======================================================== Java Runtime Environment Installation (JRE) Ver. 1.1.7 ======================================================== The following instructions show you how to: - install the 1.1.7 version of JAVA on OS/2 from the "StarOffice" CD-ROM and then - connect in StarOffice. ======================================================== Content ======================================================== 1. Prerequisites - System Integrated Browser - Service-Level of the Operating System (OS/2 Warp 4) 2. Netscape Communicator Installation 3. "Feature Install" Installation 4. JAVA-Runtime Environment (Version 1.1.7) Installation 5. JAVA 1.1.7 Update -Installation 6. Enabling Java and JavaScript Functions in StarOffice 7. Solving Problems (IMPORTANT!) - Is the CLASSPTH entry in the CONFIG.SYS correct? - Installing JAVA on a FAT-Partition ======================================================== 1. Prerequisites ======================================================== a) System Integrated Browser The "Feature Install" program (included in the "Staroffice" CD-ROM) requires the Netscape Communicator 4.04. You can get this software with IBM's "Softwarechoice" under the following internet address(Stand: April 1999): http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp/swchoice/ b) Service-Level of the Operating System OS/2 should be brought to the Service Stand of the Fixpak 6, since some basic functionalities were improved. This includes the assurance of the Year 2000 compatibility. You can find the corresponding files and instructions in the internet, under the URL(Stand: April 1999; most updated Fixpak #10): ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/v4warp/ ======================================================== 2. Netscape Communicator Installation ======================================================== PLEASE READ THE ACTUAL README FILE IN THE INSTALLATION SET! In the above described internet address (IBM's Softwarechoice), you'll also receive a self expanding EXE-file. Copy this file in a temporary directory and then execute it in a OS/2 session. After all files are unpacked, start INSTALL.EXE in the temporary directory and follow the instructions from the Installation program. Close your system! Start your Browser once again and make the necessary basic window adjustments for the Browser window. Also make your personal settings. Please continue with section 3. ======================================================== 3. "Feature Install" Installation(Version 1.23) ======================================================== PLEASE READ THE ACTUAL README FILE IN THE INSTALLATION SET! YOU CAN START THE "FEATURE INSTALL" INSTALLATION ONLY IF THE NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR 4.04 HAS BEEN INSTALLED! Create a directory C:\FEATURE\FISETUP in any partition you like (for example C:\) and then go to the "StarOffice CD-ROM and copy all files from the E:\MISC\JAVA\FEATINST directory to the previously created directory (C:\FEATURE\FISETUP). In C:\FEATURE\FISETUP\ start the FISETUP.EXE file. If you've followed these instructions and you've done everything correctly, the following reference will appear: "FISETUP is installed in your system" and then: "The Installation software has been successfully updated in your system". Close your system and continue with section 4. ======================================================== 4. JAVA-Runtime Environment (Version 1.1.7) Installation ======================================================== PLEASE READ THE ACTUAL README FILE IN THE INSTALLATION SET! Create a temporary directory (for example, C:\TEMP). From the "StarOffice" CD-ROM (in our example it is the E:\ CD-ROM drive), copy the self expanding JRE 1.1.7 archive from the E:\MISC\JAVA\JRE117 directory in a temporary directory you like (for example, C:\TEMP) Switch to the temporary directory and extract the archive with the entry from the JAVAINUF.EXE -d (the "-d" is IMPORTANT in order to unpack the sub directories in the archive) into a OS/2 window or full screen session. After all files have been successfully extracted, you will be able to delete the JAVAINUF.EXE file . In the same path start INSTALL.EXE. The installed Browser 1. a) will be started by means of Feature Install. Follow the Installation program instructions and restart your system. You can now delete the temporary files (in our example in C:\TEMP). If you use OS/2 or JAVA Runtime Environment on a FAT file system, please note the instructions on section 7. ======================================================== 5. JAVA 1.1.7 Update -Installation ======================================================== PLEASE READ THE ACTUAL README FILE IN THE INSTALLATION SET! YOU CANNOT RUN ANY JAVA APPLICATION IF YOU EXECUTE THE JAVA 1.1.7-RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT! The JAVA Runtime Environment has in the meantime undergone an update, which you can now install. On the "StarOffice" CD-ROM (in our example, the CD-ROM is situated on the E: drive), under E:\MISC\JRE\JREUPD\, you can find a RUNTIME.EXE file. Copy this file in the partition's main path (!)(Root directory) where you've installed the JAVA Runtime Environment under section 4 (in our example, it was on C:\) Execute RUNTIME.EXE and, when asked if the original files should be replaced, confirm it with Yes. You can now delete the RUNTIME.EXE from the main path (= root directory) and you do not need to restart your computer. With the java -fullversion command, you'll know if you have made everything correctly. This command should give you the following result: JAVA.EXE full version "JDK 1.1.7A IBM build o117-19990303 (JIT enabled: javax)" ===================================================================== 6. Enabling Java and JavaScript Functions in StarOffice ===================================================================== Start StarOffice. On the menu bar, go to Tools- Options and in the Browser group go to the "Other" page, where you can switch on the Java check box. Beside it, on the "Scripting" page, you can also switch on the functionalities for JAVA. ===================================================================== 7. Solving Problems ===================================================================== a) Is the CLASSPTH entry in the CONFIG.SYS correct? The CONFIG.SYS, needed for the Runtime Environment, was incorrectly set in some JAVA 1.1.x installations. This appears if JAVA 1.0.2 (which could have been installed with Warp 4) was previously installed. The following should appear in the CONFIG.SYS, where JAVA 1.1.x was installed. Remember that in this case C: is the partition. SET CLASSPATH=C:\JAVA11\LIB\CLASSES.ZIP;.\. b) FAT-Partition and JAVA Generally, you can use the JAVA Runtime Environment also on FAT. Even if a HPFS formatted partition was offered. However, do not install any samples. Only install the Runtime Environment. ===================================================================== We hope you have a nice time working with JAVA and StarOffice for OS/2.
