        The rise and fall of Zalingra
        -----------------------------

About 1000 years ago was the secrets of magic well known in the world of 
Zalingra.To secure peace and happiness for all times to come was the 
Mastercrown created.The mightiest magic weapon ever, the crown over
all other crowns.The ultimate power.
People was happy, no need to worry about anything anymore.
This was the start of the declining years.
Now 1000 years later is almost all knowledge of magic since a long time
forgotten.The only remaining is some relics and the Mastercrown.
The mastercrown was handled by the mastercrown guardians and they have 
tried to preserve the wisdom from the glorious days but all true 
understanding is gone.
Recently the big catastrophe happen that the long ago forgotten timelock
closed the gate to the mastercrown castle!
To open the gate is 6 crystals needed which is in 6 castles.
The castles has been deserted by the people of Zangrila and the secrets 
of them is forgotten.
The guardians has tried to collect the crystals but no one has returned.
The last hope is the young warrior Zanzi.
Can he collect all six crystals needed to open the gate to the 
Mastercrown castle?



        Some facts about Zalingra
        -------------------------

Now 1000 years after the creation of the Mastercrown stays almost all
friendly people in their villages.If you want to talk with a person in a
village so go and face him and press Alt.
It's dangerous outside the villages with lot of wild animals and giant
insects.The brave can hunt and this is that the monsters can leave :

gold coin               money you can buy medicine and other things for
money bag               in the money bag is 3 gold coins
golden money bag        this holds 10 gold coins
cherry                  restores some life power
cheese                  restores even more life power
meat                    restores all life power
melon                   restore some magic power
carrot                  restores more magic power than the apple
apple                   restores all magic power
arrow                   use the bow to shot enemies
bomb                    select and use to fire (see section about inventory)
clock                   paralyse all the monsters on the screen for 5 seconds

Some doors in the castles is opened with iron and gold keys.The iron keys
is held by the little blue fat man and the gold keys is protected by the
big boss monsters.
Other doors in the castles is opened by pushing a special block in one
direction.The special blocks looks like any other block but can be pushed
once in ONE direction.The special blocks is always alone with no close
neighbouring block.
The monsters controls some doors and those doors is only opened after all
the monsters in the room is defeated.
The castles is very old and some rooms has been closed by new walls those
walls is weaker with cracks in it and can be blowned away with bombs.
Be careful with bombs they can hurt you to!
Other items Zanzi can come across is treasure chests and hearts.
Treasure chests is automatic opened when Zanzi is near and then disappears.
If Zanzi takes a heart is his max. life power storage increased and he is
also healed.



        The title screen
        ----------------

The title screen is the first screen with the options start and quit.
Move the rectangle to start or quit and press alt.
More information about the game is displayed if you don't select
anything in about 10 seconds.Pressing any key stops showing the additional
information.
Pressing I will immediately display the information.


        The map
        -------

Every time Zanzi visits a new place is the location stored in the map. 
The black areas at the map is places where Zanzi hasn't been.
It's different maps for the outside world and the castles.
Press M to show the map and control, Alt or esc to return.


        The Inventory
        -------------

Press I to see the items Zanzi has with him.The items in the square
named "Selectable" can be choosen.Move the outlined rectangle to an item
and press Alt to select it.The selected item is showed at the lower left
corner during game play and if the player press control so is the item
used.
In the inventory is also the crystals Zanzi has found and the items
he is equipped with displayed.
Zanzi can also come across items he don't  know how to use and those 
items is displayed in the area marked "Other", perhaps someone other in
the game can find any use for them? 
Control and Esc removes the inventory without doing any changes.



        Status shown on the screen during gameplay
        ------------------------------------------

In the lower part of the screen is some status information displayed :
the number of bombs and arrows, how much money Zanzi has and the
selected item.
The "Life" and "Magic" meters at the bottom of the screen displays the
life power in red and magic power in white.The outlined rectangles
shows the maximum ability.



