 1.0 Ĵ VERTRIX'S LEGEND BY D.T

You've surely already heard about VERTRIX's legend, this "way to another
state of mind", which as a black hole take those who are caught inside to
a place from lots came back but don't remember of.
The Legend says that the entity ruling the other side of the VERTRIX,
master of time and soul, sometimes take folks into its world, after
choosing them to be contestants at the VERTRIX tournament, whose winner
   can fulfill three wishes.
Here's the list of players for this season.

This very confidencial officer is given more and more dangerous and
secret missions (One of the last was an investigation on the peanut's
butter's popularity in the londonian people. The last one -still not
achieved- is to test in real the comfort of the new space suits designed
by the N.A.Z.) With a out of common luck, this powerslave always manages
to make his way through problems.

DOCK JONES: [Space: Earth, U.S.A, Jungle / Time: 1997 AD]
Ĵ

This explorer is the twin brother of Max Jones.
He is the black sheep of the family since his childhood, where his
father always had a preference for Max, more agree to assume the
missions of "take out the garbages" and "do the washing up".
Dock is as lucky as his brother, but it leads him in weird things :
he has been bitten by a lezard during a journey he has won in a TV-show,
and his helicopter crashed when he was sent back to the U.S.A, to be
healed. Only one to be hurted in the accident, he thinks now that the
Spirit of Lezards tries to keep him in the jungle, to use his luck,
against which he can't go. Some say that it would be an excuse to search
  for the "Inky's Treasure".

STANISLAS DURHAP: [Space: Orion, New U.K, Acacia avenue / time: 2358 AV]

This mercenary is ready to do anything to buy himself tons of discs and
rare recordings. Bred by his parents with lots of hormoans, his
strenght his not to be tested. Though, it won't be of any help for the
contest, but to intimidate the other players. Be sure that if he is
strong, doesn't mean that he is brainless : he often prove his good sense
  of strategy.
When he was "borrowed" by Herman, Stan was going to some appointment with
some "Ed'", to search for some "Charlotte".

Simple assistant in a small cinema, he dreams of going in the other side
of the screen... which he has already made several times : Tod is quite
clumsy (that's why he is a simple assistant).
Son of the boss, he can't be fired. At last news, Tod (very interested in
his work) was studiying the idea of changing the cinema into a
  fast-food-cinema.

Tired of fights and snow, Vick settled in a sunny place and opened a
small shop of surfboards renting (he was clever, as he invented surf in
  the mean time).
Unfortunately, the business doesn't go well, so he is thinking about
  leaving the place.

Great specimen of the missing link, this genius, inventor of the wheel,
of the lighter and of the flower pot, dreams of proving his theory of
the "big-bang" (he hesitates between "more you hit strong, more strong
is the noise", and "the universe is the consequence of multiweirds
stuffs which made that it occured").
Glouk'd like to have a Jazz certificate, the only one missing, which
could let him teach music to the youth.

Princess of her castle, and mother of seven childs, Clara says that she
doesn't understand what she is doing there, but that she'll make at her

Few informations are available, as she never goes out of her tower.
We know that she is interested in music, which isn't appreciated by the
king. She would be trying to make an electric cither.

This sorcerer, talented for his adepts, and mad for the rest of the
people of Galileo, is kind of astronomy, and thinks he can read in
  the future.
The prophecy about which he is the more proud is to have predicted
rain in decembus. Though, he is denigrated by the state power
(The Great Wisemen Confraternity), which sees in his prophecies a mean
of starting a revolution. (He would have predicted that in the future,
power would be given to the people and not to the dictatorship of the
  ancient ones).

Fortune teller in a circus, Valerie didn't get a happy life, which can
be seen through her bad mood. Business isn't going well for her :
apparently unable to predict positives events, the customers never come
back. People who know her well (Beatle, her black cat, and her old
uncle) say that deep inside Valerie sleeps a golden heart. The Goleaux

Bred with TV and video games since his childhood, this little scamp is a

Master of Time and Spirit, Hermann is the Tournament's organizer. He
would have the power to travel in Time and Space, and a killer's sense

 2.1 LAUNCHING THE GAME

This game has been conceived to be ran under DOS environment; It would,
in theory, run under Windows 95. For an optimum use, you should restart in
MSDOS mode.

