mode in QFG2. Type SUCK BLUE FROG and
press the ENTER key. Now press the ? key to get a list of commands. Please
read the disclaimer about the "RAZZLE DAZZLE" debug mode in QFG1 original
version. Debug modes let you play around with the program; they are not
supported or fully documented. You'll have problems using them to create
"super" heroes to export into other games.

Here's a little bit of trivia: One of the programmers for QG2 made up the
phrase for the debug command; I'm not sure what this means, but there is a
"Blue Frog" cafe within an hour's drive from Sierra Oakhurst.

                            QUEST FOR GLORY 3

Apothecrary (Drug store run by a hippie):
Save your game. To see an Easter egg, buy a tinderbox from the bazaar.
Click the tinderbox on the hookah pipe. Sit and toke three times.

By the way, that's not Corey Cole in the Apothecrary. It's one of the
programmers.

The thief doesn't have any place to practice his lockpicking except for a
little lockpicking when he sees a cage. He can practice a lot of sneaking
through the jungle. If you make the thief sign to the rope maker, he
can increase your agility if you pay him 50 royals.

If you have problems freeing the caged dispelled Leopardman girl, even
after paying the Laibon's bride price and giving all gifts to the girl,
make sure Uhura is not on duty watching the cage. Exit the screen,
then go back. Once a different person is guarding the cage (one who does
not speak your language), try releasing the girl.

Don't flirt with the waitress in the Welcome Inn if you want to be a Paladin.
Offer the thief money and food to increase your Honor. At the thief's trial,
defend Rakeesh to gain Honor.

Try not putting out your campfire. You'll see a message from Smoky the
Elephant saying "Only you can stamp out savanna fires".

For thieves having problems defeating the Demon Wizard near the end of the
game: Climb the northwest pillar. Throw your rope onto the northeast pillar
and walk across the rope. The Demon Wizard will throw fire at the pillar.
Throw the grapnel to the east pillar, just below the northeast corner. Your
rope will start burning. Walk to the fire and jump over it. The fire will
start buring up your pillar; throw your grapnel at the Demon Wizard to win
the game.

From Corey Cole on Compuserve, July 19, 1996:
"The trick to combat in QG3 (and to a lesser extent in QG2) was for your
character to 'plan' his attacks. A timer noted how long you waited
between attacks -- you got minuses if you kept attacking quickly and
never parrying or dodging, and pluses if you waited a second or two longer.
This is supposed to simulate waiting for an opportunity. In QG1 and to
some extent QG2, you could just attack continually and never dodge or parry;
it made those skills almost worthless. QG3 has a better balance of fighting
skills. But I like the QG4 combat best, personally. :-) "

                           QUEST FOR GLORY 4

The hawk that flies around in the forest is not following you. You cannot
interact with it. It's just a graphic effect.

Adventurer's Guild:
                Ask the Burgomeister for key.
The Magic User won't see the grappel and rope

Thief Safe:
Look at the safe to see the word "FILCH".
The combination is "FILCH", the safe manufacturer's name
Only certain letters appear on the dial of the safe.
                | B | D | F | H | J | L
Click on F, then the dash between H & J, then L, etc.

Dr. Cranium:
You can skip the door puzzle and antwerp maze; click on ?

Rusalka:
Only a Paladin can help her by: saving the gypsy, get
invited to the gypsy camp, talk to the gypsy fortuneteller,
get some Rusalka hair, buy the store broom, use hair on the
broom, and beat broom on Janus' grave at night in the
                cemetery.

Gypsy Camp:
If you saved Igor and the gypsy Davy, but you still are
not welcomed into the gypsy camp by the wolves, this means
you were not invited yet. You'll need to see the freed
gypsy at the town gate during the day to be invited to camp.

Faery Queen:
Only Magic Users will see the Faery Queen.

The Queen only appears at night, and always one screen
                        south of Erana's Garden.

The Queen will appear 3 times: When the fountain appears,
when the fake staff or Erana appears, and when
you have the true staff of Erana after saving Tanya

I believe you have to have had enough dreams about Erana
by sleeping in the Gargen or by the staff in town
                        before the Faery Queen appears.

If the Faery Queen doesn't appear, this means you need try
again later that night, or you need to do something
else like talk to Magda the Gypsy Fortuneteller,
make sure you answered the Leshy's last riddle,
make sure Katrina gives you the Frostbite spell
outside the town gate at night, or go see Katrina
in the castle and get "geased" to go find all 5
rituals. Remember: If you are not a magic user, the
                        Queen will NEVER appear.

