$   In later thirties, Wehrmacht forces were radically modernised. In order to create engineering forces$
$able to play active part in modern warfare, these units were properly supplied with mechanised equipment$
$and modern means of transport. Engineers played an important role when acting on the defensive, building$
$strongholds, minefields and anti-tank barriers. Their role during advance also couldn't be overestimated:$
$engineers duties included clearing of minefields, removing obstacles, and bridge building.$
$   During river crossings pontoon bridges and small foot-bridges were deployed.            $
$   Engineering units contained also specialised shock troops equipped with flame throwers, explosives etc.$
$These troops were employed wherever appeared the necessity of storming heavily fortified positions.$
