[FoneSync may be unable to view Notes Address Books not configured Locally] FoneSync is unable to view Address Books which are not configured as a Local database. Server based Name & Address Books cannot be accessed. In addition, Local Name & Address Books must be configured for Mail in order for the Notes PIM Viewer to access them. - Choose File\Tools>User preferences. - Select Mail from the selection bar on the left hand side. - Under Local address books add into the editbox, the names of the address books that are missing. (These can be added by clicking on the browse button and searching through the data folder in Notes.) - Click on OK. - Go into FoneSync and click on the Notes PIM Viewer icon. - You should now see your address book entries. [Database upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 does not enable new FoneList Number Formats] If you upgrade FoneSync from v3.0 to v3.1, the database is automatically upgraded. However the new number formatting features for Spanish, Italian and US numbers, will not be applied automatically. You will have to manually Resolve each Spanish, Italian and US number: - Right click on the number in your FoneList - Select "Resolve Number..." - Click OK Drag&Drop [Problem drag&dropping from Organizer if FoneSync Desktop window overlaps] Lotus Organizer 4.1 may not recognise the FoneSync Desktop window as a drag&drop target if the Desktop window is overlapping the Organizer application window. Do not have the Lotus Organizer window maximized when using FoneSync. Restore the Organizer window, and ensure that the FoneSync window is not on top of the Organizer window. Organizer should now allow you to drop contacts into FoneSync [Drag&Drop may not actually Drop your selected ACT! data] When you Drag&Drop an ACT! entry into FoneSync, you may occasionally notice that the contact dropped into FoneSync is not actually the same as the contact that you dragged from ACT!. Although there is no warning of potential problems, this will probably be due to invalid indexes in the ACT! database. Re-index your ACT! database. [Internet-only installation of Outlook does not support Drag&Drop to FoneSync] When installing Outlook (98 or 2000), you have various options for installation type. If you select "Internet only", Outlook will not support drag&drop into FoneSync. (Outlook 97 does not give you these options and should support drag&drop to FoneSync without any problems.) You will need to select an installation type other than "Internet-only". In Outlook 2000, this is set when you first run Outlook and can be changed via Tools\Options menu item and the "Reconfigure Mail Support..." button on the Mail Services tab. In Outlook 98, this is selected by running the setup program again. [Contacts must have First name or Last name to be put into FoneSync] Your PIM may allow contacts to be saved without a First name and Last name. FoneSync is unable to drag & drop these contacts into the FoneSync database. Ensure your PIM's contact entries have First names and/or Last names. [FoneSync installed in a long pathname exits after displaying the Splash screen] FoneSync will not start up properly when installed in a number of nested sub-folder. If the path to the FoneSync installation folder is very long eg. c:\Program Files\A long folder name\Another long name\FoneSync, FoneSync may exit after displaying the Splash screen. Uninstall and reinstall under a much shorter path using fewer sub-folders. Registration Wizard [Registration Wizard may not work if proxy server settings are incorrect] FoneSync Registration Wizard requires proxy server configuration option to make the registration wizard work through the proxy server. You should ensure that the proxy server client settings have been correctly configured. Update Wizard [Update Wizard may fail if using Pre Microsoft IE4 browser] Update Wizard may cause an invalid page fault error if the user is using a version of Microsoft Internet Explorer browser before IE4.0. The error is related to using an old version of comctrl32.dll. Update browser to latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. [Upgrading through a firewall may fail] Your firewall may prevent the Update Wizard from retrieving the information that is required for performing an Update. Communications [Cannot access Alcatel One-Touch's SIM "Directory 1"] Alcatel One-Touch handset displays 2 directories in SIM memory. We can only access SIM directory 2. FoneSync can only 'see' this part of the SIM via the phone's serial interface. [Cannot connect to Alcatel One-Touch if phone is accessing SIM "Directory 1"] FoneSync will fail to connect to the phone if the handset is in use and is inquiring SIM Directory 1. [Communications connection failure may be due to Palm Pilot software] The Palm Pilot's software on the PC may keep the COM port open all the time so that when you connect your Pilot and press the HotSync button it will Sync without any user intervention on the PC. The Pilot offers 3 options within its setup. HotSync Manager 1. Always available. 2. Available only when PalmPilot Desktop is running 3. Manual (You start HotSync Manager yourself) Selecting option 3 should free the COM port We recommend you use a different COM port for your connection if you have one. Otherwise you will have to reconfigure HotSync Manager as described. [SmartBeam IR device does not work with Windows 98 yet] SmartBeam unit (from Belkin) works under Windows 95 with the standard Windows IR setup. Under Windows 98, although the standard setup appears to be successful, the SmartBeam device will NOT function correctly. Will need to find new drivers for this device under Windows 98. [Important notes for users of Panasonic handsets] Some Panasonic handsets, in phonebook mode, may cause a comms error. Some European Panasonic handsets may produce a communications error if it is in phonebook mode - ie. if the handset's list of names and numbers are being displayed or searched. Early versions of the Panasonic G600 handset will not be able to connect to FoneSync. FoneSync