This file should be read before you play Snuff for the first time. It
doesn't have to be, but it helps. The first few times that you play this
game you should play on version 2.2 SNUFFV22.BAS. This has to be run on
Qbasic, not QB45. I don't know why it doesn't work on that, but if you try
to run it on QB45 your computer will freeze I've tried it on 5 different
computers, and it froze the computer every time.

Playing version 2.2 will help you learn the game concept, and some
basic strategies. It's not nearly as flashy as version 3.1, but it's still
fun.

You have to run version 3.1 through QB45, with the command line QB /l Qb.qlb
If you don't have QB45 I probably will have included an EXE file of the game
which you can run. This version doesn't really have any requirements, but
it really sucks if your computer isn't a pentium speed. If it is, and the
game still runs slowly you should turn the item frequency in the options to
never. If it's still slow then pick guys that can only drop one snuff. If
it's still slow you'll have to play version 2.2. I think I might have found
a way to speed it up more. I'll put this in the options if it works.

If you need help hit F1 during the game in version 2.2
or read helpv31.txt for version 3.1 help

                            THE MAKING OF SNUFF

This next part isn't too important, and doesn't have to be read unless you
want to read it.

I created the idea of the game snuff while I was in my computer science
class. I made one happy face that could move around the screen. I decided
to make another one that could be controled with the W key for up, S for
down, A for left, and D for right. After this was done I made a game of it
one guy would chase the other guy. Since you couldn't tell if you tagged
the other guy we would always cheat and so that the other guy didn't tag you.
So I put in the thing where the guy is filled in if he is "IT", and not filled
in when he is being chased. That is the basic story of snuff

VERSION 1.1
This version I left on the computer in my class room, and now that class is
over. I just wrote the final for it yesterday. I never got around to copying
it on to a disk, and now all my stuff off the computer is gone. So Snuff V1.1
is lost forever, but it wasn't very good.

During the making of V1.1 the game was actually called Eat My Babies, we
had an idea of people dropping babies, and said that you ate them when you
went over them. It is a concept that is still in the game, but they aren't
babies anymore, and you try to avoid them, instead of eating them.

In this version points weren't kept track of, becaue the only way to get
a point was to tag the other person, and then he would tag you back. The
score would always be the same.

VERSION 2.1
This was made the same day as Snuff V1.1. I was bored so I decided to make
the game that I made at school, at home. In this version I used better
programming. This version only took half an hour to make. It had few
differences from V1.1, but they improved the game a lot.

The biggest difference is the snuffs that you can drop. They were still
called babies back then, but now if you touch one the other player gets a
point. You can only drop babies when you are the person being chased.

The score is kept in this game. This was an easy feature to put in, and
it gave the game a point.

VERSION 2.2
In this version I just added a few features to V2.1. There isn't any
really major differences.

I made the game display the winner when somebody reaches 21 points. I
made a timer so you can't tag somebody back as soon as they tag you. You
also have to wait before you can re-drop your snuff. When the timer reaches
a high enough number you switch who's chasing, and who's being chased.

I added the help thing so if you don't know how to play, then you can hit
F1, and the help screen comes up. I might do one of these for V3.1, but I
don't really want to, because it would be more work than I feel like doing,
and I want to get it finished as soon as posible.

VERSION 3.1
This is where the game changed a lot from what it was intended to be.
Some people thought it would be fun to have characters to select, power-ups,
special moves, and other things. This game took one night to do on paper.
We designed all the guys, and drew them on paper. We gave the special moves,
and snuffs.

The next day the guys were drawn on our computer drawing program we have.
I started programming the game later that day, and by the end of the day, you
could do everything that you can do in SnuffV2.2, but it had graphics, also
I hadn't made a help function.

During the first of the 2 weeks it took to make SnuffV3.1 the first new
feature was the selection of life bars, or points. This didn't take
long, and was easy. I had to think kind of hard on how to do the life
bars, but when I figured it out it was easier than I thought. This was
then put into the options list.

Another thing I put in was the items. This was also easier than I thought
it might have been. The bomb which makes you lose life, or the other
person get a point, was the first one. The next was the speed-up, it was kind
of hard to do, and it made other things not work. I fixed these problems by
making it so you can't get items while somebody has a speed up on. Then I
did the switcher, which changes the positions of the guys, this one was
very simple. Then I did the last one which I thought would be the hardest,
the changer, that makes you turn into somebody else. It wasn't as hard as
I thought it would have been, and the speed up was probably harder than it.
The items all together took less than a day to program into the game.

On the second week I didn't get to work on this game very much, because I
had finals in school, and I had to study so I wouldn't fail English. Still I
did find enough time to finish the game. I didn't really have too much more
to do, just the special moves. I also made some of the stuff in the game
look a little different, and better. The special moves weren't very hard.
The pickle, and the drinking bird caused a few errors, but I think I've
fixed them.

That is pretty much all that happened during the making of Snuff. I'll
probably make a couple more things for the game before I release it on the
internet. If I don't I might make a version 3.2 with the few ideas I have
put into the game. If lots of people find this game, and anybody likes it,
I might make an extra character pack with more characters, and different
special moves. I also might put in some WAV files so the guys swear at each
other when they get tagged. I don't have any other ideas really, but if
somebody has actually read this far, and they have an idea, or several ideas
for the game, then send an E-mail to phatk98@hotmail.com, or visit our web
page at www.members.tripod.com/~phatkd/ Also write me if you find any errors.
I don't really want to fix them, but I guess that I should.

I hope that everybody enjoys Snuff(the game), and that people will E-mail
suggestions to me. I made the option to speed up the game, then I found a
better way to make the game fast so I took the option out, and it should run
fast no matter what now.

---WARNING NONE OF THESE GAMES WILL EVER BE FINISHED---
If you like RPG games I think that Blair's game HOLY CONQUEST, will be
finished pretty soon, so please download it from our internet page. I
worked on this game a lot too, and I think it's really good. It is
a classic RPG game right down to the cheesy dialogue. It also has some new
concepts to it that make it different from other RPGs. We've worked on
it for more than half a year, so it damn well better be good.

Also Phat Kids has an RPG called FOREVER that won't be out for a
long time, but it is the best Qbasic game I've ever seen. It has a 3D
game engine. I haven't had anything to do with this game so I don't know
much about it. It's being made by Gary Ng, and he's a much better
programmer than I am.

I hope we will have more people in Phat Kids soon, and we will be
able to make more games. If you have a suggestion for a game that you want
made I'll consider making it, because I'm not making anything right now, and
I like to make games when I've got nothing to do.
