Distributing Norton 2000 scan files

This process requires you to set up and run two packages in Norton System Center. The first package distributes the files needed to run the Norton 2000 scan on the target machines. The second package actually performs the scans. This method of running Norton 2000 leaves the scan files on the target machines, rather than deleting them once the scan is finished. If you want to delete the files when finished, use the Run Norton 2000 Agent package.

To create a new package to distribute Norton 2000 scan files
  1. From the Norton System Center Console, right-click Packages in the control tree. Select New and click Package.
  2. In the Package Name box, enter a name like "Install Norton 2000 scan files."
  3. Under Package Type, select Distribute Files.
  4. Enter the path of the directory where these files will be stored on the target machines. If you have a situation where some machines need a different pathname, create a separate package for them using the different pathname in this field. For example, using c:\ny2k installs the scan files in the c:\ny2k directory on all target machines.
  5. Modify the Configuration 1 tab at the bottom of the window:
  6. When you click OK, the new package appears in the package list.
To create a new package to run the Norton 2000 scan files
  1. Distribute the Norton 2000 scan files. To do this, create a job using the new package you created. Then run the job.
  2. From the Norton System Center Console, right-click Packages in the control tree. Select New and click Package.
  3. In the Package Name box, enter a name like "Run Norton 2000 scans."
  4. Under Package Type, select Run Program From File Set. Enter the pathname you created above in step 4 when you created the new package to distribute Norton 2000 scan files. At the end of the pathname, add the filename N2kagent.exe and parameters as needed. For example, if you used c:\ny2k for the pathname, enter c:\ny2k\N2kagent and whatever parameters you need.

The command-line scanner accepts the following parameters:

N2kagent /x /a /b /i <filename.era> /e "%t\%m"
/a scans the machine's applications
/b scans the machine's BIOS
/x scans the machine's data
/i creates a log file to display the more serious year 2000 issues from within the Norton System Center Console
filename.era specifies a certain profile to use when scanning. See Chapter 5 in the manual for more information on working with profiles.

The /e switch tells Norton 2000 where to store the export files from the target machines. This switch uses the following parameters in quotation marks:
"%t" uses the server's temporary directory to store the export files from target machines.
"%m" creates a subdirectory on the server based on the machine name. This directory stores the export files for that machine. When used with the %t switch, the subdirectory is created under the system's \temp directory.
"%u" is the same as the %m switch, but it creates subdirectories based on the users' login names. When used with the %t switch, the subdirectory is created under the system's \temp directory.
