SCRAMBLE is Copyright 1998 Humpty's Restaurants International Inc.
Unauthorized duplication is strictly prohibited.

This game was intended to be run directly from the floppy disk that you
have purchased. You may, however, choose to install the disk contents
to any directory of your choice on your hard drive. This will improve
initial loading performance, and will protect your copy of the program (floppy disks are known to fail after extended use). If you want to
copy the disk to your hard drive and are not sure how to do so, then please consult your operating system documentation.

Troubleshooting information is covered near the end of this document.

Skill Levels
------------

Hammlet skill level is intended for children under the age of seven. At
this skill level, each level begins with at least six lives (more if the
previous level ended with more than six lives). If all lives are lost
on a level, the game can be restarted from a saved game or from the
beginning.

Humpty skill level is intended for anyone over seven years of age.
Lives are carried over from the previous level. If all lives are lost,
the game can be restarted, either from a saved game or from the
beginning. Upon completion of the entire game, the player is awarded
10,000 points for each remaining life.

Scoring
-------

Humpty gains points by picking up coins and squishing spiders.
If Humpty gathers all the coins on a level, a 50000 point bonus is
awarded at the end of the level. There are many hidden areas containing
coins, so look around carefully if you miss any!

There are many bonus lives throughout the game. 10,000 points are
awarded for picking up a bonus life if the maximum of nine bonus lives
has already been reached.

High Scores
-----------

Scramble will store the 10 highest scores on your disk. Should you have
difficulty entering your name in the high scores list, it may be because
Scramble is editing out what it considers to be a profanity (this is,
after all, primarily a children's game).

If you should ever wish to reset the high score list to its initial
values, simply delete the file "HIGHSCOR.DAT".

Troubleshooting

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

CPU: 486DX (66 MHz or faster is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED),
	Pentium recommended
MEMORY: 8 MB of RAM (at least 6.9 MB free)
VIDEO CARD: VGA (320x200 256 color mode)

OPTIONAL:
SOUND CARD: 100% Sound Blaster compatible (recommended)

If your computer does not meet these specifications, game performance
will be compromised. If minimum requirements are not met, the game may
not work at all.

General problems:

1. There is a message indicating an error with the disk
-Use DOS or Windows to copy all the files from the floppy disk
to your hard drive, and attempt to run the game from the
hard drive. If the files cannot be copied, the disk may be
damaged. Return the disk for an exchange.

2. The game does not load
-It can take more than a minute to run the game from the floppy
disk. Copy the program to your hard drive for faster loading
         times.
-If the game still does not load, there may be a problem
detecting your sound card (see below).
-If there are still problems, attempt the following:

To force the game to run without sound, go to a DOS command
prompt and run the game as follows:

                A:\>humpty nosound

This will disable all attempts to find a sound card in your
machine in the unlikely event that the detection process is
         causing problems.

It is also possible to bypass the joystick detection with:

                A:\>humpty nojoy

3. There is a memory error
-The game requires at least 8 Meg of RAM. If you are using an 8
Meg system under DOS, it is possible that other programs are
using memory that the game requires. Ensure that no disk
caching programs are being used (such as SMARTDRV). Consult
your operating system documentation on freeing memory.
-Under Windows 95, ensure that your DOS prompt has at least
7168K of DPMI memory available to it under its Properties
setting. Also, ensure that you have virtual memory enabled in
         your system settings.
-As a last resort, you may wish to disable the music and sound
effects as explained above. The game will use slightly less
memory, but you will miss all of the music and sound.

4. This is a problem using your joystick with Scramble
-Make sure that your joystick is properly plugged in.
-If your joystick control is not right, then please carefully
follow the instructions provided during the Joystick
         Calibration.
-Scramble will only run with analogue joysticks. If you think
your joystick is digital, then please consult your joystick
manual about simulating an analogue joystick.
-If your joystick problems can't be resolved, you can choose not
to play with a joystick by either skipping the Joystick
Calibration, or by specifying the "nojoy" command line
parameter (see item #2 for instructions).

5. There is an error message telling you that you require a math
    coprocessor to run the game:
-A standard 486 (DX) and all PENTIUM processors come with a math
coprocessor. Your computer may be older than this standard.
You should consider upgrading your processor.

Sound problems:

This game requires a Sound Blaster V2 (or later) compatible sound card.
If you have a very old Sound Blaster, then you may want to consider
upgrading. Only 100% Sound Blaster compatible sound cards are supported.

1. There is a lot of static in the music and sound effects
-Try lowering your volume mixer settings. There are tools in
Windows for doing this. If you are running under DOS, there
should be utilities that came with your sound card which can
perform this operation. Try consulting your operating system and
	 sound card documentation.

2. The game runs, but there is no sound
-Ensure your speakers are turned on and connected to your sound
         card.
-Ensure that the volume is turned up on both the sound card and
the speakers, including mixer settings under Windows (Consult
         your Windows manual).
-If you are running the game in Windows, then ensure that there
is only one application currently attempting to use the sound
card. Often, the problem is that there are two copies of
Scramble running at the same time.
-There are problems running DOS games in some operating systems
(Windows NT, for example). If you think this might be a
problem, then try to exit your operating system to DOS (this
may, or may not, be possible depending on how your operating
system was installed). Follow the DOS operating instructions
         found on the software package.
-Ensure your sound card is configured properly (see your sound
         card documentation for more information).
-If none of these suggestions work, then try humming to
yourself, while making silly sound effects.

3. The game cannot detect the sound card
-If you are running the game in Windows, then ensure that there
is only one application currently attempting to use the sound
card. Often, the problem is that there are two copies of
Scramble running at the same time.
-Ensure that the BLASTER environment variable is set to match
your sound card's settings (see your sound card documentation
         for more information).
-Although the game will attempt to determine your sound card
settings in other ways, setting the BLASTER environment
variable is the safest way to obtain this information.
-Some sound cards need to run software to enable Sound Blaster
compatibility. Consult the documentation that came with your
         sound card.
-If none of these suggestions work, then try humming to
yourself, while making silly sound effects.
