May of 1942 saw some of the fiercest armored battles of the Gazala campaign in North Africa. After bringing Rommel to a halt on May 29, Lt. General Ritchie failed to counterattack, thereby allowing the German forces time to reorganize. Rommel was alerted to a British attack by a wireless interception on June 11, and he ordered his 15th and 21st Panzer divisions to meet the attack. Both forces advanced in a thick haze of sand and smashed into each other for what proved the decisive battle of the Gazala campaign. Victory that day was measured not by ground taken, but by the number of enemy tanks left burning in the desert.*
