Frontier GlobalCenter Manual Installation Instructions ------------------------------------------------------ This file provides the information you need to manually set up your Frontier GlobalCenter account. This information is ONLY for LAN administrators or advanced users. It assumes you know how to configure networking on your system. It applies to all supported PC-compatible operating systems (Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, and Windows NT 4.0). This file contains: * Instructions for Obtaining a Frontier GlobalCenter Account * Frontier GlobalCenter Configuration Parameters * Additional Windows 95 Instructions * Additional Windows 3.1x Instructions * Additional Windows NT 4.0 Instructions BEFORE YOU BEGIN ---------------- Before beginning the setup, you must contact a Frontier GlobalCenter Representative at 1-800-530-5045, and sign up for an account. You will be given: * Login name (also called a username) * Password * Local access telephone number You must have all three of these to complete the setup. FRONTIER GlOBALCENTER CONFIGURATION PARAMETERS ---------------------------------------------- Use the following parameters to configure your computer system: Internet Access User Name Enter pri/P and then your Frontier GlobalCenter login name (in all lowercase) as your username. For example, if your username is joeuser, enter pri/Pjoeuser in the box. IP Address Assigned automatically by Frontier GlobalCenter Primary DNS Server Address 206.165.5.10 Secondary DNS Server Address 206.165.50.10 Mail User Name Frontier GlobalCenter login name, in all lowercase letters (Do not use the pri/P here. The pri/P is used ONLY in your dialer.) Mail Password Frontier GlobalCenter password E-mail Address Login name, followed by @primenet.com For example, if your login name is joeuser, enter joeuser@primenet.com in the box. Incoming Mail Server (POP) pop.primenet.com Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) smtp.primenet.com News Server (NNTP) news.primenet.com ADDITIONAL WINDOWS 95 INSTRUCTIONS ---------------------------------- 1. Make sure the following network components are installed: Client for Microsoft Networks Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP WARNING: If you are not on a network, you should only have one copy of TCP/IP installed. If you are on a network, you should have only one copy of TCP/IP listed as being bound to the dial-up adapter (TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter). Additional copies can interfere with connecting to Frontier GlobalCenter. 2. Create a dial-up networking connection named GlobalCenter. Note: You may want to select Autosetup Connection or copy this connection to the desktop. 3. In the Connection properties window,verify the Type of Dial-Up Server is set to PPP: Windows 95 Internet. If it is not, scroll down and select it from the list. 4. Under Advanced Options, verify that: * The Log on to Network box is NOT checked. * The Enable Software Compression box IS checked. * The Required Encrypted Password box is NOT checked. Under Allowed Network Protocols, verify that: * The NetBEUI box is NOT checked. * The IPX/SPX Compatible box is NOT checked. * The TCP/IP box IS checked. 5. Click the TCP/IP Settings button and do the following: * Verify that Server Assigned IP Address is selected. * Click Specify Name Server Addresses and when the four boxes below are available, enter the following: Primary DNS : 206.165.5.10 Secondary DNS : 206.165.50.10 Leave the Primary WINS and Secondary WINS both set to 0.0.0.0 6. Verify that both Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway on Remote Network are checked. Return to the Dial-Up Networking window, and close it. ADDITIONAL WINDOWS 3.1x INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------------------ If you have successfully installed the Frontier GlobalCenter software but cannot successfully complete the registration server process, follow these instructions to manually set up your account. 1. Double-click on the Connection Wizard icon to start the registration wizard. Select Manual configuration. When asked, enter your user name,local access telephone number, and configuration parameters as described in "Before You Begin" and "Frontier GlobalCenter Configuration Parameters," above. Leave your password blank. Set up an Internet Mail account and an Internet News account, but do not set up an Internet Directory Service account. 2. When you have completed the configuration, click Finish. 4. Double-click the Frontier GlobalCenter icon to connect to the Internet. ADDTIONAL WINDOWS NT 4.0 INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------------------- To connect to the Internet, you must manually configure the NT connection software, Remote Access. 1. From the Start Menu, choose Settings, and then choose Control Panel. 2. In the Control Panel, double-click the Network icon, and then select the Services tab at the top of the Network window. 3. Check that the Network Services list includes both Remote Access Services and Simple TCP/IP Services. If one or both of these services is not listed, you need to install them now. 4. To install network services, click Add in the Network window, and then select the service that you need to install from the Select Network Service list. When installing Remote Access Services, Windows NT tries to automatically detect your Ethernet card. If the operating system cannot detect what type of Ethernet card you have, or if you do not have an Ethernet card, Windows NT prompts you to select an Ethernet card from the Network Adapter list. If you do not have an Ethernet card, select MS Loopback Adapter from the list. Windows NT may also try to automatically detect your modem if you have not previously installed one. Click Continue. 