You must have the Frostbite spell before you can fight the
                        Faeries.

Magic Users must defeat the Faery Queen in battle before
you can save the little girl Tanya.

Where you will find the answers to Leshy's riddles:
#1: "Guess my name". Read about Leshy's name in Adventurer Guild's
            books

#2: "Bonsai in trouble". Get bonsai bush from goo, plant in Erana's
            garden

#3: "Who lives in the lake?". Go to the lake and talk to the Rusalka

#4: "Who hides her hut behind sticks?" Say "magic phrase" or trigger
bush to Baba's place, then talk to the skull

#5: "Name of killer bush". Learn about Elderbury Pie from Baba Yaga.

#6: Magic Users only: "What do the faeries seek?" Talk to faeries
            about Erana's staff

If you cannot tell Anna she's a ghost, or cannot tell Nikolai about the
ghost of Anna, this means you are clicking the mouth icon on these
characters to ASK them things. You need to click the mouth icon on your
hero to TELL them things.

Jester and Wednesday are my favorite monsters.

To see the Domovoi in the inn:
When night falls, sleep in 60 minute increments in your room

Look at the time to see when the moon is at its high point

Leave your room and look for the green-blue Domovoi above fireplace

If it's not there, go back and sleep another 60 minutes

If it doesn't appear as the moon is about to set, sleep until morning
and try again the next night

If the big brown monster Toby keeps slamming Tanya's bedroom door on you,
this means it is still daytime. He will only let you in at night, since
the little girl he protects is a vampire and sleeps during the day.

If you cannot tell the vampire girl Tanya about Erana's Staff, keep reading:

To save the little vampire girl Tanya:
Save Igor the gravedigger (when he is stuck in the grave)
and ask for the crypt key

One random day see freed gyspy at town gate and get
invited to visit the gypsy camp

Talk to the gypsy fortuneteller Magda about Erana's staff
                        and the Destiny spell

Overhear the mother crying about Tanya in the inn in the
                        middle of the night

Rehydrate dry brown domovoi in town monastery with Dr.
                        Cranium's rehyration potion

Talk to Domovoi in inn in middle of night about doll

Take doll from cabinet in inn in the middle of the night
(now you're allowed to take it)

Alternative: I think you can get the doll without seeing
the Domovoi, if you talked to Tanya and she told you
the story how Toby gave her the doll.

Magic Users must drink from faery fountain one night, then
another night try to fetch fake staff south of
Erana's Garden that appears one random night to be
given the Release Ritual by faeries. Fighters,
Thieves, and Paladins do not do this since the
Release Spell is already on Erana's Staff for them.

Solve the crypt puzzles and explore the castle

It must be nighttime (or the big brown monster Toby will
keep slamming Tanya's door on you)

                Give the doll to Tanya

Talk icon on yourself to tell Tanya about "Erana's Staff"

You'll automatically go to town with Tanya and Toby. The
ritual to convert Tanya from vampire to human will
automatically happen, and Erana's Staff will now
be yours instead of being stuck in the large rock.

Magic User only: If you're having a hard time defeating faeries to get Heart
        Ritual:
Save the little vampire girl Tanya to get Erana's staff
Spend a few days getting a health potion each day from Dr. Cranium
Spend a few days getting a mana fruit each day from Erana's Garden
Practice the Reversal, Summon Staff, Resistance, and Frostbite spells
Turn the skill and speed all the way down. Save your game.
At night, go 1 screen south of Erana's Garden to start the fight with
                the faeries.
Cast the Reversal spell. Cast the Summon Staff, then cast the
                Resistance spell.
Now keep casting Frostbite at the Faery Queen. Ignore her 2 helpers.
Keep taking health potions and keep casting Frostbite at Queen.

The screen will blank for a few seconds as the Chernovy are about to fight
you.

Magic User only: If you're having a hard time defeating the Chernovy in the
        swamp guarding the tomb:
Make sure you have plenty of mana fruit gathered one a day from
                Erana's Garden
Glide to screen with tomb and guards.
Stand on a patch of grass near one Chernovy.
Hit that Chernovy with 4 flame darts.
        Cast glide, exit the screen.
Go back and do it again and again. Eat mana fruit to replenish
                your powers.
If you keep getting an Error 52, you can load a saved game from
the QFG Collection CD to get past this point. Read the
beginning of this README file for more details.

