Playing Games
-------------

This is very easy. If you have a mouse, drag the piece you wish to
move from the square it is on to the square you want to move it to.
If you are using the keyboard, you can type in the move, using
coordinate notation: "e2e4 <return>" will play white's king pawn up 2
squares.

Rebel will respond with it's own move, which will vary from game to
game. You can continue to make moves, and play a game against Rebel.
If Rebel is taking too long to make a move, you can click the REBEL
button (or press Alt-M) to force it to move.

Perhaps you'd like to play with the black pieces. Pull down the CFG
(configure) menu (F6 if you're using the keyboard), and select "Turn
board". Now you can start a new game by Pulling down the POS
(position) menu (F1 for keyboard users), and selecting "New Game".
Note in the menu there is a "^G" beside new game: this means you can
also hold down the Alt key and press G to reset the board. Mouse
users may also click the "G" button found on the lower right area of
the screen. To force Rebel to move click the REBEL button.

You'll notice as you play that if you play a common line, Rebel will
play the first few moves immediately. These lines are built-into the
opening book of Rebel. We'll talk more about what you can do with
opening books in other parts of the manual. For now, we just want to
point out that you can click the moves that appear at the bottom of
the screen to make the move. Force Rebel to move (click the Rebel
button, or press Alt-M), and now it is your move with black. Assuming
Rebel opened with either e4 or d4, the move list at the bottom of the
screen will contain the move "d7-d6". You can click on "d7-d6" and
the move will be played for you. If you see question marks beside any
of the moves down there it means that if Rebel had your position it
would not choose that move itself.

Take the time now to play a couple of games against Rebel. Be happy
if you win! Rebel is quite strong, especially on a fast computer. If
you want Rebel to suggest a move, you can press Alt-H, and Rebel will
play the move it thinks is best. (If you don't like the move, just
click the back-arrow to the left of the REBEL button, and that will
take you back one half-move.)

Once you're out of the opening book, Rebel shows you what it is
thinking. If you don't want to see this information, go to the CFG
menu, choose Info, and select None. If you want more information
displayed, you can choose Extended or Super War Room. You can find out
more about these options in the detailed part of the manual.

Using the Database
------------------

Rebel is not just for playing chess! It is also a full-featured game
storage system. Rebel even comes with grandmaster games to start your
collection. Under the DAT (database) menu (F4) select "Load
Database". A list of files will appear on the right side. Choose
"gamebase.dat".

The database is now loaded, but you haven't chosen a game to see yet.
Under DAT (F4) select "Load Game". A list of games will be displayed.
Choose any that you like. You can type a letter (or click on the
letter on the top row of the screen) to move quickly through the
database. Choose I, then select the game Ivanchuk-Kasparov, Linares
1991. Rebel returns you to the chessboard screen, with the game
prepared. You may click on the single-arrowed buttons (or use the +
or - keys) to move a half-move ahead or back, or use the
double-arrowed buttons (or Alt-F and Alt-B) to move 3 moves ahead or
back. You may also click on a move in the move list to jump directly
to that position in the game.

You may see an overview of the game by pulling down the EXT (extras)
menu, and selecting "Game Overview". This allows you to see the flow
of the game. You can even practice your chess here: find a long game,
and try to calculate the moves to get from one diagram to the next!

Some handy shortcuts for database work are:
Alt-D (D button) will load a new database.
Alt-L (L button) will load a new game.
Alt-N (N button) will move to the next game in the database.

We've covered just a few of Rebel's abilities. You can look at the
detailed areas of the manual for information on the advanced features
that Rebel provides. Oh, in case you decide to let somebody else use
the computer, you may exit the program by clicking in the top left
corner of the screen, or use Alt-X.
