For Windows NT machines, you can distribute and install Norton Agent
on target machines with the first job you distribute. Because Norton Agent runs as a service on the target machines,
it must be installed under administrator privileges. For the automatic Norton Agent distribution to be successful,
one of two conditions must be met:
- NT Domain: The
network is configured with at least one domain and you are logged on to the Norton System Center machine with domain
administrator privileges.
- NT Workgroup: All
target machines have an administrator account with the same username and password. You’re logged on to the Norton
System Center machine with that same username and password.
If neither of these conditions is met, you must manually install Norton
Agent on the target machines.
To install Norton Agent for Windows NT:
Do one of the following:
- Copy the Norton Agent install program and its associated files from
the appropriate NSC\Agents folder (Intel or Alpha) to a shared network folder and instruct end users to run the
Norton Agent install program from the network folder under their local administrator accounts.
- If the target machines use different usernames and passwords, but are
run with administrator privileges, you can place the Norton Agent install program and its associated files in a
network folder and run the Norton Agent install program from a login script or batch file. The Norton Agent install
program checks whether the Norton Agent is already running and only installs if necessary.
- Manually install Norton Agent on the target machines. To do this, copy
the Norton Agent install program and its associated files to a floppy disk and run AGNTINST.EXE from the floppy
on each target machine.
After Norton Agent is installed, it is runs automatically every time
the target machine is started.
