INSTALLING RETAIL WINDOWS 2000 on the HP Notebook Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional comes factory-installed on your HP Notebook. The following procedure will install a retail version of Windows 2000 Professional. If you install a retail version of Windows 2000, you will need to manually install specific drivers on the the HP Notebook. This README file describes how to: * Prepare for software installation. * Install a retail version of Windows 2000. * Install video support for retail Windows 2000. * Install audio and modem support for retail Windows 2000. * Install integrated LAN support for retail windows 2000 * Install Pointing device support for retail Windows 2000. * Install HP utilities Requirements: * HP Notebook * Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM. * HP Notebook drivers for Windows 2000 Location: HP Notebook hard drive and on the Recovery CD in \HP\DRIVERS\W2K directory. Preparing the HP Notebook for Software Installation: HP recommends that you repartition and format your hard disk before installing retail Windows 2000. Follow the instructions below to partition your hard disk and create the hibernation partition. 1. Insert the bootable Recovery CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. 2. Boot the HP Notebook and press ESC When the HP Invent Logo appears. Select the CD-ROM/DVD as the boot device. 3. Select "Continue" on the Recovery screen to enter the menu. 4. Select "Advanced" on the Recovery CD-ROM menu. 5. Choose the option "Do not load operating system" then choose "hibernate partition only", make sure that the hibernate partition size window reflects "0M", then click Continue. 6. Click "OK" to proceed with repartitioning. 7. When message "Hibernation partition successfully created" appears on screen, press the reset button on the notebook. A diagnostic partition has now been created, and Hewlett-Packard's hardware diagnostics software has been placed on this partition. To use this hardware diagnostics software in the future, press F10 during boot of the system. Installing Windows 2000 Professional: 1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD in the CD-ROM drive. 2. Turn on the HP Notebook, press ESC when you see the HP Invent logo and select the CD-ROM/DVD as the boot device. 3. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press Enter to begin. 4. Read the Windows 2000 Licensing Agreement. Page Down until you reach the end of the document. Press F8 to agree. 5. In the list of existing partitions select the unpartitionspace and press ENTER. 6. Highlight your choice of file system (FAT or NTFS), then press ENTER. After formatting and copying files the HP Notebook will reboot and continue installation. 7. Click Customize to change your Regional settings if needed, then click Next to move forward. 8. Enter your name and organization, then click Next. 9. Enter the Product Key, then click Next. (The Product Key is located on the Certificate of Authenticity that you received with your retail version of Windows 2000.) 10. Enter a computer name and an Administrator password. Confirm the Administrator password then click Next. (The password is used to administer User IDs and Windows NT security. The computer name is used by other computers on the network to access your computer.) 11. Enter the correct Time Zone and Date and Time if necessary, then click Next. 12. At the "Completing the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard" window, remove the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and click Finish. The system will reboot. 13. At the "Welcome to the Network Identification Wizard" screen, click Next. 14. Give the appropriate choice on user logon, then click Next. 15. Click Finish to complete the Network Identification Wizard. Install video support for retail Windows 2000: The driver is located on the Recovery CD-ROM in \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\VIDEO. To install or upgrade the VIDEO driver: 1. Run SETUP.EXE from the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\VIDEO directory. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the VIDEO driver. 3. The driver will be installed and the system will reboot. (Upon successful installation, an ATI icon appears on the bottom right corner of the taskbar.) Installing audio support for retail Windows 2000: The Audio drivers are contained in the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\AUDIO subdirectory. To install or upgrade the Audio drivers: 1. Run ESSETUP.EXE from the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\AUDIO directory. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the drivers. 