This document is divided into two sections: -Installation Notes and -Remote Access Setup Installation Notes ------------------ You must have Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 4 installed on your system to properly set up PrimeConnect. If you are on a Local Area Network (LAN), do NOT proceed with this installation without first consulting your LAN Administrator. Running this setup may affect your network settings. The Frontier GlobalCenter Setup will install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 (your World Wide Web browser) and Microsoft Outlook Express (your email program). Please respond to all prompts appriately. After the installation portion of the setup, your computer will ask to restart. Allow it to do so. DO NOT MANUALLY RESTART YOUR COMPUTER! After your computer restarts, you will need to complete the Remote Access Setup below. Remote Access Setup ------------------- Windows NT users must manually configure the NT connection software, Remote Access, to connect to the Internet. Before beginning the setup process below, you must contact Frontier GlobalCenter Sales at 1-800-463-8386, ext. 3, and obtain a username, password, and local access phone number. Once you have done this, you may complete the setup. If you are on a TCP/IP-based Local Area Network (LAN), consult with your LAN Administrator before completing the setup. You may lose network connectivity while connected to the Internet. 1. In the "Main" window of the Program Manager, double-click on "Control Panel." Then double-click on "Network." 2. In the list of Installed Network Software you will need to have "Remote Access Service," "Simple TCP/IP Services," and "TCP/IP Protocol" installed. 3. If you do not have "Remote Access Service" installed, click "Add Software..." and select "Remote Access Service" from the the list. Click "Continue." Windows NT may prompt you for the path to the distribution files, which will be on your original Windows NT 3.51 floppy disks or CD-ROM. Enter the correct path and click "OK." If "Remote Access Service" is installed, click it once to select it, and click "Configure..." 3a. You should now be in the "Remote Access Setup" window. The COM port your modem is installed on and your modem's name should be listed. If they are not, click "Add..." Select the correct COM port for your modem. Then click "OK." Remote Access will then prompt you that it will try to detect your modem. Click "OK" to let it do so. 3b. You should now be in back in the "Remote Access Setup" window. Click "Configure..." and verify that the "Port Usage" is set either to "Dial out only" or to "Dial out and Receive calls." Click "OK" 3c. Click "Network" in the "Remote Access Setup" window, and verify that only "TCP/IP" is selected from the list of "Dial out Protocols." Click "OK." Click "Continue" to exit "Remote Access Setup." Windows NT may prompt you for the path to the Windows NT distribution files, which will be on your original Windows NT 3.51 floppy disks or CD-ROM. Enter the correct path and press "Continue." 4. You should then be back in the "Network Settings" window, and "Remote Access Service" and "TCP/IP Protocol" should both be in the list of Installed Network Software. If you do not have "Simple TCP/IP Services" listed, click "Add Software..." 4a. Select "TCP/IP Protocol and related components" from the list of Network Software. Click "Continue." In the "Windows NT TCP/IP Installation Options" window, under "Components," select "Simple TCP/IP Services." Click "Continue." Windows NT may prompt you for the path to the Windows NT distribution files, which will be on your original Windows NT 3.51 floppy disks or CD-ROM. Enter the correct path and press "Continue." 5. You should now be back in the Network Settings window. Click "OK." Windows NT may give you an error which states "The NetBEUI Protocol is either not installed or not configured for Remote Access..." Click "OK." The "TCP/IP Configuration" window may pop up. If an Adapter is listed, you must enter the IP address and subnet mask. You will need to get these settings from your Network Administrator. If there is not an Adapter listed, the settings will be unavailable (greyed out). Click "OK" when you are finished. 6. Windows NT will then prompt you that your network settings have changed and that you will need to restart NT for the changes to take effect. Click "Restart Now" to do so. 7. When Windows NT comes back up, you should have a new Program Group in your Program Manager, called "Remote Access Service." Double-click on it. 8. Double click on the "Remote Access" icon to open the Phonebook. If you have never been in Remote Access before, or if the phonebook is empty, Windows NT will prompt you to press "OK" to add a new entry. If not, click "Add" in the Remote Access window. 9. In the "Entry Name" box, type "GlobalCenter." If you need to dial a code to get an outside line (e.g. "9," or "1,") or to disable call waiting (e.g. "*70,") then type these in the "Phone Number" box. Then, type in your local Frontier GlobalCenter access number. In the "Description" box, type "Internet Service Provider." 10. Verify that "Authenticate using current user name and password" is NOT checked. If you have a button to the right labeled "Advanced >>", click it. Verify that "Port" shows the correct COM port and "Device" shows the correct name for your installed modem. 11. Click the "Modem" button at the bottom. In the "Modem Settings" box, verify that your correct modem is listed, and that the Initial speed is correct. Verify that the correct Hardware Features for your modem are selected from the list: "Enable hardware flow control," "Enable modem error control," and Enable modem compression." Do not check the "Enter modem commands manually" box. Press "OK." WARNING: Frontier GlobalCenter does NOT support modems that do not use hardware flow control. 