To view Pws.txt on screen in Notepad, maximize the Notepad window.

To print Pws.txt, open it in Notepad or another word processor,

MICROSOFT PERSONAL WEB SERVER OVERVIEW
======================================

Welcome to the Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS).

Microsoft Personal Web Server is a network file and application server 
that transmits information in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) pages 
using the HyperText Transport Protocol (HTTP). It provides most of 
the functionality of Microsoft Internet Information Server, including 
the ability to do the following: 

- Publish Web pages on the Internet or over a LAN on an intranet.
- Transmit or receive files using the FTP service.

Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows 95 is an easy-to-use and 
easy-to-manage Web server that supports the following features: 

- HTTP service
- FTP service
- ISAPI and CGI scripts 
- ODBC32 data source and HTTP links to ODBC (HTTPODBC) 
- Pass-through security to NT and Novell NetWare
- Local-user security if Microsoft File and Print Sharing is not 
  installed
- Security Socket Layer
- Remote administration (Web-based application)

PWS INSTALLATION
================

To install the Personal Web Server, go to Network in the Control 
Panel and press Add, select Service, press Add, select Microsoft
from the Manufacturers column, double click on Personal Web
Server, and press OK on the network control panel.

By default your home page is C:\Webshare\WWWroot\DEFAULT.HTM.  You
can edit this file to fit your needs.


PWS ADMINISTRATION
==================

PWS can be administered remotely by any client running an Internet 
browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. 
To access the Web-based application, you can:

- Open Control Panel, double-click the Personal Web Server icon, 
  click the Administration tab, and then click the Web Admin button.

  -or- 

- Right-click the Personal Web Server icon on the taskbar, and then 
  click Administer.


PWS SECURITY SYSTEM
===================

Access controls are set to directories only, as for the Windows 95 
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft network or NetWare network 
using user-level security.

Pass-Through Security
---------------------
- If your computer is set up for user-level access control over a 
  network, then the names you add to the user list for Personal Web 
  Server on your computer must also be in the user list for the NT 
  domain, NetWare server 3.x, and NetWare 4.x using Bindery emulation. 
  For more information, see your Windows 95 documentation.

- Like Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), PWS uses a secured 
  client authentication based on Windows NT security protocol. 

Share-Level Security
--------------------
- If your computer is set up to use share-level security, you cannot 
  use a user list to restrict access to your Web page. 

Local-User Security
------------------- 
- If Windows 95 is not configured to support File and Print Sharing 
  for Microsoft network or NetWare network, PWS will use a local user 
  database to manage user-level security for your Web server virtual 
  roots and their subdirectories.

- Managing users is possible through the Web-based application.


KNOWN ISSUE
===========

- If you are using PWS with local-user security, the Windows 95 
  Dial-Up Networking server and the Remote Registry service do
  not work.  To disable local-user security go to Network in the
  Control Panel, highlight the Personal Web Server, press 
  Properties, and change the value of Use Local Security to FALSE.
