ABAQUS installation procedure
========================

Licensing for ABAQUS has changed for Version 6.3. The lan license manager
has been replaced with FLEXlm from GLOBEtrotter Software, Inc. Therefore, the
license key and license server that you used for previous versions of ABAQUS
are incompatible with Version 6.3.

Before starting the ABAQUS installation procedure, check the software and disk
requirements specified in Appendix B, "System requirements." The disk space
will be charged against the account of the owner of the ABAQUS installation
directory. If your site has project accounts, you may want to use such an
account for the ABAQUS files.

Note: If you will run ABAQUS/CAE or ABAQUS/Viewer on a Windows
platform, you must install Exceed and Exceed 3D before installing ABAQUS.
In addition, you must configure Exceed as described in ``Configuring Exceed
for ABAQUS/CAE and ABAQUS/Viewer'' (see the ABAQUS Site Guide).

Before attempting to install ABAQUS, you must have one of the following:

     * An ABAQUS Version 6.3 license file.

     * An ABAQUS Version 6.3 network license server installed and running on your
       network.

The license file or network license server must be valid for the current version.
A new license is required for each new official release, and this license enables
subsequent maintenance releases to run. For example, a new license is required for
Version 6.3-1, and this license can be used to run all Version 6.3 maintenance
releases.

To request an ABAQUS license, refer to "Obtaining ABAQUS Host ID Information for
Licensing" listed under Technical Support->Systems Information on the ABAQUS
Home Page (http://www.abaqus.com).

========================
Installation guidelines
========================

This section describes the guidelines for installing ABAQUS. The installation
instructions are discussed in Installing ABAQUS from a locally mounted CD-ROM
and Installing ABAQUS from a remotely mounted CD-ROM. It is recommended
that you review the guidelines in this section before installing ABAQUS. Default
values are given whenever possible; it is highly recommended that you use
the defaults unless you have good reason to specify an alternative.

There are three selections available when you run the ABAQUS installation
procedure:

     1. License installation.

     2. Complete ABAQUS product installation.

     3. Online documentation installation only.

The ABAQUS directory structure is designed to facilitate multiple versions of
ABAQUS starting with Version 6.1. All versions of ABAQUS and ABAQUS licensing
should be installed in the same parent directory to take full advantage of this
directory structure.

----------------------------------------------
License installation guidelines
----------------------------------------------

This section describes license installation information for initial installations
and existing license servers.

Initial ABAQUS license installation
----------------------------------------------
If you are installing ABAQUS for the first time on your network, you must install
licensing first. Typically, the license server is installed on only one computer
on your network and is accessed by all the computers on which ABAQUS is run.

If you are using redundant network license servers (see "Network licensing"
Section D.1 in the ABAQUS Site Guide), you must repeat the network license
installation on each of the redundant server hosts. Because the redundant license
servers must be started simultaneously (within one minute of each other) in their
initial startup, the installation procedure installs only the license file and
utilities for redundant license servers but will not start the license server. You
must start each server manually using the FLEXlm license manager daemon lmgrd
(see "FLEXlm license manager daemon lmgrd," Section D.2 in the ABAQUS Site Guide).

To install a license and server, you must have a license file saved on the computer
on which you are installing the license server. The license file is the file
containing the Version 6.3 license that was attached to the e-mail message sent by
HKS ("From: abaqus-keys@abaqus.com; Subject: LK: site ID ABAQUS V6.3 License
File," where site ID is the customer number that HKS assigned to your site) or from
your local office or representative. There is no need to edit any of the information
contained in the e-mail message or the attached file.

If you are unable to start the license server using the installation procedure,
ensure that the license utilities are installed and start the license server
manually using the FLEXlm license manager daemon lmgrd (see "FLEXlm license
manager daemon lmgrd," Section D.2 in the ABAQUS Site Guide).

When executing the installation procedure, a browse function is provided for prompts
where you are requested to specify a directory or file location. You will be prompted
for the following information:

     * The location of the license file. The installation procedure will save the license
file in the License directory using the default name abaquslm.lic. This default
name can be changed to any desired name.