When you're at the climax of the game, fighting Ad Avis after Katrina is
killed, Fighters, Thieves, and Paladins have Erana's Staff in inventory.
Tell the Ultimate Joke (that you got from PunnyBones) to Ad Avis to make
him laugh uncontrollably. Fighters and Paladins take the staff out of
inventory, where it will turn into a spear that you can throw at Ad Avis.
Thieves take the staff out of inventory, where it will turn into a stake
and hammer that you can use on Ad Avis. Magic Users must cast the
SUMMON STAFF spell, then tell the Ultimate Joke, then cast a force bolt
at Ad Avis. Once Ad Avis is defeated, click the staff on the giant
crystal to free Erana.

Ghosts:
Anna in forest: Must be reunited with her town husband Nikolai
Nikolai will eventually become a ghost in the forest when you tell
                him about Anna's ghost.
Paladins-only: Piotyr at Staff of Erana at night gives Paladins a
                sword quest
Wraith in rockpile in forest: Destroyed for money or Heart ritual
Ghost on stairs in castle: Just there for effect. Not interactive.

To get a hat for Bonehead skull in Baba Yaga's yard:
See, talk, and ask ghost of Anna in forest at night
Tell Nikolai about ghost of Anna
Get hat from ghost of Nikolai in forest at night when he is reunited
                with Anna
Make sure you have some corn from town wall to give to Baba's hut

To make a pie for Baba Yaga
Buy a pie pan from store
Get 2 bottles from Dr. Cranium
Use bottle to get goo from place where you found bonsai bush
Get bones from skeleton at edge of swamp
Knock off and get branch from Elderbury bush
Grind bones with mortal and pestle in Baba's yard
Use bottle to get bone dust
Put goo, dust, and branch in pan
put pie on skull to have lasers bake it?

3 things you can get from Baba Yaga:
Make and give the elderbury pie, ask for Breath Ritual
Go back to see Baba again, give garlic, ask for good humor bar
Magic Users only: Go back again, give garlic again, ask for Hide spell

The Paladin sword burst into flames when used in QFG3 (I think when your Paladin
skill is 10 or more), and it was supposed to have flames in QFG4. It didn't make
it for the floppy version, but the art was there for the CD version. I am not
really certain whether the CD version of the flaming sword worked or not.

Magic User Spells:

Dimmed spell icon: You're gliding. Stand, and it's not dimmed anymore.
Protection: In Erana's Gerden, sast trigger on lake, cast open on flower,
        cast fetch on scroll
Aura: Save Igor, meet freed gypsy at town gate at night, get invited to
        camp, talk to gypsy fortuneteller
Hide: Give a pie to Baba Yaga, go back and give garlic to Baba, ask for it
Frostbite: See Katrina at town gate one night
Release Ritual: Get from faeries after fetching fake staff in woods at night
Extra spells may in spell inventory that appear when staff is summoned

Rituals: There are 7 rituals. You will get 5 rituals to start the end game.
Katrina will use the 6th ritual to get you back into the cave where
        you'll find the 7th ritual.

5 Rituals you can get:
Blood Ritual: In basement of town monastery. Drink the wine dripping from
        the giant cask.
Bone Ritual: In tomb in swamp, guarded by Chernovy. Defeat them, use Dark
One sign/key on tomb, click on 7 symbols in clockwise order (seen on
        cave arch) to open it.
Sense Ritual: At night, on squid stone near bonsai in goo, use (candy-lured &
bottled) Will o Wisps from edge of swamp. Afterward, you should
click the jar of trapped Will o Wisps on the swamp to release them,
otherwise they will die when sunlight appears.
Breath Ritual: Ask Baba Yaga for it. You'll need to make a pie for her to
        give it to you.
Heart Ritual: Fighters, Paladins, Thieves: Defeat master wraith, search its
        mound.
Heart Ritual: Magic Users: See faeries after getting Erana's staff, defeat
        them

2 Rituals used near the end of the game:
Mouth Ritual: Katrina uses it to open the cave mouth. She will never give
        this ritual to you.
Essence Ritual: Defeat the cave monster and take it, or calm the monster
        to sleep and steal it.

In the Breath Cave near the end of the game, if you keep getting killed
when blowing into the tentacle-like stone flutes, make sure you're using
the small BOTTOM tentacles, not the longer UPPER tentacles.

