Readfi/Makefi Usage Notes				06 Aug 2001
=========================

Readfi and Makefi are a pair of previously undistributed tools by Henk
Kelder. He has kindly given permission to distribute them, as is.

fi.ini is a text version of some of the information stored in the "Installed
Features" object tree. This information is used by clifi, the command line
feature installer, and other tools that may need to run when the WPS is not
active. Various events can cause the data in this file to get out of sync
with data in the objects. When this occurs, the usual fix is to delete
fi.ini and reinstall the Feature Installer. This will force fi.ini to be
rebuilt. Henk's tools allow the problems to be analyzed and allow fi.ini to
be rebuilt without the reinstall.

Readfi reads fi.ini and translates the object handles to object ids and
outputs a report to the standard output.

Makefi walks the Installed Features" tree and builds a new fi.ini that
matches the tree content.

The usual caveats and warnings apply.

Using Readfi
============

To run readfi, start it from the command line. Readfi takes a single
optional argument, the location of the Installed Features folder. When
started, it responds:

 READFI - Reads and lists FI.INI

 USAGE: READFI [InstallDir]
 <WP_INSTALLED> points to x:\OS2\INSTALL\Installed Features
 Scanning directories in x:\OS2\INSTALL\Installed Features

 Hit any key...

where x: is the drive containing the Installed Features folder. Press enter
and fi.ini will be decoded and the report will be written to the standard
output.

Using Makefi
============

To run makefi, start it from the command line. Makefi takes a single
optional argument, the location of the Installed Features folder. When
started, it responds:

 MAKEFI - Makes a new FI.INI (as fi.new)
          Jan 31 2000, Made by Henk Kelder
 USAGE: MAKEFI [InstallDir]
 <WP_INSTALLED> points to x:\OS2\INSTALL\Installed Features
 Scanning directories in x:\OS2\INSTALL\Installed Features

Hit any key...

where x: is the drive containing the Installed Features folder. Press enter
and makefi will walk the tree and will write the generated fi.new to the
current directory.

Support
=======

This is not much support available. I do not have the source code and Henk
has moved on to other projects. However, I will be glad to answer any
questions I can:

I also monitor several of the comp.os.os2.* newsgroups.

Enjoy.
