Creative PnP Configuration Manager Readme File ============================================== This file contains important information regarding the installation of Creative Plug and Play (PnP) cards using Creative PnP Configuration Manager (CTCM) and Creative PnP Configuration Utility (CTCU). Please read all the sections here before you proceed to install this configuration driver and utility set. The information here is organized into the following sections: 1. Installing CTCM in Windows 95 2. Configuring Your Card in Windows 95 DOS Mode 3. If You Have Another Configuration Manager 4. If You Have Legacy Cards In Your System 5. Incompatibility of CTCU.EXE with SHARE.EXE NOTE: For more information on using CTCU or CTCM, please refer to the sections "Using CTCM" and "Using CTCU" in your manual or "DOS/Windows 3.x & Windows 95 DOS Mode Plug and Play Installation Tips" leaflet. 1. INSTALLING CTCM IN WINDOWS 95 If you have just upgraded your operating system from DOS/Windows 3.x to Windows 95, but do not have any Windows 95 software for your Creative PnP cards, follow the steps below to configure these cards properly: 1. Use your Windows Explorer to look for a CTCM.INF file in your CTCM directory. 2. Right-click on the file and select Install from the shortcut menu that appears. This program will copy some drivers into your system to configure your PnP cards in MS-DOS Mode. It will also convert into remarks all CTCM/CTCU statements in your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files as Windows 95 will take care of all PnP configurations in its Windows and DOS box environments. 2. CONFIGURING YOUR CARD IN WINDOWS 95 DOS MODE To enable your PnP card to work properly in a Windows 95 DOS Mode session, you need to do two things: a. First, make sure that this card is configured properly in the windows environment of Windows 95. b. Next, run CTCM in a Windows 95 DOS Mode session. CTCM will configure your card according to the settings given in Windows 95. To check whether your PnP card has been properly configured in Windows 95: a. Click the "My Computer" icon in Windows 95 with your right mouse button. A shortcut menu will appear. b. Choose the "Properties" option. The Properties dialog box will appear. c. Select the "Device Manager" tabbed page. A list of the devices in your system will appear. d. Select the right device type, e.g., "Sound, video and game controllers", "Modem", or "CD-ROM controllers". A list of all the devices in that category will appear. Your PnP card is not properly configured if you see a yellow "!" sign on the card's icon. To reconfigure your PnP card in Windows 95, if you see a yellow "!" sign on your PnP card icon: a. Click that device and check its device status to find out what went wrong. Solve the problem and then restart your computer in Windows 95 to reconfigure your card. 3. IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER CONFIGURATION MANAGER CTCM can work with or without another configuration manager in your system. However, if you already have a different configuration manager installed in your system, you should check your CONFIG.SYS file after installing CTCM. Please make sure that the statement which invokes CTCM is placed after the statement that calls the other configuration manager. 4. IF YOU HAVE LEGACY CARDS IN YOUR SYSTEM CTCM configures Creative PnP cards only. If you have legacy cards in your system, you need to run CTCU first, to inform CTCM about the hardware resources used by these legacy cards. After that, you can run CTCM to configure your Creative PnP card. Alternatively, if you do not know your legacy cards' settings, you can use CTCU to change the settings of your PnP card. Then run CTCM and test whether your card works properly. This is a trial-and-error method since CTCM will not be "informed" about the resources that have been reserved by your legacy cards. You may need to try different combinations of settings before you can configure your PnP cards successfully, without any hardware conflicts with existing cards. 5. INCOMPATIBILITY OF CTCU.EXE WITH SHARE.EXE If you load SHARE.EXE on your machine and then run CTCU.EXE in Full-Screen mode, CTCU will not load successfully. The reason for this is that the SHARE.EXE file has been opened by the Overlay Manager and because of sharing restrictions, the Resource Manager will fail when it tries to load CTCU.EXE. If SHARE.EXE is loaded, you will have to unload SHARE.EXE before running CTCU.EXE in Full-Screen mode. To do this you will need to comment out the line that loads SHARE.EXE in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and then reboot the machine. If you had run SHARE.EXE from the command line and not from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you do not need to change the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, but you still need to reboot.
