$  In September 1939 infantry comprised the most numerous part of Wehrmacht.  Although development of$
$armoured forces decreased its role, it still remained the key to success during fights in towns, river$
$crossings and storming fortifications.  Soldier's basic armament was Mauser 98k rifle, the same one, that$
$comprised the armament of Polish soldiers. Automatic pistol PM38 Schmeisser at that time was used by$
$leaders of rifle teams. German infantry battalion consisted of three rifle companies and a heavy machine$
$gun company.$
$Battalion's heavier support weapons were 50 mm mortars and  MG34 machine guns, used either as light or$
$heavy machine guns. German regiments were additionally equipped with a company of Pak36 cal. 37 mm heavy$
$anti-tank guns and a company of 75 and 150 mm infantry guns.  German units were better equipped with heavy$
$weapons than its Polish counterparts.  The basic means of transport used in German divisions were horse$
$drawn wagons. German infantry, well equipped and trained was a dangerous enemy for Polish troops.$