3. Select "Finish" to complete the installation and restart the noteook. Installing Modem support for retail Windows 2000: If you have an HP Notebook equipped with an internal modem you will need to identify which modem was supplied in order to install the appropriate driver. Your HP Notebook contains either a 3Com 56K V.90 Mini PCI Modem (combo) or 3Com V.90 MPCI Modem 556B (modem only). If your notebook is equipped with both a LAN port and a telephone jack you have the 3Com 56K V.90 Mini PCI Modem combo card and should use the drivers found on the HP\DRIVERS\\MODEM\PCICOMBO directory on the HP recovery CD. If your notebook is equipped with only a telephone jack you have the 3Com V.90 MPCI Modem 556B Modem only card and should use the drivers found on the HP\DRIVERS\\MODEM\PCIMODEM directory on the HP recovery CD. If your notebook is not equipped with a phone jack, then a modem was not supplied. If you have installed Windows 2000 Professional, and your HP Notebook contains a built-in 3Com V.90 MPCI Modem 556B, you need to install the modem drivers. The modem drivers are contained in the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\PCIMODEM subdirectory. If you are unsure which modem has been supplied, review Which_1.txt contained in the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM subdirectory. 1. Windows should discover your modem. If the modem is not recognize the modem, Use the Add/Remove Hardware wizard in Control Panel. 2. Click OK on the "Insert Disk" screen. 3. Browse to Modem driver directory: \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\PCIMODEM. 4. Click Next to install modem drivers. If you have installed Windows 2000 Professional, and your HP Notebook contains a built-in 3Com 56K V.90 Mini PCI Modem, you need to install the modem drivers. The modem drivers are contained in the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\PCICOMBO subdirectory. If you are unsure which modem has been supplied, review Which_1.txt contained in the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM subdirectory. 1. Open the Device Manager: Right-click on My Computer and select Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. 2. Double-click PCI Simple Communications Controller. 3. Click Reinstall Driver on the General tab. 4. Click Next. 5. Click "Display a list of the known drivers for this device So that I can choose a specific driver," and click Next. 6. Double-click Modems. 7. Click "Have Disk." Browse to the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\PCICOMBO and double-click WDHABBE.INF. 8. Click Open then OK to "Install from Disk" 9. Select 3COM 56K V.90 Mini PCI Modem. 10. Click Next. 11. Click Next. 12. Click Yes. 13. Click Finish and close the Device Manager. HP Notebook 3Com 10/100 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter Installation for Windows 2000 The LAN drivers are contained in the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\LAN subdirectory. Installing the Driver: 1. Make sure that the 3Com network adapter is connected to the network. 2. Open the Device Manager: Right-click on My Computer and select Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. 3. Double-click "Ethernet Controller", under "other devices". 4. Click Reinstall Driver on the General tab. 5. Click Next on the "Upgrade Device Driver Wizard" screen. 6. Select "Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver" and click Next. 7. Double-click "Network Adapters." 8. Click Have Disk and browse to \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\LAN directory on the recovery CD and select "NET556N5". 9. Click Open; and intialize driver installation by clicking "Next". 10. Select 3COM 10\100 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter and click Next. 11. Click Next to begin installation of driver. 12. Click Finish. 13. Close the Device Properties and the Device Manager. HP Notebook Pointing Stick Installation The Pointing Stick drivers are contained in the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\TRACKPNT subdirectory of the recovery CD. To install the Pointing Stick drivers in Windows 2000: 1. Start Windows 2000. 2. Logon. 3. Double-click the "My Computer" icon. 4. Open the "Control Panel" folder. 5. Open the "System" control panel. 6. Click the "Hardware" tab. 7. Click "Device Manager..." 8. Double-click on "Mice and other pointing devices." 9. Double-click on PS/2 mouse entry. Normally, the entry is named "PS/2 Compatible Mouse", "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse" or "Standard PS/2 Mouse" or "IBM PS/2 TrackPoint". 10. Click on the "Driver" tab. 11. Click "Update Driver..." 12. Click "Next" on the "Upgrade Device Driver Wizard" screen. 13. Under the question "What do you want the wizard to do?" Click "Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver" 14. Click "Next". 