        If Zanzi is defeated
        --------------------

If Zanzis life power is gone does he wake up at the beginning of the
castle or in the last visited village if he wasn't in a castle.
Zanzi has also recovered some life and magic power when he wakes up.
Since Zanzi wakes up at the same place as he would have been if the game
was saved and loaded just before the last fight is it no need to save
the game before you really want to quit.
The monsters Zanzi killed before he was defeated has returned but all
doors that was opened is still open.
All Zanzis items and weapons is still in his possession but if he had any
money has the unknown helpers taken half of it.


        The sound/save/load/quit menu
        -----------------------------

If you press Esc during gameplay is a menu showed with four options :

Sound   -- lets you adjust the volume for sound effects and music in the game.
	   You can also adjust the volume with the windows volume control.
	   If you are using the DIGMID driver so is the volume of the music
	   also affected by the volume control for the samples.

Save    -- saves the game in progress 

Load    -- Loads the game and restores  it from the place Zanzi would
           have been if he was defeated all the monsters has also returned.

Quit    -- quits to the title screen



        Controls
        --------        

You can use the keyboard or a joystick.
The keyboard :

        up      --      go up
        left    --      go left
        right   --      go right
        down    --      go down
        
        The numeric keyboard can also be used (2,4,6 and 8).

        I       --      brings up the inventory,
			shows information in the title screen

        M       --      show the map

        Esc     --      during gameplay brings this up a menu with
                        sound, load, save, quit options
                        can also be used to escape from menus

        Ctrl    --      use selected item, escapes from menus,
                        speeds up the text in dialogues.        
        Alt     --      attacks with the sword (if you have it!),
                        select the chosen menu option,
                        go further in longer dialogues.
                        If you go near someone in a village and
                        press alt are you able to talk to them.
        
        S       --      save the current screen to the file "SNAP.BMP".
                        This option is only available during gameplay
                        and not when you examines the map or the
                        inventory.
			You can't take snapshots when you are talking.

If you want to use a joystick must you calibrate it with the setup
program see the file setup.txt for details.
After you have done this is the joystick buttons mapped as :

        button 1        --      same function as Alt

        button 2        --      same as Ctrl

        button 3        --      same as M (map)

        button 4        --      same function as I (inventory)

        button 5        --      same as Esc

Not all joystick has 5 buttons but you can combine the joystick with
the keyboard keys.
Once the joystick has been initiated correctly is it automatic detected.
If you want to disable the joystick must you edit the "zanzi.cfg" and
delete the joystick section or delete the whole file "zanzi.cfg".
If you delete the file "zanzi.cfg" is the configuration you have done
with the setup program lost.



        The background music
        --------------------

You can change the background music by replacing the midifiles.
When in the game a midifile plays is depending of the name of the file.
For example in castle one is "cas1.mid" played first and then
"cas11.mid" up to eventually "cas19.mid".After the last filed is played
starts things over with the first file.

So if you for example has a midifile "rock.midi" and want this to be the
one played first when Zanzi is in the central village do the following :

        1.This step is only necessary if you haven't the midifiles in the
	  midi subdirectory.
	  Rename, move or delete the old "villc.mid"
        
        2.Copy or move "rock.midi" to the "zanzi" directory

        3.Rename "rock.midi" to "villc.mid"



        Strategy and hints
        ------------------

The following is some hopefully good advises about how to help Zanzi
complete his quest:

        * be curious and explore everything

        * use the map to see unvisited locations

        * talk to everybody you can talk to

        * don't use the medicine until it is necessary, remember Zanzi always
          wakes up if he is defeated

        * you don't have to kill every monster sometimes is it better to
          run than to fight

        * practise makes you better

        * take everything you can

        * buy the things you want as soon as you can
          (remember then Zanzi is defeated is his money decreased but
           the items he have is unaffected ) 

        * save some of the magic power and arrows for the boss monsters

To really enjoy playing this adventure :

        * don't play too long without any breaks

        * you don't have to save after every monster Zanzi has defeated

        * don't load every time some monster has hitted Zanzi

        * relax and have fun!
