With the release of Windows NT 4.0, driver support for several storage adapters has been moved from the base operating and into the Windows NT Driver Library (\DRVLIB) included on the CD-ROM. The following drivers are affected by this change: always.sys dtc329x.sys fd7000ex.sys fd8xx.sys mitsumi.sys mkecr5xx.sys slcd32.sys t128.sys t13b.sys tmv1.sys ultra124.sys ultra14f.sys ultra24f.sys wd33c93.sys The following adapters are affected by this change: SCSI ADAPTERS Always IN-2000 Data Technology Corp. 3290 Future Domain TMC-845 Future Domain TMC-850 Future Domain TMC-850M(ER) Future Domain TMC-860 Future Domain TMC-860M Future Domain TMC-885 Future Domain TMC-885M Future Domain TMC-7000EX Maynard 16-bit SCSI Adapter MediaVision Pro Audio Spectrum-16 Trantor T-128 Trantor T-130B UltraStor 14f UltraStor 24f UltraStor 24fa UltraStor 34f DISK CONTROLLERS UltraStor 124f EISA Disk Array Controller NON-SCSI CDROM DRIVES The following Panasonic CD-ROM drives: Creative Labs Sound Blaster CDROM Panasonic CR-521 Panasonic CR-523 Panasonic CR-562 Panasonic CR-563 Using the following interfaces: Panasonic LMEP0084B Sound Blaster Pro Sound Blaster 16 Sound Blaster 16 MultiCD The following Mitsumi CD-ROM drives: Mitsumi CRMC-FX001D Mitsumi CRMC-FX001D1 Mitsumi CRMC-FX001D2 Using the following interfaces: Mitsumi 74-1881A Sound Blaster 16 MultiCD The following Sony CD-ROM drives: Sony CDU31A Sony CDU33A Using the following interfaces: Sony CDB-334 Sound Blaster 16 MultiCD Please see the Windows NT Hardware Compatibility List for additional information on these storage adapters. To use any of the above hardware under Windows NT 4.0 you must first create a driver disk. To do this, copy all of the files from the following directory onto the root of a blank, formatted floppy disk: \drvlib\storage\retired\CPU Where CPU is X86 if you are using a machine with a 486, Pentium, Pentium-Pro or compatible processor, MIPS if your computer uses a MIPS RISC processor, ALPHA if your computer uses a DEC Alpha AXP processor, or PPC if your computer uses an IBM/Motorola PowerPC processor. Label this disk "Retired Drivers disk". To install the driver for your hardware, please follow ONE of the instructions below: -- If you are installing the driver DURING the installation of Windows NT 4.0. (1) Begin the installation of Windows NT 4.0 as normal. - if performing a 3 Floppy/CDROM disk installation, insert the Windows NT Boot Floppy and follow all onscreen disk swapping instructions. - if performing a WINNT /b from DOS or a WINNT32 /b from the network, download all temporary files and reboot your system as prompted. (2) When the monitor background is black and the indicator "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..." appears at the top of the screen, press the F6 key. This disables the disk controller detection sequence of Setup and allows you to install the driver that you desire from the Retired Drivers floppy disk. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you skip this instruction and allow automatic detection to proceed, you will be allowed to install the retired driver for your adapter but will not be allowed to use any of the devices attached to it until after the completion of Setup and booting into Windows NT 4.0. (3) During Setup, the monitor background will change to blue. Setup will pause and display a prompt screen starting with the following sentence: "Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter." Press the S key to Select your adapter's driver, then highlight the word "Other" and press . The screen will prompt you to "...insert the manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk...", insert your Retired Drivers floppy disk into Drive A: and press . (4) From the list of Retired Drivers presented, highlight the one for your adapter and press . From this point forward, Setup should proceed, follow all floppy disk swapping instructions as prompted. When you are prompted to insert the "Windows NT Driver Library Disk", insert the Retired Drivers floppy disk. Setup will now be able to use any hard drives and CDROM drives attached to your adapter for completing the installation of Windows NT 4.0. -- If you are installing the driver AFTER the installation of Windows NT 4.0. (1) After installing the properly configured adapter in your machine, boot into Windows NT 4.0 as normal. (2) From the Start button, open Control Panels, then open the SCSI Adapters applet. (3) Select the Drivers tab, then click the Add button. (4) Click the Have Disk button, insert the Retired Drivers floppy disk into Drive A: and click OK. (5) Highlight the desired driver from the list presented and click OK, then click Continue to load the driver. (6) You need to reboot your Windows NT 4.0 system to activate the driver. Click the Restart Computer button to shut down and restart. -- If you are upgrading Windows NT 3.51 to Windows NT 4.0. (1) Prior to beginning the installation of Windows NT 4.0, start up and log into your Windows NT 3.51 system. Open the MAIN icon, then select the Windows NT Setup icon and open it. Select the OPTIONS menu item, then select Add/Remove SCSI Adapters from the pull-down menu. Check to see what SCSI adapters are installed in your system and make a note of their names. You'll need this information during your upgrade to Windows NT 4.0. (2) Begin the Windows NT 4.0 Upgrade installation as normal. (3) When the monitor background is black and the indicator "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..." appears at the top of the screen, press the F6 key. This disables the disk controller detection sequence of Setup and allows you to install the driver that you desire from the Retired Drivers floppy disk. IMPORTANT NOTE: This step disables ALL SCSI driver detection. If you have more than one SCSI adapter installed in your system, ALL of the SCSI drivers will have to be installed manually. If you skip this instruction and allow automatic detection to proceed, you will be allowed to install the retired driver for your adapter but will not be allowed to use any of the devices attached to it until after the completion of Setup and booting into Windows NT 4.0. We recommend that all SCSI drivers be installed manually since the omission of any required drivers may leave your system in an unstable, unbootable condition. (4) During Setup, the monitor background will change to blue. (5) From the list of Retired Drivers presented, highlight the one for your adapter (consult the note you made earlier from your 3.51 system) and press . After this, you will be presented with the Selection screen again. If you have additional SCSI adapters installed in your system, press S again and select the other SCSI drivers from the list provided. (Again, consult your note from earlier for the name of any remaining SCSI drivers to be installed.) Drivers supported by Windows NT 4.0 will be loaded from the CDROM drive. From this point forward, Setup should proceed, follow all floppy disk swapping instructions as prompted. When you are prompted to insert the "Windows NT Driver Library Disk", insert the Retired Drivers floppy disk. Setup will now be able to use any hard drives and CDROM drives attached to your adapter(s) for completing the upgrade installation of Windows NT 4.0.
