Norton System Center can distribute Norton 2000 to any system on most
Microsoft and non-Microsoft networks. There are two ways to administer Norton 2000 on target machines. Administrators
must decide which method best fits their needs:
- With a Microsoft SQL Server and Norton System Center, administrators
can:
- Distribute the files needed to run a Norton 2000 scan on the target
machines
- Scan target machines for potential year 2000 problems
- Silently remove the files from the target machines
- Collate the reports in the SQL database using the Norton 2000 Database
program
- Using Norton System Center, administrators can distribute and install
the standalone version of Norton 2000 on target machines. The end users run the program and manually send reports
back to administrators.
Norton 2000 Database network requirements
Norton 2000 Database requires the following software on the server:
- Miscrosoft SQL Server 6.5 or 7.0
- Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0
- Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver 3.50 or later
Note: Windows
NT Server 4.0 with SP3 is required to run Microsoft SQL Server 6.5. Windows NT Server 4.0 with SP4 is required
to run Microsoft SQL Server 7.0
Appendix C of the Norton 2000 Implementation Guide contains additional information
on setting up both versions of Microsoft SQL Server. It also contains technical information on setting up Norton
2000 Database.
Using Norton System Center to distribute Norton 2000
- Install Norton Agent on all target machines. Norton Agent is a small memory-resident program that resides on target machines, waiting
to accept instructions from Norton System Center. It is silent and invisible to end users both during installation
and while it is running.
- Decide which Norton 2000 package to use.
- If you have an SQL server, and want the automated functionality of Norton 2000
Database, use the Run Norton 2000 Agent
package. This package installs Norton 2000 on target machines and sets up the communication between the individual
machines on the network and Norton 2000 Database. It silently installs the files needed to scan target machines,
performs the scan, copies the scan log files back to the server, and then deletes the files from the target machines.
You must modify this package before distributing it.
- To distribute the standalone version of Norton 2000, use the Install Norton 2000 Corporate Edition package. It installs
Norton 2000 on the target machines, allowing them to run Norton 2000 themselves. You do not need to modify this
package before distributing it.
- You can also create
your own packages to scan target machines. Use this option if
you want to distribute the necessary files to the target machines, run the scans, and leave the files on the target
machines for future scans. This is more network-efficient because you do not have to transfer the temporary files
when running multiple scans.
- Create a job specifying
the package to distribute to the target machines.
- Run the job. Running
the job distributes the package to the target machines, and installs or runs the software in the package on each
targeted machine.
