INTRODUCTION Welcome to HP TopTools for Desktops Agent, Hewlett-Packard's client manageability software. This version is based on the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). It provides enhanced manageability for HP PCs. 2. WHAT'S NEW IN RELEASE 5.0 / WMI - This is the first WMI-based version of the TopTools for Desktops Agent - Browser-based user interface - New Report tab, which provides a printable report about the configuration of your HP PC. - New e-DiagTools tab providing an integration with HP e-DiagTools, HP's e-support solution - Access to the serial numbers of hard disk drives - Universal Unique IDentifier (UUID) displayed by TopTools Agent 3. REQUIREMENTS This HP TopTools for Desktops Agent software package can be used with many recent Hewlett-Packard personal computers models. Please consult the support matrices on the Web under the heading TopTools at http://www.hp.com/go/vectrasupport (or kayaksupport, or omnibooksupport) for details. Other pre-requisites: - Microsoft Windows 2000 - 16 Mb free disk space on your PC (after installation, you should delete the temporary installation files). - If you intend to use the local user interface, a 800*600, 256 color display or better is needed (use small font). - If you want to use the Support web page feature (access to a pre-defined web page containing support information from a button in the Agent window) a web browser and a networking stack needs to be installed. 4. INSTALLATION, UPGRADE, UNINSTALLATION 4.1 Standard (interactive) installation Since the information accessed by WMI is specific to each computer, you must install TopTools for Desktops Agent on each managed PC separately. TopTools for Desktops Agent 5.0 / WMI may have been delivered to you pre-installed on your hard disk. In this case, no further installation or configuration is needed. To check whether TopTools for Desktops Agent is already installed, click Start > Programs > > HP TopTools for Desktops. If this is not the case, you are able to install from either of the following media: - Software package downloaded from one of the websites: http://www.hp.com/toptools http://www.hp.com/go/vectrasupport http://www.hp.com/go/kayaksupport http://www.hp.com/go/omnibook - HP TopTools CD-ROM orderable from the website: http://www.hp.com/toptools You need to have Administrator capabilities on your target PC. Proceed as follows. Start Windows, if it is not already running. Run the executable file named something similar to TTWP5033.EXE. A Windows-style wizard will guide you through the installation. By default, TopTools Agent is installed in the directory C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\TopToolsWMI It is not necessary to restart the PC directly after the installation. There is one optional module that you may choose to install or not: HP TopTools' local graphical user interface. It is required if you want to manage your PC locally, optional if you only want to do remote management. Notes: - Installation will launch software agents used to make the PC manageable remotely. - SMART hard disk measurements are initialized when installing TopTools for Desktops Agent on a PC. 4.2 Batch installation If you want to install the TopTools package on a client machine without user intervention, some command-line options can be provided for the installation. For instance, the command: TTWP5033 /s /v/qn will perform a silent and unattended installation. It is possible to supply an initialization file, named SETUP.INI, with your custom installation parameters. By default, this file should be named SETUP.INI and placed in the same directory as the installation program. It is also possible to supply a different file name or path, but in that case, you must indicate the full path to the file, even if it resides in the current directory, as shown : TTWP5033 /v"INIFILE=\"C:\My Documents\mysetup.ini\"" You need to place a backslash (\) in front of any quotation mark that resides within existing quotes. If the path to the initialization file contains spaces then you need to use quotes. If you require a silent installation all other options must go inside the existing quotes and the command line will be: TTWP5033 /s /v"INIFILE=\"C:\My Documents\mysetup.ini\" /qn" Notice that there are no spaces between the command-line option (/v) and the arguments that you are passing, as can be seen in the above examples. The syntax of the initialization file file is as follows. It is composed of two sections: - [SetupInstall] to set the installation parameters. - [GeneralInfo] contains default values used by the batch installation process for some WMI values. * The Installation Section [SetupInstall] This section contains the following items: - InstallTopToolsUI Possible values are 1 or 0. The local user interface (window and tray icon) of the TopTools for Desktops Agent will be installed if InstallTopToolsUI=1 (default). - InstallDir Installation directory (full path). Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: InstallDir=C:\WMI * The General Information Section [GeneralInfo] This section contains default values used by the batch installation process for some attributes. Notes: - The values for all of these attributes, except PCSerialNumber, can be changed after the installation process. PCSerialNumber is automatically updated during installation if the system supports it. - MonitorSerialNumber is automatically updated if the monitor and the BIOS support DDC calls. - The attributes SystemName and SystemUserName are managed by WMI directly, thus they cannot be set through the SETUP.INI file. The list of attributes is as follows: - SystemUserPhone User's phone number. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: SystemUserPhone="(123) 456-7890" - SystemPhysicalLocation Short description of the location of your HP Vectra PC. