WELCOME!
--------
Welcome to King's Quest 1: Quest for the Crown VGA! Finally, the fan-made
remake of the Sierra classic, which has taken 9 months in the making, is ready!

Nearly two decades ago, you were able to step foot on the soil of Daventry for
the very first time. Now, you can return to this realm, exploring the Kingdom in
it's full glory on your quest to become King! This is your chance to re-experience
the roots of adventure gaming once more and keep its spirit alive! King's Quest VGA
was created using an adventure game scripting program called Adventure Game Studio
(AGS) by Chris Jones.

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk

AGS is an excellent freeware program, and if you've ever entertained thoughts
of making your own adventure games then you should definitely check it out!

RECOMENDED SYSTEM REQUIRMENTS
-----------------------------
The game is compiled to run under Windows, and should run correctly under Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows 2000.

In order to get the most from King's Quest 1 VGA, your PC must meet the following
requirements:

* Pentium or higher processor, at least 233 Mhz
* SVGA display
* 1 MB Video RAM required, 2 Mb recommended
* 16 MB RAM
* MS-DOS 5.00 or higher, Windows 95/98/ME or Windows 2000.
* DirectX 7 or higher.
* About 45 Mb free disk space
* Sound card

If your system fails to meet these requirements, you may experience slowness and
choppiness while playing the game.

IMPORTANT: You should uninstall (or delete) any existing version of KQ1VGA from
your hard drive, prior to installing Version2.0.

NOTE: Save Game files from previous versions of King's Quest 1 VGA are not compatible
with version 2.0.

LOADING THE GAME
----------------
Before doing anything else, you should go to the options menu (or run the setup.bat
program) and ensure that 320x200 screen resolution is selected. Also, make sure you
have the latest version of DirectX installed (AGS requires DirectX 7 or higher) and
have selected the appropriate choices for Digital Sound (Sound effects) and Midi
music.

NOTE: The drop down selection boxes in the setup program don't appear to work properly,
but you can still click on them and then move through the different options with the
arrow keys.

To load the game, run kqmenu.exe, which displays the game launcher menu. The launcher
menu will display a variety of options, such as running the Game, adjusting game settings,
reading the game manual or visiting the Tierra website. Click "Play Game" to start the
game.

Alternatively, you may also run the KQVGA.exe file to begin the game.

NOTE: If the game will not load from the launcher menu, you will need to load it manually,
      by going into the folder where the game is installed and running the KQVGA.exe program.

Once loaded, the game plays identically to the old VGA Sierra point and click adventure games.
(i.e. Quest for Glory 1, King's Quest 5, Space Quest 4)

NOTE: If attempting to run the game gives you an error message saying, "Unable to Initialize
      320x200 mode." (or something similar to this), just change the resolution to 640x400 in the
      game options (or by running the Setup.bat). However, please be aware that doing so will
      noticeably slow down the game. However, it should, at least, allow you to play. Although,
      if the game runs correctly for you in 320x200 mode, please don't change it to a higher
      resolution. KQ1VGA has been designed to run in 320x200 mode, and may be extremely choppy at
      higher screen resolutions. And also, the music will not run in-sync with the games action.
      Furthermore, the game background screens and animations were all optimized for 320x200
      resolution, so using a higher resolution will not enhance the game in any way.

NOTE: Please view the game manual, which is provided with the game for more information on
      playing instructions and information. The manual is in HTML format and can be accessed by
      running the menu launcher (kqmenu.exe) and clicking "Game Manual".

REPORTING A BUG
---------------
The game has been thoroughly tested and we feel that it is relatively bug free at this
stage. This means that you *should* be able to play it through from beginning to end,
without encounter any bugs.

However, if you do happen to notice something odd, please report it in the category of our
forums designated "KQBugs"

Or email it to us at Rqbugs@hotmail.com

KNOWN ISSUES
------------
The following is a list of issues that we are aware that exist in the game. These are things
that cannot yet be fixed, due to the current limitations of AGS. If you encounter any of these,
just assume that we already know about them:

-Graham walks straight through other characters instead of walking around them.

-Looping sound effects sometimes stop and start again, mid-scene (when a text window
 appears sometimes, for example), instead of looping continuously.

-If you pick up a LOT of inventory items, the inventory window may run off the screen edge.

-The Moat Serpent's graphics sometimes overlap each other.

-Path finding problems (i.e. Graham may not always take the most practical and direct route
 to the point where the walk icon was clicked.)

If the game does happen to seize control from you and lock up, you can press CTRL, ALT and END
to close the program and return to windows.