     * The installation directory specifies the ABAQUS parent directory, which is the
location where the licensing directory will be stored. The default location for the
licensing directory is $cwd/License on UNIX platforms and C:\Abaqus\license
        on Windows platforms. The path to the licensing directory can be user-defined;
but the actual name of the licensing directory, License (UNIX) or license
        (Windows), cannot be changed.

NOTE: On UNIX platforms the license server is started by the installation
procedure, but you should include the command to restart the license server in
the system startup file for the server host. The command to restart the license
server is written to the licinstall_details.log file in the License/installation_info
directory. Contact your system administrator or platform vendor for information
on the system startup file for your computer. On Windows platforms you must
reboot the license server host following server installation.

After the license server is installed and running, install ABAQUS products on each
computer that you will use to run the products. You need not install ABAQUS
products on the license server host unless you will run ABAQUS on that computer.
For more information, see ``Complete ABAQUS product installation.''

Updating an existing license server
----------------------------------------------

Follow the instructions in this section if any of the following conditions are true:

     * An ABAQUSLM vendor daemon is already installed and running on your local
computer, and you need to upgrade your license server.

     * The FLEXlm license manager daemon is already installed and running on your
local computer, and you want to add ABAQUS licensing.

     * You need to update an existing license file.

If there is an active license server running on the computer and you attempt to install
ABAQUS licensing, the license installation procedure will install only the licensing
utilities and will not attempt to start the license server.

Check the version number of the existing FLEXlm license server if FLEXlm network
licensing is already installed on your local computer. You can use the FLEXlm utility
lmver (see The FLEXlm End User's Guide listed under "Technical Support ->
Licensing" on the ABAQUS Home Page) or lmstat (see lmstat, Section D.3.5 in the
ABAQUS Site Guide) to check the version number of the license server. ABAQUS
licensing requires FLEXlm Version 8.2; the license server must be updated if it is an
earlier version.

To update the license server, you must first stop the existing FLEXlm license
manager daemon lmgrd, which will automatically stop the ABAQUSLM vendor daemon
(if it exists). Then, you can install the license utilities and license file and restart the
license server. Stopping and restarting must be performed using the FLEXlm utility lmdown
(see lmdown, Section D.3.2 in the ABAQUS Site Guide) and the FLEXlm license manager
daemon lmgrd (see FLEXlm license manager daemon lmgrd, Section D.2 in the ABAQUS
Site Guide), respectively. Stopping the server may cause a brief interruption to any FLEXlm
clients that are running, but these clients will reconnect to the license server shortly
after it is restarted.

NOTE: To stop and restart the license server on UNIX platforms, you must be the
owner of the server. On Windows platforms, installation and all modifications to
the license server must be performed by the Administrator.

To update the license file for an existing license server, you do not need to stop and
restart the FLEXlm license server. If your ABAQUS license file is independent of
other products using FLEXlm, you can replace the current license file with the new
one. You must edit the new license file and replace the string
<Insert_server_HOSTNAME_here> with the actual hostname of your computer.
If you are using the Multiple License File capability in FLEXlm, replace the ABAQUS
licensing information in the license file with the updated information. In both cases
you must force the license server to reread the license file with the FLEXlm utility
lmreread. For more information, see The FLEXlm End User's Guide.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Complete ABAQUS product installation guidelines
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The installation procedure will prompt you for the license server(s) on your network
and determine the ABAQUS products you are licensed to run. Licensing must be
installed and running, and you must know the name of at least one active ABAQUS
license server to perform the complete ABAQUS product installation. All ABAQUS
products, online documentation, and sample problems are installed as part of the
complete ABAQUS product installation. Online documentation can be installed
separately (see Online documentation installation guidelines). ABAQUS
environment settings are defined appropriately for the parameters defined in your
ABAQUS license. Verification of licensed products is performed automatically during
the installation. When the installation is complete, a record of the installation and a
listing of the licensed products is written to a file called installdetails.log in the
installation_info directory (see Appendix C, ABAQUS release directories and files
in the ABAQUS Site Guide). The commands to run ABAQUS are provided at the end
of the installation procedure.

