The 4th Panzer Division advanced east through Belgium after taking the surrender at the fort Eban Emal, which had already been subdued by German paratroopers in a daring glider raid. Frantic Allied leaders rushed troops and tanks to the area around the Dyle Line. The main thrust of the German armies, however, would come through the Ardennes Forest.*

The 4th Panzer ran into trouble on the third day of the invasion of France when elements of the 3rd French Light Armored Division were in their path. In addition to somewhat superior tanks, the French had massed huge amounts of artillery. Troops of the 4th fought hard, but failed to make a penetration. By day's end, over 100 tanks from each side would be taken out of action.*
