Steps to install Sound Blaster Plug n Play driver on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 ============================================================================= WARNING: The PnP driver you are about to install will not work if you have another Creative Labs Sound Blaster sound card installed. This includes any case where you are using the Sound Blaster driver". 1. In \drvlib\pnpisa\ right click on pnpisa.inf and select Install. (if you don't see this file, click View \ Options \ View \ and select "Show all Files" and unselect "Hide extensions for known file types".) 2. Reboot when prompted. 3. Log onto your computer with Administrator privileges. 4. You will see "New Hardware Found" and then be prompted to install drivers for several functions on your card: For Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play (may say Creative SB16PnP): --------------------------------------------------------------- a) Choose "Driver from disk provided by hardware Manufacturer" b) Enter the path name for the SBPnP driver: drvlib\audio\sbpnp\ (e.g. i386 for Intel processor) c) Select OK on the Select Device screen d) Next select Manual Configuration. e) If there are any conflicting devices at the bottom of the screen, resolve them first by selecting basic configuration 0001, then highlight the offending setting in the Resource Settings window. Click on Change Setting, and select a setting that does not conflict with another device. Select OK when finished. Repeat for any settings that show a conflict. If prompted for Creative Labs 3D Stereo Enhancement Technology, select "Windows NT default driver". If prompted for Creative Labs Advanced Wave Effect Synthesis for AWE 32, select "Windows NT default driver". If prompted for IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller, select "Do not install a driver (Windows NT will not prompt you again)". If prompted for Microsoft Joystick Port Enabler, select "Windows NT default driver". 5. Reboot your machine when prompted. 6. Your Sound Blaster card should be working properly at this point. If you need to change the resources that your card is using, open the Multimedia Control Panel applet, select the "Devices" tab, select "Properties" for the Sound Blaster driver, and click on the "Settings" button. This will bring up the same resource picking dialog that was invoked when installing the device. Known issues ============ - If you are having problems settings up your Sound Blaster PnP card and you have a PnP BIOS on your machine, you may have to enable it in the CMOS settings. Consult your machine's manual or the manufacturer to get information on enabling your PnP BIOS. - If your card has an AWE Wave-table Synthesizer it will be detected but there is no PnP AWE driver in this release. - If your card has an IDE Controller it will be detected but there is no PnP IDE driver in this release. - If you installed the legacy (non-PnP) IDE driver by selecting Windows NT default driver you may experience failures loading this driver on your Sound Blaster card. To fix this problem, go to the SCSI Adapters Control Panel applet and select the Drivers Tab. Select the IDE CD-ROM driver that says "(not Started)" next to it, then select Remove. - Due to limitations of the Sound Blaster driver and hardware, certain models of the Sound Blaster AWE 32 PnP card won't be able to play FM Synthesis. No error is recieved for this problem and no sound will be played. This problem will be fixed in subsequent releases. The model numbers that this effects are: CT2760 CT2760A CT3780 CT3960 CT3900 CT391x CT3980 - Only a single installed Sound Blaster audio card is supported. If a previous driver non-PnP audio driver is installed remove your old Sound Blaster driver using the Multimedia Control Panel and reboot before responding to new PnPISA configuration dialogs. Removal of the Sound Blaster device is accomplished through the Device property sheet in the Multimedia Control Panel.
