Welcome to University Program of MIPS Technologies, Inc. MIPS University Program provides the professor with instruction materials to simplify the task of introducing RISC concepts and MIPS architecture. The general idea is to pull together existing resources, from presentation slides to simulator, into one package so that professor do not have to recreate those tools. The class materials include two presentations: 1) A RISC tutorial entitled, "RISC Architectures: Fundamentals, Design Alternatives, and Future". This 61 slide presentation offers a general introduction to RISC architectures. 2) A detail presentation on MIPS architecture, entitled, "MIPS RISC Architecture". This presentation contains over 150 slides on numerous aspects of the MIPS architecture, including instruction set, pipelines, cache memory, memory management, exception handling, and multiprocessing. This material is based on MIPS R3000 RISC Processor Architecture. The class materials are available in either FrameMaker or PostScript format on Unix, so that professors can modify the presentations as desired. They can be found under the following sub-directories: course.materials/Maker.format course.materials/PS.format In addition, the MIPS University Program provides an instruction level simulator called "SPIM". SPIM allows students to run MIPS assembly on various UNIX platforms (e.g. MIPS, DEC, SUN). SPIM also contains an X-windows interface which greatly simplifies the student's debugging task. Spim comes from University of Wisconsin-Madison and was written by Professor Jim Larus. It can be obtain via ftp.
