$ Messerschmitt Bf109 was the basic type of fighter used by Luftwaffe during September 1939 campaign. The$
$construction was designed in mid thirties. Many original solutions have been introduced to the project.$
$ The plane was tested over Spanish soil in late thirties, where German Legion Condor fought on gen. Franco's $
$side against the Republicans. After these 'tests' Germans improved the construction.$
$ In September 1939 Bf109e, equipped with Daimler Benz DB 601 engine (865HP) was one of the fastest planes$
$of the period, able to fly at speed of 560km/h at altitude of 4000 m. The armament included two 20 mm MG FF$
$guns and two 7,92 mm MG17 machine guns.$
$ In spite of their speed and firepower, these fighters suffered heavy losses during the campaign. Polish$
$defence managed to destroy 56 of them and heavily damage further 60.$
$ Me 109's construction has been improved till the very end of the war. $
$ Another type of fighter used by Luftwaffe in September 1939 was Messerschmitt Bf110, designed as a heavy$
$escort fighter. The plane was propelled by two Junkers Jumo 210Ga engines, allowing speed of 455km/h.$
$ Me 110 offensive armament consisted of two 20 mm MG FF guns and four 7,92 mm MG17 machine guns.$
$The rear hemisphere was protected by a single MG 17 operating by a radio operator.$
$ Quantitative and qualitative advantage of Luftwaffe led to the neutralisation of Polish Air Force and$
$unchallenged German domination in the sky.$