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: SystemPhysicalLocation="where the system is" - PCAssetNumber If your company uses asset numbering, asset number of your HP PC. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: PCAssetNumber="asset number of the system" - MonitorSerialNumber Monitor serial number written at the back of your monitor. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: MonitorSerialNumber="serial number of the non DDC monitor" Note: this field is not needed if the monitor and the BIOS support DDC calls and you are running Windows 95 or 98. - MonitorAssetNumber If you company uses asset numbering, asset number of your monitor. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: MonitorAssetNumber="asset number of the monitor" Note: If the fields SystemUserPhone or SystemPhysicalLocation are omitted, and you are performing an upgrade, they will keep their existing values. As the final step, you would distribute the set of files including the correct SETUP.INI file to the target PCs and execute the setup program TTWP50nn.EXE with the desired command-line options on each machine. 4.3 Upgrading from an older version of TopTools Agent To upgrade, you may just install the new version on top of the old one. The values of user-settable attributes will be preserved. 4.4 Distributing/Upgrading TopTools Agents from the Device Manager From your TopTools Device Manager (version 4.5 or higher) you can select a group of PCs and launch the installation of the TopTools for Desktops Agent automatically on them, if they are running Windows NT or 2000. You can also upgrade to the latest TopTools Agent in a similar manner, for all operating systems (Windows 95, 98, NT or 2000). This feature can be combined with the use of a comma-separated file containing values to preset for attributes. For more information, refer to the TopTools Deployment Guide available from: http://www.hp.com/toptools. 4.5 Uninstalling the TopTools Agent TopTools for Dekstops Agent may be uninstalled by selecting "Add/ Remove Programs" in the Windows 2000's Control Panel. Then restart your PC. 5. RUNNING THE LOCAL MANAGEMENT APPLICATION If you have installed the local user interface of the TopTools for PCs Agent, you can bring up the corresponding window by left- clicking on the tray icon on the taskbar that shows a PC and the TopTools logo in the background. As an alternative, click Start > Programs > Hewlett-Packard > HP TopTools for Desktops. By pressing the tabs in the window, you get access to the following tools, each of which displays and/or lets you change information on different aspects of your HP PC: - Identity: summary of basic, general information. - Status: provides status information and an alert log. - Configuration: specific information about the components of your system. - Security: allows you to view and manipulate the security features of your PC, e.g. disable the floppy disk drive. - e-DiagTools: provides integration with Hewlett-Packard's hardware diagnostics solution. - Report: a printable report listing overall information about your PC in a printable format. (To get a hard copy, first click in the frame, then use the File > Print command.) - Support: provides access to pre-defined web pages containing support information (requires web access). 6. IMPORTANT NOTES - Security tool, Shutdown page: the function "prevent shutdown" is greyed out (disabled) for most PC models, because ACPI does not allow TopTools to perform this operation. However, the function works on HP Kayak XM600 and XU800, which are equipped with special hardware. - Configuration tool, Mass Storage page: if you are not logged in with Administrator rights, you will not see the manufacturer, model, and size of your disk drives. This is a known bug in WMI. - Report tool: does not report unused IRQs, only active ones. - Security tool, Settings & Actions page: Whenever "Floppy Disk Drive enabled", "Serial Port A Enabled", "Serial Port B Enabled", or "Parallel Port Enabled" are changed (checked or unchecked), you must restart the target PC to activate the changes. Be sure to save setting before rebooting. - Security tool: to perform security-related operations, you will be prompted to enter the BIOS-level Administrator password of the PC, if one is set. - When changing the passwords, only use English language alphanumeric keyboard characters to maintain consistency with the system BIOS. - On HP Kayak XM600: - You can lock your PC Workstation using TopTools. The on/off button will be locked. However, the buzzer will not sound when the button is pressed. - With BIOS IC.11.05, TopTools will report the presence of two fans within a desktop chassis, even though only one is physically installed. This issue is solved by the next BIOS release. - With BIOS IC.11.05, it is not possible to disable the floppy disk drive. This issue is solved by the next BIOS release. - On HP Kayak XU800: - If you have two processors, only one measure of processor voltage is reported, common to both processors. - With BIOS IA.11.04, if you disable the floppy, you cannot re- enable it through TopTools. Instead, use the BIOS Setup program and set the parameter FDD A to 1.44 Mb. This will be fixed by the next BIOS release. - For more information about Power Management in ACPI mode, please refer to the white paper "New Power Management on HP PCs" available from the website http://www.hp.com/go/vectrasupport (select "Technical Notes", then "HP Vectra All Models"). In particular, for manageability purposes we recommend configuring the Shut Down command so that it goes to the Hibernate state rather than the Off state. - If your configuration includes a Zip drive installed as IDE Master and a SMART IDE hard disk as Slave, TopTools cannot read the SMART information from the hard drive. We recommend installing the Zip drive as Slave. 7.
