$ PLZ 11c aircraft constructed in 1933 was the basic type of fighter during the Defence War in 1939. During $
$the first two years of service it was considered the most modern fighter in the world. However the $
$development of technology, in particular in the area of aircraft engines quickly ended its favourable status.$
$ In 1939 PZL 11c was already an obsolete construction which was not only slower than German fighters,$
$but also slower than many of German bombers. Despite that it was more manageable that the German Bf109. For $
$this reason manoeuvre operations were usually unsuccessful on the part of German fighters. In such cases in $
$order to avoid being shot, German fighters had to flee. In September of 1939 the limited fighter squadrons $
$were divided into two groups. First of them formed the so-called Pursue Brigade quartered near Warsaw. $
$Single divisions of the second group were alotted to select first attack armies. On the 1st of September $
$all fighter squadrons were at hidden airfields. The attempt to destroy Polish air forces on the ground failed.$
$Unfortunately during the war operations the composition of particular squadrons diminished quickly due to$
$the necessity of frequent changes of airfields and due to the lack of spare parts. During the second stage$
$of combat operations the whole fighter aviation was first transferred to East and then to neutral countries.$
$For this reason many Polish pilots started their service with French air forces in 1940. The main task$
$of the Pursuit-plane Brigade was the intervention against enemy's bomber raids in the area of Warsaw.$
$Army fighter wings had to cover marches of their own troops and if possible neutralise enemy's bombing$
$raids within the territory of army's operation. Based on alliance agreements with France and Great$
$Britain, Poland purchased a fleet of quite modern Western aircraft MS-406 made in France and Hawker$
$Hurricanes made in Great Britain. The aircrafts which were transported through the Mediterranean Sea, did $
$not reach Poland before the termination of war operations. Polish pilots were introduced to new types of $
$aircrafts only in 1940 while defending the skies of France, and after its fall - while participating in the$
$Battle of Britain. $
