$ Development of mobile armoured and motorised troops required fast reconnaissance units. Apart from$
$armoured cars, motorcycles were adopted for this role. Motorcycle battalions units were a part of a few$
$armoured and infantry divisions. Motorcycle combinations were usually equipped with a single MG 34$
$machine gun. The main advantage of these units was their impressive speed. Heavy support was provided by$
$additional platoons equipped with mortars and anti-tank weapons.$
$ After campaign in Poland, because of very high losses, the idea of large motorcycle units was abandoned.$
$Motorcycle units became a part on mixed reconnaissance units, containing also armoured cars and infantry$
$transported on trucks. Motorcycle patrols were applied until the end of war to carry orders between HQ's$
$and their units.$