NOTE: If you will run ABAQUS/CAE or ABAQUS/Viewer on a Windows platform,
you must install Exceed and Exceed 3D before installing ABAQUS. In addition,
you must configure Exceed as described in Configuring Exceed for
     ABAQUS/CAE and ABAQUS/Viewer.

No special user privilege is required to install ABAQUS products on UNIX platforms
or on Windows NT. However, you must have Administrator privilege to install
ABAQUS on Windows 2000 and Windows XP platforms. You must have write
permission in the ABAQUS parent directory. On Windows platforms ABAQUS
shortcuts are added to all user profiles when the product installation is performed by
the Administrator; otherwise, only the profile of the user performing the installation is
updated.

A browse function is provided for prompts where you are requested to specify a
directory or file location. You will be prompted for the following information:

     * The network license server host name or IP address: enter the appropriate
license server host. If a set of redundant servers should be used, enter the host
names or IP addresses of the redundant servers separated by colons.

     * The installation directory: specify the ABAQUS parent directory (referred to as
abaqus_dir), which is the location where all ABAQUS versions will be stored.
The default location is $cwd on UNIX platforms and C:\Abaqus on Windows
platforms. You should NOT install ABAQUS in a directory that indicates a
specific version number; the version-specific directory will be created by the
installation procedure. For example, all files needed to run Version 6.3-1 will be
       installed in abaqus_dir/6.3-1.

     * The location of the ABAQUS working directory (Windows only): specify the
location where user files created during ABAQUS interactive sessions are
stored and the home directory for the ABAQUS command window. The default
location is C:\temp. (This can be changed by users later; see Common
customizations on Windows platforms, Section 5.1.2. in the ABAQUS Site
       Guide).

Each subsequent version should be installed in the same ABAQUS parent directory.
The installation procedure will create a new subdirectory for each new version
installed.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Online documentation installation guidelines
----------------------------------------------------------------

ABAQUS online documentation is available in two forms:

     * "electronic books* installed through the ABAQUS installation procedure and
        viewed through a proprietary browser (DynaText);

	and

     * HTML documentation supplied on a separate CD, installed separately, and
       viewed through a web browser.

This section refers only to the electronic books installed through the ABAQUS
installation procedure; see ABAQUS HTML documentation for information on the
HTML documentation.

You can install the ABAQUS online documentation independent of the complete
ABAQUS product installation by selecting the third choice when you run the
installation procedure. There are no restrictions, other than available disk space,
to installing ABAQUS online documentation on your computer. Neither ABAQUS
licensing nor ABAQUS products need to be installed for online documentation. No
special user privilege is required to install ABAQUS online documentation. However,
you must have write permission in the directory where the online documentation is
installed.

A browse function is provided for prompts where you are requested to specify a
directory or file location. You will be prompted for the following information:

     * The installation directory: specify the ABAQUS parent directory (referred to as
abaqus_dir), which is the location where all ABAQUS versions will be stored.
The default location is $cwd on UNIX platforms and C:\Abaqus on Windows
platforms. You should NOT install ABAQUS in a directory that indicates a
specific version number; the version-specific directory will be created by the
installation procedure. For example, all files needed to run Version 6.3-1 will be
       installed in abaqus_dir/6.3-1.

NOTE: The ABAQUS online documentation installation creates several additional
ABAQUS executables. Deleting any of these executables may corrupt your
     installation.

See Execution procedure for online documentation, Section 3.2.4 of the
ABAQUS/Standard User's Manual and the ABAQUS/Explicit User's Manual, for
information on accessing and using the ABAQUS online documentation.

======================================
Installing ABAQUS from a locally mounted CD-ROM
======================================

This procedure allows you to perform the ABAQUS installation options on a
computer that has a locally mounted CD-ROM device (if no local CD-ROM device is
available, a remote device can be used; see Installing ABAQUS from a remotely
mounted CD-ROM, Section 2.3). Check the CD-ROM mount command for the
platform on which you are installing ABAQUS. These commands can be found in
Software, Section B.1, or on the ABAQUS Home Page, listed under "Technical
Support -> Systems Information for ABAQUS Version 6.3."