In the Blood Cave near the end of the game, if you can't find a place to
click the ritual on the altar to start the ritual, make sure you're using
the BLOOD ritual, no the HEART ritual.

The original hintbook for QFG4 describes an inset at the bone altar near the
end of the game. This is incorrect. There is no insert. Just use the altar
instead. Light the second torch, then click the dark one's sign/key above
the altar, then click the bone ritual on the altar.

FIGHTING:
Duck under high-cast spells
Jump over low-cast spells
Spell-casting: The longer you hold down the mouse dutton, the stronger the
        spell
Run away once your stamina runs out (click on the left arrow button)
Left click on the S button to make it go away and make the computer fight
        for you (or press F1)
When the S button is gone, left-click on the fighting screen background or
press spacebar to adjust the style of fighting
Right click to make the S button reappear to let you do the fighting
If you have Throwing skill and have extra daggers, right-click on the bottom
of the screen to throw daggers
If you have Acrobatics skill, right-click above the opponent
To Special Attack in non-S mode (when you do the fighting), press left-button
on yourself to duck, hold down left button, move mouse over monster,
and let go of mouse button

THE WRAPUP

I thought it would be nice to end this file with a long comment from
Corey Cole, taken from Compuserve on July 19, 1996:

The question I posted was: "I'm curious what you really like about each
game, in anticipation of QFG5"

Here is Corey's response:

"Interested in my opinions 'after the fact'? <g>

I think the play balance (both pacing and combat difficulty) (and of
course the freshness of the concept) were strongest in QG1 EGA.
Design flaws -- not much, considering this was our first computer
game. A few of the locations seem a little contrived (most of the
important ones are carefully spaced around the perimenter of the
valley). Lori came up with the curse on the Baron's family and its
repercussions; I still think it's a cool idea.

I much prefer QG1 EGA over the VGA adaption; the animation and
timing are off in the latter, and it has more bugs. The original QG1
is very clean, and Bob Fischbach did a terrific job in programming the
animation so that the timing is "just so." For players getting the
collection, i recommend you play the original QG1 first.

QG2 has the most challenge, best overall puzzle concepts. The combat
has some play balance problems (mostly in being too easy). I really
like what we did with the stories-within-the-stories in this one (the
elementals, the escaping harem girl, etc.) -- these are very true to
the Arabian Nights that we used as a model. Major design flaw -- the
street labyrinth at the beginning is really tedious, since you can't
buy a map or compass until you've successfully navigated a good
portion of it. (Originally we intended to have encounters and events
in the streets, but found out that the systems of the day didn't have
enough memory to let use add that to the 3-D environment there.)

QG3 has the strongest story line. Lori did most of the writing on
this one, as I was off on another project during much of the
development. When I playtested QG3, I was awed and amazed by the
characters and story. It's the easiest and most linear of the series,
but also the most beautiful, and has really interesting characters.
Design flaw -- only that the game is a little easy for advanced
adventurers; this was our first real point-and-click design
experience.

QG4 has an interesting story and fairly challenging puzzles, but
shipped before it was fully ready -- some players have a hard time
getting to the game through the bugs. I like it for the general story
line, many of the puzzles, and the mix of horror and humor. I also
think the QG4 combat is the best of the series -- it was mostly Henry
Yu's inspiration (one of the programmers); he and I had been
discussing uses for fuzzy logic and he came up with the idea of using
it to drive combat AI. I think the voices on the CD version are
*wonderful* (John Rhys-Davies called it "the CD-ROM from Hell" after
his part took 3 weeks to record!) And the Tanya/Toby sequences
brought me to tears no matter how many times I replayed them. (I'm a
sentimentalist). Major design flaw -- not enough direction given to
the player (this was a slight overreaction of early comments about QG3
suggestiong that we 'held the player's hands' too much. Of course,
*later* reviews and player comments said they preferred it that way!
This is a tough business.)

My personal favorites? Probably QG3 followed closely by QG2, then 1,
with 4 just behind it. On another week, I might pick 2 or 1 or even 4
first; it all depends on what I'm looking for. My recommendation:
Play the games in order, as we always intended them to be played. We
are very grateful to Sierra for putting out the QG anthology so that
players can experience the whole storyline. (Threads continue through
all of the games, coming to their final resolutions in Quest for Glory
5.)"

        -- Corey Cole