  Launch 'VERTRIX.EXE'.

   Many cases :

   - You are launching the game from a CD-ROM...
The game is going to work, but the config won't be saved.

   - You are launching the game from your Hard Disk.
The setup.cfg config will be saved on it.

  Command-line options.

you can use the following options when lauching Vertrix :

   VERTRIX -setup (same as 'SETUP.BAT')
This option allows you to change your config.

   VERTRIX -smp_off
In case of too few memory left to run the game with the music
(There's 1.4 Mo of samples), this option tells Vertrix to load
samples only at the moment they are needed.
The music loadings are slower, but the game uses less RAM memory.

VERTRIX -auto (For a CD-ROM launching)
This option operates an autodetection of your soundcard.

Ŀ

Beware !: If you are the owner of a network card, the game can crash.
Moreover, this option is not 100% sure to configurate
properly your SoundCard. That's why you can use the
           MANUAL CONFIGURATION from SETUP.

There's an help in the game too.

 5.1 THE AIM

The game consists in several matches (Human VS. CPU,
Human VS. Human), the aim is to defeat all the opponents.

Quite simple : every player has to make ALIGNMENTS of same blocks by
permuting the blocks which are going down three by three.
Some alignments are simples : a line of three same blocks,...
   others are a little bit more complicated : a +, a *, ...
   Those are FIGURES.

Each player has his own bonusses.

Every 3 alignments, the player has the possibility to choose a bonus among
   his bonusses.

Every 12 alignments, the player increases his LEVEL ; if
he hasn't all of his bonusses yet, a new bonus column is given.

There's several ways to win at VERTRIX :

  a) Your opponent's board is filled so as his bar can't go down any more.

  b) You have reached the Tenth LEVEL before your opponent.

 5.2 ALL KINDS OF BLOCKS

 There's 3 types :

The 'NORMAL BLOCKS' which allow to MAKE ALIGNMENTS.

The 'GRAY BLOCKS' which are INDESTRUCTIBLES.

The 'EXPLOSIVE BLOCKS' which act like a bomb and explode all types
   of blocks.

 5.3 ALIGNMENTS

An alignment is made when at least 3 same blocks are placed in line,
column or diagonal. But that's not enough ; as the blocks are
quite instables, they need a shock in the board to start the reaction.

An explosion (any number of blocks).
(except special figures) always counts as 1 alignment.
   Though, the first explosion can make a in-chain reaction ;
Every step counts as an alignment until the blocks are get back stables.

Some complexes alignments (FIGURES) counts more than a single alignment
   (See game's help).

 5.4 LEVEL INCREASING

The player increases his level every 12 alignments. When he reaches
the tenth level, he wins. Though, the fact to pass a level
   increases the player's speed.

If the player hasn't got all of his bonusses yet, a new bonus
   column is given.

 5.5 CHOOSING A BONUS
You have the possibility to pick up a bonus among yours every
3 alignments (When the 3 lights at the bottom of the screen are
   switched on).

For example : If you are Player1 (on the Left of the screen).

You just made your third alignment ; your 3 lights are switched on
and an alarm rings, which warns you that you have got the possibility
   to choose a bonus.
A block is going to appear in the window on the left of your board; if
you let it get down, that means that you LOOSE YOUR BONUS but that you
gain an alignment (good choice if you want to pass to the higher level
   as fast as possible ...).
If you move the block on the left, a bar containing 3 types of bonusses
is going to appear in the bonusses' choice's column. A color goes with a
   bonus line.
For example, if you wishes to use an orange bonus, you have to permute
the blocks so as , the BOTTOM ONE is the orange one. A bonus
will be picked up at random among your orange line bonusses.

(CED : After our BetaTesters, you should play one or two times to
         understand !...)
