\\drvlib\print\decmon\readme.txt July 8, 1996 README.TXT ---------- The files located in the \drvlib\print\decmon directory of this Windows NT (TM) distribution are intended to enable you to quickly and simply soft-load and remotely configure Digital's PrintServer 17, PrintServer 17/600, turbo PrintServer 20, and PrintServer 32 plus printers. This README.TXT file answers four questions: 1 - WHAT IS SOFT LOADING AND WHY WOULD I WANT TO DO IT? 2 - HOW DO I CONFIGURE MY NT SYSTEM TO SOFT LOAD? 3 - WHAT ARE THE FILES I FOUND IN \\drvlib\print\decmon USED FOR? 4 - HOW DO I TAILOR THE INSTALLATION OF THESE FILES IN ORDER TO SAVE DISK SPACE? 1-WHAT IS SOFT LOADING AND WHY WOULD I WANT TO DO IT? ------------------------------------------------------ Digital's PrintServer Printers are extremely capable network printers, ranging in speed from 17 PPM to 32 PPM, with monthly duty cycles ranging from 70,000 pages per month to 150,000 pages per month. PrintServer Printers are completely software driven; this makes them extremely flexible and durable resources. When you plug your new PrintServer Printer into your ethernet network and turn it on, it issues a load request to any system or host on the network that is capable of loading it and has been configured to load it. 2-HOW DO I CONFIGURE MY NT SYSTEM TO SOFT LOAD? ----------------------------------------------- In order to make your Windows NT or Windows 95 system capable of soft-loading one or more PrintServer Printers, you must configure Print queue parameters appropriately: -Select or create a PrintServer Printer in the Printers folder. -On Windows NT, select the "Ports" tab On the Properties page for the printer. (The port in use should be highlighted.) Next, choose Configure Port--->Options--->Configure. For Windows 95, you will need to select the "Details" tab, and then Port Settings-->Options--->Configure. -Enter the PrintServer Printer's Hardware address, and select the "Enable Soft Loading & Configuration" feature. -Fill in the rest of the network configuration information on this dialogue and press OK when complete. Note that the Default IP Gateway is the gateway for the printer, which may not be the same as the Gateway for your Windows system -Place the Windows NT installation media in a system drive, and the soft-load files will be copied to your Windows NT or Windows 95 system. You may need to enter the path to the PRNTSRVR.DAT file, for example "Z:\DRVLIB\PRINT\DECMON". -Refer to online help (DECPSMON.HLP) for more information at any time. 3-WHAT ARE THE FILES HERE IN \drvlib\print\decmon USED FOR? ------------------------------------------------------------ The \\drvlib\print\decmon\prntsrvr.dat is a compressed multi-file archive, containing Digital PrintServer Printer soft-loading components. These components are extracted by means of the Printers folder menu options described above, expanded, then placed in the \\win32app\decpsmon directory of your Windows NT or Windows 95 system disk partition. The files take up approximately eight megabytes compressed on the Windows NT distribution in the PRNTSRVR.DAT file format, and they expand to eleven megabytes at installation. These files are binary executable files that run on the PrintServer Printer itself, and text and configuration files that are used by the printer during the loading process. 4-HOW CAN I TAILOR THE INSTALLATION OF THESE FILES TO SAVE DISK SPACE? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The installation will create the following files in the \\win32app\decpsmon directory of your Windows NT or Windows 95 system disk partition: \\win32app\decpsmon\ansi_pro.ps \\win32app\decpsmon\ps_supp.ps \\win32app\decpsmon\startpag.ps \\win32app\decpsmon\cat.dir \\win32app\decpsmon\sys.dir \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\abort \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\accept \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\config \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\contin \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\exit \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\help \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\jobs \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\netstat \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\newfile \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\next \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\permiss \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\privs \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\reboot \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\reconfig \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\reject \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\repeat \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\shorthlp \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\single \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\status \\win32app\decpsmon\cat\versions \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\20video.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.dut \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.eng \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.fre \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.ger \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.ita \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.nor \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.por \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.spa \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1panel.swe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cn1ve.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\cndriver.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\dma.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\dmalev1.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\dmas.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\image.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\lps.sys \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\lps17.sys \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.dut \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.eng \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.fre \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.ger \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.ita \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.nor \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.por \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.spa \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\panel.swe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\pcsi.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\ps.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\ps17.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\ps17min.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\pslev1.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\snmpd.exe \\win32app\decpsmon\sys\xdir.exe To reduce the size required after installing the load files: The files that have extensions .dut, .eng, .fre, .ger, .ita, .nor, .por, .spa, and .swe are language specific front panel files. You can delete any of these that are for a language you will not be choosing. They save you 50K bytes each. The languages supported by these files are as follows: file language extension supported --------- --------- .dut Dutch .eng English .fre French .ger German .ita Italian .nor Norwegian .por Portuguese .spa Spanish .swe Swedish The bulk of your space savings will occur when choosing which of ps.exe (approximately 1 megabyte), ps17.exe (approximately 3 megabytes), and ps17min.exe (approximately 2 megabytes) to delete. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING ELSE! A PrintServer 17 Printer with 8 megabytes of memory requires ps17min.exe but does not need ps17.exe or ps.exe. A PrintServer 17 Printer with 16 megabytes of memory or a PrintServer 17/600 Printer requires ps17.exe but does not need ps17min.exe or ps.exe. A turbo PrintServer 20 Printer requires ps.exe but does not need ps17.exe or ps17min.exe. A PrintServer 32 plus Printer requires ps.exe but does not need ps17.exe or ps17min.exe. When in doubt, DON'T DELETE! If you think you have deleted a file you actually need, you can easily restore or refresh the files at any time by selecting a Printer in the Printers folder that is connected to a PrintServer port, display its property page, and then choosing: Windows NT: "Ports" tab Configure Port Options Configure Install PrintServer Files Windows 95: "Details" tab Port Settings Options Configure Install PrintServer Files