5. In the Network Window, verify that both Remote Access Services and Simple TCP/IP Services are installed, and then click the Protocols tab. Verify that the TCP/IP Protocol is installed. If this protocol is not installed, you need to install it now. 6. To install the TCP/IP Protocol, click Add, and then select TCP/IP from the protocols list. You may be prompted for to load your original Windows NT CD-ROM during this portion of the setup. 7. Verify that Remote Access Services, Simple TCP/IP Services, and TCP/IP Protocol are all installed, and then click Close in the Network Window. When the operating system advises that it needs to restart your computer, click Yes. 8. In the new Windows NT session, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop. In the My Computer window, double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon. * If you are opening Dial-Up Networking for the first time, the Phonebook wizard will guide you through the setup. * If you already have Phonebook entries, press New to create an Entry for GlobalCenter. If the Phonebook wizard does not start when you click New, do the following: * Press Cancel. * Click More and then select User Preferences. * On the Appearance tab, check Use Wizard to Create New Phonebook Entries. 9. When the wizard starts, in the Name the New Phonebook Entry box, type: GlobalCenter. Click Next to continue. Warning: Do not check the I Know All About Phonebook Entries box. The wizard will abort if you do. 10. For Check All That Apply, check these entries: I Am Calling the Internet, and Send My Plain Text Password If That's the Only Way to Connect. Do NOT check the third entry. Click Next to continue. 11. Enter your local Frontier GlobalCenter access phone number. If you need to dial any extra numbers (such as 9 to get an outside line, or *70 to disable call waiting), you must configure them in the Telephony Control Panel. If you already have dialing properties configured in the Telephony Control Panel, check Use Telephony Dialing Properties for them to take effect. Otherwise, leave the box unchecked. Click Next to continue. 12. Click Finish to exit the wizard. 13. You should now be back in the Dial-Up Networking window, and GlobalCenter should be listed as the phonebook entry to dial. Click More and then select Edit Entry and Modem Properties. 14. Select the Server tab and verify that: * Under Dial-Up Server, "PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet" appears. * Under Network Protocols, only TCP/IP is selected. * Both Enable Software Compression and Enable PPP LCP Extensions are selected. Click TCP/IP Settings. 15. Verify that Server Assigned IP Address is selected. Manually select Specify Name Server Addresses. When the four boxes below become available, enter the following: Primary DNS : 206.165.5.10 Secondary DNS : 206.165.50.10 Leave the Primary WINS and Secondary WINS both set to 0.0.0.0 16. Verify that both Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway On Remote Network are checked. Click OK to return to the Server tab. Click OK again to return to the Dial-Up Networking window. 17. Now that you have created the entry, click on More and then select Create Shortcut to Entry. (This procedure will place the GlobalCenter icon on your desktop.) In the Create Dial-Up Shortcut window, Desktop should appear in the Look In box. If it does not, scroll down and select Desktop from the list. Click OK and then close the Dial-Up Networking window. 18. To get ready to dial, double-click the GlobalCenter icon on your desktop. 19. In the Connect to GlobalCenter window, do the following: * In the User Name box type pri/P followed by your Frontier GlobalCenter login name (in lowercase letters). For example: pri/Pjoeuser NOTE: When dialing into Frontier GlobalCenter under Windows NT, pri/P always precedes your login name. This notifies our server that you will be using a PPP connection. * In the Password box, type your Frontier GlobalCenter password. Because Frontier GlobalCenter's password system is case-sensitive, make sure that your Caps Lock key is off. * Leave the Domain box empty. * If you want to save your password so that you don't need to type it each time you connect to your Frontier GlobalCenter account, check the Save Password box.Be aware that saving your password compromises your security because anyone who uses your computer can also use your Frontier GlobalCenter account. 20. To dial, click OK. Once you are connected to Frontier GlobalCenter, you can minimize the status window and open any of your Internet applications, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer. Caution: If you close the Dial-Up Networking window, you will disconnect from GlobalCenter. To log off from GlobalCenter, click the Disconnect button. To connect to Frontier GlobalCenter from now on, you need only double-click the GlobalCenter icon on your desktop and then click OK. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Microsoft is a registered trademark in the United States and other countries.