consistently produces an error when communicating with the handset. A software upgrade for your Panasonic G600 phone is available, which will prevent this error from occurring. To obtain this upgrade, contact your nearest Panasonic Service Centre; refer to your handset's warranty card for details. The supplied serial cable has a switch which must be set accordingly: SMS - allows the cable to work with FoneSync, FoneBook and FoneNote software. DATA - allows the cable to work with the Panasonic Software Modem. If you experience problems communicating with your handset, check the switch on the supplied serial cable. Take the handset out of any menus it may be displaying. [Infrared communications may be unreliable unless set to "Limit connection speed"] If you are using an Infrared connection to communicate to your phone, it is recommended that you configure you Infra red settings to limit the connection speed to 9600 baud. On a default installation this option has been disabled which means the IR connection is attempted at 115200 baud. This will cause problems when connecting to the IR ports on the phones which may only support baud rates of about 9600 baud. - In Control Panel, double-click the Infrared icon. - Click on the Options tab. - Select the checkbox for "Limit connection speed to:" - Select 9600 for the speed (or else the appropriate speed for your handset.) [May be unable to connect to the handset when PCMCIA datacards use Win98 drivers] When inserting a PCMCIA datacard for the first time, Windows 98 may recognise the datacard as a standard PCMCIA card and install a default 'mdmgen.inf' driver. When configuring a handset with this driver the handset wizard may not be able to detect the phone. Always install PCMCIA datacards using the setup disks supplied by the datacard manufacturer. [Ericsson T18d Secure locations may be overwritten] The Ericsson T18d has a secure memory feature that allows the user to store individual entries within the phone's phonebook. A four digit security code is needed to read or edit the data stored within theses locations. If you attempt to Synchronize with the handset, FoneSync will ask you for a security code. If you choose not to enter a security code and press OK, FoneSync will overwrite the data on the handset including the Secure locations. We recommend that when synchronizing, you always respond with the correct security code. [Some handsets may not support Pause and Wait characters in a FoneList] You may get an error writing numbers to certain handsets if the numbers contain Pause and Wait characters. Some handsets (eg. Nokia 5160) require Pause and Wait ("p" and "w") characters to be lowercase. Some handsets (eg. Ericsson 300, 600 and 700 series TDMA phones D,K and L model prefixes) do not support Pause and Wait characters through the serial cable interface even though these can be entered directly via the keypad on the phone. Ericsson GSM 300 series truncates at any detected "P" character. If an error occurs, try converting these characters to lowercase. If the error still occurs, these characters may be unsupported and need to be removed from the number. [FoneSync removes Name and Number Groups on Nokia 61xx handsets] If you have Groups set up on your Nokia 6110, these are lost when you WRITE to the handset using FoneSync. We also lose one-touch dialling profiles. The Group feature allows you to assign the names in your phone to a group e.g. VIP, Family etc. You can then choose to divert a group to Voice Mail. [Some instances of failure may require Synchronization to be cancelled] Errors on synchronization give the option to retry or cancel. Retry on some error types will not guarantee a resumption of synchronization. Click Cancel, then start synchronization again if retry does not resume synchronization. [Some handsets may reject entries without a call number] A FoneList entry can be created with a name but no associated number. If you attempt to write this to the handset, the handset may reject this and produce a write error. Ensure each name in a FoneList has an associated call number. [Invalid characters in the phone number field may cause write error] If your phone number contains characters such as an apostrophe, question mark, space (!) or other foreign characters that are not supported by your handset, then synchronization may fail with the following message: "FoneSync could not write to a location in the handset". Click Cancel on the error message and view the FoneList. Check whether the first Contact that has not been synchronized with the handset contains any invalid characters. Remove any invalid characters and start synchronization again. [T18d Security code should not be changed while reading/writing to handset] If the Security code is changed while synchronizing with FoneSync, you will not be able to synchronize again until the handset has been reset. This is necessary to protect the security coded entries. We recommend that you do not change the security codes during a synchronization operation. [Entering incorrect Ericsson T18d security code causes lock out from PC interface] On the Ericsson T18d, if you do not get your security code correct after 3 attempts, you are locked out from accessing the phone via the PC interface. If you enter or reset the security code via the handset's interface, then you can proceed to once again use the phone via the PC interface. Install/Uninstall [Setup may fail if "Auto Protect" option in Norton AntiVirus is enabled] Setup may have difficulty in creating the installation if Norton AntiVirus has the "Auto Protect" feature enabled. Typically, you may see an error message such as: "Error isset_se an error has occurred ..." Disable the "Auto Protect" feature of Norton AntiVirus during the installation. [Product should be installed via the User account that will use the software] FoneSync should be installed whilst logged in as the user that will be using the software. There should only be one installation of FoneSync per PC. You cannot have multiple user accounts that share FoneSync on a PC.
