1 - Summary
----------------

Duke Nukem Doom was conceived many many long times ago. It was a cool
little idea I had when I figured out that I could use editart to extract
things from Duke Nukem. Add to that my recently found skills with using all
those fun little Doom editing programs, and I started off on a journey. Where
I ended up is right here, typing this to you, faithful player. Don't get me
wrong, though, I'm not some obsessed fan who lives at my computer working on
Doom levels all day long. I'm actually quite different than that. Sure, I've
spent lots of time here working at this, but it's not my life. And that's
basically why it's taken me so friggin' long to get it done. Also, along with
my efforts to have a real life taking priority over my work on Duke Nukem
Doom, I also had to contend with a raging inner perfectionist. I had to get
everything right. If I got everything but one little thing working perfectly,
I would keep going until I could get that one last thing finished. By then I
come up with new ideas and throw them into the thing, and then those things
all need to be edited and fixed and worked on and tweaked. The BFG has gone
from pipe bombs, almost to a shrinker, then to a devastator for some time,
which then switched ammo around from rockets to mini rockets, then finally I
got sick of it's total boringness and brought back the pipe bombs, but now
with a special added BFG range type damage thing. At one point the chainsaw
was the pipe bombs instead, and the chaingun was a super fast almighty weapon.
Then I finally found a balance for everything and that's what's left in the
game now. I also came up with some cool ideas, like flying ammo, different
gun frames as you select and put away your weapons, the pipe bombs
themselves, and the chaingun that does more damage if you are touching the
target you're shooting. There's more exciting things like that, so
explore and try to find them. Anyway, in this game, you'll find everything
that should be changed has been changed. The guns are new, and they
aren't just new textures. Their whole behavior has either been
changed or edited around to be 'different' but good. Most of the enemies
are changed, with many new enemies. I couldn't just simply edit their sounds
and frames, so I made their activities different. Imp's fireballs are totally
different, plus seeing them from the sides is cool. The end guys are all new,
with the cyberdemon pretty cool. The former spiderdemon is interesting, so
find him and check him out. My own level, on map 31, is almost exactly like
Duke Nukem Doom in how it's been modified over and over until I think it's
perfect. It also has gotten larger than Doom can easily handle, so
unfortunately you can't save your game while playing on map 31, because there
will be a save buffer overflow. I could have gotten rid of many of the
enemies and the problem would go away, but I've made it so that you really
need all of them to add to the general feeling to the level, and besides,
it's almost like a feature because then you really feel like you've
accomplished something when you win, rather than having just saved every
five seconds and oopsed your way through it all. You really have to
start off with a low skill level, though, unless you like restarting from
the beginning a lot. It helps to know your way around before you try to
really challenge yourself to skill four. I don't say skill five, because
Nightmare skill just really sucks, as the game will tell you if you try
to use it now. It just makes it annoying, since all the monsters just come
right back and the ammo doesn't, so you're left ammoless amongst more
monsters than is really necessary, and you can't accomplish anything because
they just come right back. But anyway, the whole game is pretty complete,
I've gone through so many things that it's ridiculous. If you find any
bugs, do NOT let me know, because then I may eventually make myself
release another version, and I am not doing that. I swore I wouldn't after
version 2.2, but this time I'm serious. When I get into this I can spend
way too much time on it; time which could be spent much more productively
towards other pursuits, so I'll be sighing a great big sigh of relief when
I finally upload this final version and say, "I'm really done this time."

2 - What to do to get it working
---------------------------------

Almost nothing! Just run the install file, dndinst3.bat, then press
[F] for Full install, and then answer whatever questions are asked, and
then you will have Duke Nukem Doom on your computer. It's easy! You
first of all, though, need Doom 2, and it can be almost any version.
1.666 and 1.9 have been tested and work, though 1.9 is probably going
to be the most reliable. Other versions will probably be very sketchy.
But if you have an earlier version than 1.666, you have a problem and you
suck. Go download an update patch. And, if you try and try and somehow
Duke Nukem Doom isn't working or won't install right or something,
E-mail me at 'LordDougy@aol.com' and I'll find you a way to get it working,
I guarantee it.
Also, I think a lot of what Duke Nukem says is funny, so I have
included as much of it as I could in places where it won't get too annoying
or old too quickly. Unfortunately for some people, some of his words may be
offensive. That's why, during the install, you can choose to disable these
words when you are asked about it. And, in my efforts to be user-friendly,
if you don't disable them during the install, you can go back and run the
install program again, and choose to disable it then, after installing.
Duke Nukem Doom is a conversion. It is not something you can run
with a batch file; it takes over your version of Doom. To use it after you
install it, just run Doom as you normally would. Of course, this may piss
some people off: "Hey! I want to keep Doom here!" Well, you can. That's
why there is room on hard drives for backing up the old files. While you
are installing Duke Nukem Doom, you are asked if you want all the original
Doom files to be backed up, and if you say Yes, you'll have everything
stored in a directory from which you can then restore Doom 2 to its
original state simply through running 'DND_Un.bat', my own little Duke Nukem
Doom uninstall program. Of course, if you have the room, you can just copy
everything in your Doom 2 directory to a new directory and then install Duke
Nukem Doom on one of the copies, and you'll have both Duke Nukem Doom and
original Doom 2 at the same time. Simple! The whole thing is pretty basic.

-----------------
3 - Other stuff
-----------------

Actually, there isn't any other stuff to talk about. I could list
all the changes in the game, or describe how I made it, or discuss how
expandable it is if you know how to edit Doom, or I could go on and on
about all the cool little things I've put into it that you probably won't
even notice, but I'm not going to because that simply would be quite boring.
You have no idea how much time I've spent on this, and how meticulous I've been
in trying to get every little thing to work. So, you have to just take this
for what it is, and what I've given you, and have fun. And distribute it, too!
I know Doom is like 80 years old, but still, it's fun, and this is something
different to enjoy, so stop complaining. Have fun.