This section lists the steps required for installing ABAQUS locally. Once you have
completed the following steps, please proceed to Commands to run ABAQUS.

1. If you are installing ABAQUS for the first time, create the ABAQUS parent
directory.

2. Insert the appropriate CD-ROM in the drive, and issue the CD-ROM mount
command (as required).

3. On UNIX platforms, type the following command:

    % <cdrom_dir>/setup

where <cdrom _dir> is the CD-ROM mount directory. If prompted to select a platform,
select the platform on which you are installing ABAQUS.

On Windows platforms:

If autoplay is enabled, the installation procedure starts. If autoplay is not enabled,

     a. From the taskbar, click Start. A menu appears.

     b. From the menu, select Programs -> Windows Explorer. The Exploring window
        appears.

     c. In the Exploring window, click the CD-ROM drive icon.

     d. Double-click the Setup application icon (file extension .exe; the icon of the
         computer).

4. Follow the instructions given in the dialog boxes for installing ABAQUS.

The installation finishes with a dialog box containing a message that the installation
is complete. If you do not see this message, you should check the "installation_info"
directory for the version you installed for specific details.

5. Eject the CD-ROM from the drive.

================================================
Installing ABAQUS from a remotely mounted CD-ROM
================================================

This procedure allows you to unload the installation files from a remote CD-ROM
device and to install ABAQUS on a computer without a locally mounted CD-ROM
device (if a local CD-ROM device is available, see Installing ABAQUS from a locally
mounted CD-ROM). Check the CD-ROM mount command for the platform on which
the CD-ROM device exists. These commands can be found in Software, Section
B.1 in the ABAQUS Site Guide or on the ABAQUS Home Page, listed under
"Technical Support -> Systems Information" for ABAQUS Version 6.3.

This section lists the steps required for installing ABAQUS remotely. Once you have
completed the following steps, please proceed to Commands to run ABAQUS

On Windows platforms
----------------------------------
You can install ABAQUS from a remote CD-ROM device if it has been defined as a
share. Setting up the CD-ROM device as a share must be performed by a user with
Administrator privilege. To install ABAQUS from a shared remote CD-ROM, connect
to that drive and perform the installation as if the drive were local (see "Installing
ABAQUS from a locally mounted CD-ROM").

On UNIX platforms
----------------------------------
1. Set your current directory to the location where you want to unload the installation
files. This directory can be on the remote computer where the CD-ROM device
exists, but it saves a step if it is located on the local computer where you are
installing ABAQUS (in this case you are writing files across the network).

2. Enter the command

     % /CDROM/remote

If prompted to select a platform, select the platform on which you are installing
ABAQUS. The remote install procedure creates a directory called remote in the
current directory and unloads all the files required for installing ABAQUS.

3. If your current directory is set to a location on the remote computer, you must
copy the entire remote directory to the local computer where you will install
ABAQUS.

4. Set your current directory to the ABAQUS parent directory on your local computer,
and start the installation by entering the command

     % <fullpath>/remote/setup

where <fullpath> is the fully qualified path to the remote directory created in Step 2
or 3. If prompted to select a platform, select the platform on which you are installing
ABAQUS.

5. Follow the instructions given in the dialog boxes for installing ABAQUS. The
installation finishes with a dialog box containing a message that the installation is
complete. If you do not see this message, you should check the installation_info
directory for the version you installed for specific details.

6. Following successful installation, delete the remote directory where you unloaded
the installation files (which may exist on both the local and remote computer).

7. Unmount the CD from the remote CD-ROM device (if necessary), and remove the
CD.

============================================
Configuring Exceed for ABAQUS/CAE and ABAQUS/Viewer
============================================

After you install Exceed and Exceed 3D and before you run ABAQUS/CAE and
ABAQUS/Viewer on Windows platforms, you must configure Exceed to enable the
GLX extension. In addition, it is recommended that you use the following setup
procedures to configure Exceed:

Enabling the GLX extension:

1. Select "Start -> Programs -> Hummingbird Connectivity V7.1 -> Exceed ->
Xconfig (Exceed Version 7.1)."

NOTE: For Exceed Version 6.2, select Start -> Programs -> Exceed -> Xconfig.

