Release: September 2000 Introduction: Softex Utilities Installation Guide ------------------------------------------------- The Softex utility provides Advanced Power Management (APM) for your Dell(r) Latitude(r) portable computer running the Microsoft(r) Windows NT(r) operating system. If you have an earlier version of the Softex Advanced Power Management (APM) installed, remove it before you install the updated version of APM. Refer to Uninstalling the Softex Advanced Power Management found later in this document for instructions. If you do not have an earlier version of the Softex Advanced Power Management installed, or if you have already uninstalled the previous version of Softex Advanced Power Management, then you are ready to install the new Softex Advanced Power Management (APM). Refer to Installing the Softex Advanced Power Management (APM) found later in this document for instructions. CAUTION: Do not reinstall any version of the Softex utilities earlier than 2.19 if you have installed the Windows NT Service Pack 4. If you do, your system may become unusable. Installation of the Softex Advanced Power Management (APM) should occur with the system undocked, and with any peripheral devices removed from the system. Uninstalling the Advanced Power Management Controller Utility -------------------------------------------------------------- Perform the following procedure to uninstall the advanced power management controller utility: 1. Click the Start button on the Windows NT Taskbar. Click settings, then control panel. 2. In Control Panel click add/remove programs. 3. Highlight Softex Adavanced Power Managerment. 4. Click remove. 5. The Softex Power Management Controller Uninstall window appears. 6. Click the icon to begin the uninstallation procedure. 7. When the Softex Power Management Controller Uninstall window notifies you that the uninstallation has successfully completed, click OK. The Reboot Now window appears. NOTE: You must reboot the system for the uninstallation to be recognized by the operating system. 6. Click Restart Now to restart the system. Installing the Advanced Power Management Controller Utility ------------------------------------------------------------ Perform the following procedure to install the power management Controller utility: 1. After downloading the executable file to your hard disk drive. 2. Double click on the APM_A06.EXE file. 3. A File Download window will appear, prompting you to either: Run this program from its current location or Save this program to disk. 4. Check Run this program from its current location and click OK. 5. A security warning may appear. Do you want to install and run "SETUP.EXE from C:\Dell\Drivers\oA05R"? 6. Click YES. 7. The Softex Power Management Controller Setup screen appears, and the Softex Power Management Controller Setup window displays the license agreement. 8. Read the agreement and then click Accept. NOTE: If you do not accept the license agreement, you cannot install the power management Controller utility. 5. Click the icon on the Softex Power Management Controller Setup window to accept the default installation directory. The Softex Power Management Controller Setup window monitors the installation and displays a status bar. 6. When the Softex Power Management Controller Setup window notifies you that the installation is complete, click OK. The Reboot Now window appears. NOTE: You must reboot the system for the installation to be recognized by the operating system. 7. Click Restart Now to restart the system. The system restarts. End of README.TXT =================