12. Click "X.25" and verify that the PAD type is set to "(none)" and that the three boxes below it, "X.121 Address," "User Data," and "Facilities," are blank. Click "OK." 13. Click "Network" and verify that the dot to the left of "PPP" is selected. The box to the left of TCP/IP should be checked. NetBEUI and IPX should not be checked. "Request LCP extensions (RFC 1570)" should be checked. Click "TCP/IP Settings..." 14. At the top of the "PPP TCP/IP Settings" dialog box, the dot to the left of "Server Assigned IP address" should be selected. In the middle, click in the dot to the left of "Use specific name server addresses" to select it. Enter the following: DNS : 206.165.5.10 DNS backup : 206.165.50.10 Leave the "WINS" and the "WINS backup" both set to 0.0.0.0 15. Verify that both "Use VJ header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" are checked. Click "OK." Click "OK" again to return to the "Add Phone Book Entry" window. 16. Click "Security" and verify that the dot to the left of "Accept any authentication including clear text" is selected. Verify that under "Terminal or Script," both "Before dialing" and "After dialing" are set to "(none)." Click "OK." Click "OK" to return to the "Remote Access" window. 17. You are now ready to connect to Frontier GlobalCenter. Click "Dial." 18. You should now be in the "Connect To" window. In the box labeled "User Name" type in a capital letter P followed by your Frontier GlobalCenter login name, in all lower case letters. PLEASE NOTE: When dialing into Frontier GlobalCenter with Windows NT, your login name is ALWAYS preceeded by a capital letter P. This tells our server that you will be using a PPP connection. For instance if your login name is "joeuser" then you would type: "Pjoeuser" in the User Name box. 19. Type your Frontier GlobalCenter password in the box labeled "Password" For security reasons, it will show up as a line of asterisks. Remember that Frontier GlobalCenter's password system is case sensitive. Make sure that your CAPS LOCK key is not on. Leave the third box, "Domain" completely blank. 20. Click "OK" to dial. 21. Once Remote Access has verified your user name and password, a Connection Complete message may appear. Click in the boxes to the left of both "Minimize on dial" and "Do not display this message in the future." Then click "OK." You may now open any of your Internet applications. 22. To disconnect from Frontier GlobalCenter, double click on the Remote Access program icon at the bottom left corner of the screen. Then click "Hang-Up." Windows NT will then ask, "Disconnect from Frontier GlobalCenter?" Click "Yes." To connect in the future, all you will need to do is double-click on the "Remote Access" icon in the Remote Access Service window. Select the Frontier GlobalCenter entry and click on "Dial." Type in your password and click "OK". Additional Mail and News setup ------------------------------ These steps should be performed the first time you connect to Frontier GlobalCenter, and must be performed while connected to the Internet. Setting up Microsoft Internet Mail ---------------------------------- 1) Double-click on the Internet Mail icon in the Microsoft Internet Explorer program group. A window will appear asking you for a Logon Name and a Password. Type in your Frontier GlobalCenter username and password in the boxes. Click on OK. 2) A window will come up explaining that Internet Mail needs some information from you. Click on Next. 3) Type your real name in the Name box. Type your Frontier GlobalCenter username followed by @primenet.com in the Email Address box. For example, if your username was joeuser, you would type joeuser@primenet.com in the box. Click on Next. 4) The next screen asks for the Internet mail servers you will be using. Type pop.primenet.com in the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server box. Type smtp primenet.com in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server box. Note that these boxes may already be correctly filled in. Click on Next. 5) Type your Frontier GlobalCenter username in the Email Account box. Type your password in the Password box. Click on Next. 6) You're done. Click on Finish. Internet Mail will now start up and attempt to retrieve your email. Setting up Forte's Free Agent ----------------------------- 1) Double-click on the Agent icon in the Forte Agent program group. The License Agreement will appear. Read it and, if it is acceptable to you, agree to it. 2) The next window that opens will be called Free Agent Setup. Fill in the boxes as follows: News (NNTP) Server: news.primenet.com Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.primenet.com Email Address: type your email address here Full Name (optional): type your full name here if you wish to Time Zone: set this to your proper time zone. If you live in an area that does not observe Daylight Savings Time, then uncheck the appropriate box. Click on Next. 3) The next window will ask you to go online to retrieve a full list of newsgroups. Click on No. 4) Go to the Options menu and select General Preferences. The User tab should be in front. Put a checkmark in the "Server requires authorization to login" box. Type your Frontier GlobalCenter username in the User Name box. Frontier GlobalCenter does not recommend checking the "Remember password between sessions" box. Click on OK. 5) Now go to the Online menu and select Refresh Groups list. A window will pop up asking you about extinct groups. Click on OK. Another window will pop up and ask for a password. Type in your Frontier GlobalCenter password. Free Agent will now download the complete list of newsgroups. As there are over 24,000 of them, this will take a few minutes. 6) You're done. You may read the newsgroups or you may exit Free Agent. Either way, you will not need to download the complete list of newsgroups during future sessions.
