SYSTEM REQUIREMENT
==================

1. You must have Windows NT 3.51 or NT 4.0 installed as your
   main operating system.

2. If you are operating under NT 3.51, you must also have Windows
NT Service Pack #3 or #4 installed. The Service Packs fix bugs
in the Windows NT operating system that prevent the TARGA
software from working properly on certain systems. To obtain a
copy of the Service Packs, access Microsoft's FTP site at
ftp.microsoft.com. Be sure to also obtain and install the
latest patches to these Service Packs, also available on the
   Microsoft FTP site.

3. This release has not been qualified with Windows NT 4.0
   Service Pack 1.

KNOWN LIMITATIONS UNDER WINDOWS NT 4.0
======================================

Video for Windows Applications:
There is a "Video in a Window" redraw problem with
Truevision's GDI display driver when overlay is enabled.

If you move the video capture window when overlay is
enabled, your desktop does not redraw properly. In addition, menus
and dialog boxes that are placed on top of live video windows are
obscured, when overlay is enabled.

To work around this problem, use overlay ONLY when capturing
video. In addition, prior to capturing video,

    1. Position the video capture window on the
desktop so that it will not obstruct
        other menus.

    2. Turn on overlay.

    3. Once overlay is turned on, DO NOT move
the capture window or place other
windows on top of the capture window.

Make sure to turn overlay off prior to switching
between programs (ALT+TAB) or prior to minimizing the
Video for Windows application. Otherwise, the capture
window that is left active will remain on the desktop.

DVM Toolbox:
This application does not update its client area properly.
The menu items (File, Clip and Help) may be obscured when
a window is placed on top of the application and then
removed. To restore the menu items, click on the menu bar.
This problem is cosmetic and does not affect DVM Toolbox's
conversion capabilities.

Truevision DVR Control Panel:
The Desktop icon located in the Windows Control Panel
does not launch. Use the Display Control Panel.

UPDATING PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE SETUP SOFTWARE
===============================================

IMPORTANT NOTE: IF YOU ARE UPDATING TO VERSION 1.71 FROM A
PREVIOUS VERSION, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU FIRST USE THE
"unInstall TARGA" UTILITY PROGRAM IN THE TARGA PROGRAM GROUP
TO REMOVE THE PREVIOUS VERSION.

The "unInstall TARGA" utility will remove the shared program
files, standard program files, the program folder and its
contents, program directories, and program registries.

After the utility program removes the previous version, we
recommend that you run "CHKDSK /F" (CHECKDISK) from the DOS
command line in the Windows NT Main Program group. This
program eliminates crosslinked files and lost file allocations,
and will fix any problems associated with Installing/Uninstalling
software. If another application is in use, you will be asked
if you want to run CHECKDISK at startup... select yes, then
restart your computer.

After running CHKDSK/F, reboot the system prior to installing
the new version of the setup software.

NLE Applications: You should also uninstall and re-install
your non-linear editing applications under Windows NT 4.0.

WINDOWS NT 3.51/WINDOWS NT 4.0 INSTALLATIONS:
If your system is configured with two versions of
Windows NT (3.51 and 4.0), and you plan on using
the TARGA Setup Software under both operating systems,
you must specify a different destination directory.

For example: C:\TARGA2K351 (Windows NT 3.51)
              C:\TARGA2K40 (Windows NT 4.0)

Please note that in a dual-boot system configuration you
may also need to perform dual installations (or
re-installations) of other application software. Please
contact the appropriate software vendor(s) for information
on installing their software under these conditions.

IF YOU NEED DISKETTES
=====================

The v1.71 software release is distributed on CD-ROM instead
of diskettes. If you would like to order the TARGA Setup
Software for Windows NT on diskettes or a printed copy of the
Installation and Reference Guide, please contact Truevision
Technical Support at the numbers provided at the end of this
document.

CD-ROM FEATURE CONTENTS
=======================

Setup Software:
The CD-ROM contains installation software for both the
TARGA 1000 series and the TARGA 2000 series (TARGA 1000,
TARGA 1000 Pro, TARGA 2000, TARGA 2000 Pro, TARGA 2000
DTX, and TARGA 2000 RTX). Choose the setup software
directory necessary for your TARGA Graphics Engine.
The setup directory contains a MANUAL subdirectory.

TARGA Online Reference Manual:
The CD-ROM contains complete Online Reference Manuals for
each of the TARGA products in PDF format. These online
manuals contain all of the information necessary for using
your TARGA product, including several tips on HOW TO
OPTIMIZE FOR NON-LINEAR VIDEO EDITING.

These manuals will not be automatically installed to your
hard disk during software installation, but you can copy
them to your hard disk (or simply read from the CD-ROM).
Look in the MANUAL directory for your particular product.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are installing your TARGA product for
the first time, we strongly recommend that you read the
TARGA Online Reference Manual before proceeding.