15. Wait for all hard disk activity to stop. 16. Click "Have Disk..." 17. Install the "tp4win2k.inf" driver from the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\TRACKPNT directory on the recovery CD. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT ENTER THE PATH OF THE REGULAR (Windows NT 4.0/Windows 95/Windows 98) DRIVER!!!! 18. Click OK. 19. Select IBM PS/2 TrackPoint, Click "Next". 20. Click "Next". 21. A "Confirm Device Install" message appears, Click "Yes" to continue the installation. 22. If the "Digital Signature Not Found" message appears, Click "Yes". At this time, Windows copies the TrackPoint driver files from the install disk to the system. 23. Click "Finish" to close the wizard, then click the "Close" button. 24. A "System Settings Changed" message should appear. Select "Yes" to restart the computer. If you don't see this message, restart your computer by selecting "Shutdown" from the "Start Menu". Installing Hewlett-Packard Configuration Interface (HPCI): This driver is located on the Recovery CD-ROM in \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\HPCI. The HP Configuration Interface device implements the following Features: * Undock security using the physical undock mechanism. * Auto standby on undock based on the bios settings. * Fn+ hibernate hot key. * On certain systems Volume and mute control implemented through the operating system which will actively be reflected in the user interface. * The Rewind, Play/Pause, Stop, and FForward button controls for a Music CD-ROM on the HP Notebook Installation instruction for the Windows 2000 Hewlett-Packard Configuration Interface: 1. Run the setup.exe program from the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\HPCI directory on the recovery CD. 2. Select "Install the HP Configuration Interface Software" from the installation screen. 3. Click OK to complete the installation. Installing the Intel(R) SpeedStep(TM) Technology Applet NOTE: Users with an HP Notebooks utilizing the Intel Celeron Processor may skip this section. The Intel SpeedStep files are located on the Recovery CD under: \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\SPEEDSTP. 1. Double-click SETUP.EXE in the SpeedStep directory. 2. When prompted, click NEXT. 3. Click FINISH to reboot your computer. (Upon successful installation, a SpeedStep icon appears on the bottom right corner of the taskbar.) Installing the OneTouch utility: This utility enables the support for the OneTouch buttons above the keyboard as well as the multimedia buttons on the front of your HP Notebook. 1. Run the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\ONETOUCH\SETUP.EXE from the Recovery CD-ROM, 2. Click on OK to confirm the installation of the utility, 3. Click Yes to reboot the system at the "End of Installation" window. HP Notebook USB FDD Installation The USB FDD drivers are contained in the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\FLOPPY subdirectory. To install the USB FDD drivers: 1. Connect the USB Floppy Disk drive to the computer. 2. The computer will identify that a new USB device has been added to the system, and will display the "Found New Hardware" wizard. Click the "Next" button to continue. 3. Windows will display the "Install Hardware Device Drivers" dialog. Select the default option, "Search for a suitable driver for my device. Click "Next" to continue. 4. Windows will display the "Locate Driver Files" dialog. Select "Specify a location" and click "Next." 5. Click the "Browse" button, and browse to the \HP\DRIVERS\W2K\FLOPPY subdirectory. Select "OK" to continue. 6. Windows should inform you that it has found a driver for the device. Click "Next" to install the driver. 7. Windows will inform you that it has finished installing the drivers for your new hardware. Click "Finish." Your new floppy disk is now successfully installed. You should see a floppy disk with a new drive letter added when you look inside "My Computer." Windows 2000 Power Management You may want to change the default power management settings in Windows 2000. The BIOS Power Management settings are ignored if ACPI is activated. To configure the power management do the following: 1. From Control Panel, double-click the Power Options icon. 2. Select the Hibernate tab. 3. Check Enable hibernate support. 4. Click Apply. 5. Select the Power Schemes tab. 6. Change the "Plugged in" options for Standby to "3 hours" and Hibernate to "4 hours" 7. Click the Advanced tab. 8. Check Always show icon on the taskbar. 9. Change the Power buttons options to your desired settings. 10. Select the Alarms tab. 11. In the "Critical battery alarm" box click the "Alarm Action" button. 12. In the "Power level" box, choose Hibernate as the action for the computer to do when the alarm goes off, click OK then click Apply.