You may view and print PDF files with the Adobe Acrobat
Reader, v2.1. For your convenience, Truevision has provided
a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader v2.1 on this CD-ROM. When
viewing the TARGA Online Reference Manual(s) in Acrobat,
important topics are highlighted in RED TEXT. Simply
click on any topic in red text for additional information.

HOW TO INSTALL ACROBAT READER AND OPEN THE TARGA PDF FILE
=========================================================

D:\TARGA2K\MANUAL\TARGA PDF file (where D: is your CD-ROM
   drive)

TROUBLESHOOTING
===============

440 FX:
Truevision has confirmed that machines configured with
Intel's 440FX PCIset and Truevision's TARGA 1000,
TARGA 1000 Pro, TARGA 2000, and TARGA 2000 Pro boards
are incompatible.

Truevision has developed a patch to address this problem.
Once testing is completed, it will be available on our
FTP site.

ADOBE PREMIERE:

"Video Source," found under the "Movie Capture" pull-down menu,
should NOT be changed within Adobe Premiere. Before launching
Adobe Premiere, set the video parameters using the "Video Input"
and "Video Output" control panels. These control panels are
found in the TARGA Windows Group. If the video source must be
changed, close Adobe Premiere first to set these parameters.

Adobe Premiere Video Capture in PAL Mode:
Premiere defaults to "Sync Video to Audio" (where the video
frame rate may change with respect to audio). This default
setting does not allow for correct 25 FPS capture in PAL video
format; therefore, the following settings must be added to the
PREM32.INI file:

[CAPTURE]
NoAudioMaster=1

DVCR:
Files captured with the following configuration exhibit a
fast playback problem:
  -8 bit audio
  -648 x 486 (NTSC), 720 x 486 (NTSC) or 768 x 576 (PAL)
  -Adaptec controller

DVCR CAPTURE AND PLAYBACK RESOLUTIONS:
Presently, if video passthrough is running, one cannot play
a file that was captured at a higher video resolution
than is currently active. Attempting to do so will result
in a dialog box informing you of the resolution discrepancy.
Clicking the OK button will result in Windows NT locking up.
Please be sure to use a video output resolution appropriate
to the movie file that you are attempting to play in DVCR.

However, you can play a file that was captured at a lower
resolution than what is currently active.

DVCR DEFAULT AUDIO PASSTHROUGH SETTINGS:
In order to achieve proper audio passthrough levels, set your
record and playback levels to 0 and 26 respectively.

GENLOCK WITH PRO BOARDS:
On new software installs, there is a known anomaly in the
initial state of the encoder where a certain timing
parameter may not be initialized correctly. This problem
will be fixed in a future release of the setup software.

To correct for this anomaly, go to the Video Output Control
Panel, click on the ADJUSTMENTS button, and select "Blackburst
Genlock Input." This will correctly initialize timing parameter.

Once this has been done, you can select your desired genlock
setting, and the TARGA board will operate correctly.

VIDEO INPUT CONTROL PANEL:
Under the Adjustments button there is an anomaly for vertical
and horizontal positioning. If these values are changed,
then canceled, the program does not return to the original
values. The original values can only be recovered by
re-entering the Adjustments dialog, selecting Default settings,
and then resetting to their previous adjustment.

TIPS AND SHORTCUTS
==================

Using the Truevision Breakout Box:
The setup software automatically detects the breakout box and
sets up the system configuration for BALANCED AUDIO. If you
are using RCA connectors instead of XLR connectors, you will
not hear audio. Open the Audio Control Panel and deselect
the Balanced Audio check box.

For other tips and shortcuts, refer to the TARGA Online
Reference Manual located on the CD-ROM.

BUG FIXES
=========

AUDIO BUG:
Version 1.71 includes a bug fix for those using the TARGA WAV
driver with Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge(TM). Previously,
during audio capture, buffer overruns and eventual software
lockups could occur. Version 1.71 fixes this problem.

TARGA AVI PLAYER.EXE:
The latest TARGA AVI Player.exe, included in this release,
fixes a memory problem that appeared with the last
version of the TARGA AVI Player (dated 7/19/96). If you
accessed the TARGA AVI Player as a stand-alone application
and played two AVI files consecutively, you would receive the
following error message: "ERROR, Cannot allocate a video
output buffer." You would then be unable to access
applets like DVCR or VidCap until you rebooted your system.

Adobe Premiere:
If you are using the "Export to TARGA" function, be sure to copy
the latest version of the TARGA AVI Player into the Premiere
directory. If you have a TARGA 2000, the file is found in
C:\TARGA2K\WIN32\APPS (where C: is your selected drive for
TARGA installation).