2. From the Xconfig dialog box that appears, double-click Protocol.

3. From the buttons on the right edge of the "Protocol" dialog box that appears, click
"Extensions."

4. From the list on the left side of the Protocol Extensions dialog box that appears,
select GLX (make sure it stays enabled) and click "Configure."

5. In the Configure GLX dialog box that appears, make sure all four options (Direct
Rendering, Hardware Acceleration, One Visual Per Pixel Format, and Overlay
Support) are toggled on.

6. Click OK in each dialog box to save your settings and to close the dialog box.

7. When prompted, select Yes to allow the server to be reset and leave the Xconfig
dialog box open for the next procedure.

If graphics display problems occur when you run ABAQUS/CAE or ABAQUS/Viewer,
repeat this procedure and toggle off the setting Hardware Acceleration.

Tuning:

1. In the Xconfig dialog box, double-click Performance.

2. In the Performance dialog box, click Tune.

3. In the Xperf dialog box, click Run All.

Xperf draws all of the test objects and displays the test results. (For more
information on Xperf, click Help in the Xperf dialog box.)

4. Click OK in the Xperf dialog box to optimize performance based on the test results.

5. Click OK in the Performance dialog box, but leave the Xconfig dialog box open for
the next procedure.

Eliminating the display of the warning message when you use the window manager
to close a dialog box:

1. In the Xconfig dialog box that appears, double-click Screen Definition.

2. In the dialog box that appears, select Common Settings and toggle off Close
Warning On Exit.

3. Click OK to save your settings and to close the Screen dialog box.

4. Close the Xconfig dialog box.

=====================
Commands to run ABAQUS
=====================

The installation procedure creates a unique command for each version of ABAQUS. This
command is written in the Commands directory within the ABAQUS parent directory
(abaqus_dir). For example, the command to run Version 6.3-1 is abq631. Similarly, the
command to run Version 6.3-3 is abq633. The installation procedure also creates a link
called abaqus to the command for the latest version of ABAQUS installed. For a list of
all ABAQUS command line options, type abq631 help. For a detailed description of ABAQUS
command line options, see Chapter 3, "Execution Procedures," of the ABAQUS/Standard
User's Manual and the ABAQUS/Explicit User's Manual.

On Windows platforms the Commands directory path is added automatically to the user's
path during installation. If the installation is performed by a user with Administrator
privilege, all users' paths are updated. If a user without Administrator privilege installs
ABAQUS, only that user's path is updated.

On UNIX platforms the Commands directory should be added to each user's path. Alternately,
a link for each ABAQUS version can be defined at the system level or for each user,
pointing to the appropriate command in the Commands directory. These methods are described
below.

To define a command to run ABAQUS on UNIX platforms, choose one of the following methods:

     * Create a soft link with the execution procedure (abaqus_dir/Commands/abqversion)
in a directory that is in all users' paths. (You must create this link from an
appropriately privileged account.) For example, to create the link for
Version 6.3-1 in /usr/bin, you would type the following:

       % cd /usr/bin
       % ln -s abaqus_dir/Commands/abq631 abq631

This method is recommended because the command that you choose will be available to
all users without requiring modification of each user's .cshrc or .profile files.

     * Users can add abaqus_dir/Commands to their own paths in their .cshrc or .profile
files. The command to add the Commands directory to a user's path is as follows:

       % set path = ( $path <abaqus_dir>/Commands )

     * csh users can provide an alias to run <abaqus_dir>/Commands/abqversion. This method
supports the use of a different command (such as "myabq631" in the example below) to
       run ABAQUS.

       % alias myabq631 <abaqus_dir>/Commands/abq631

=========================
ABAQUS HTML documentation
=========================

ABAQUS HTML documentation allows you to view ABAQUS documentation through a web browser.
An ABAQUS installation is not required on your computer to install the ABAQUS HTML
documentation. HTML documentation is available in addition to the online documentation
installed through the ABAQUS installation procedure and viewed through a proprietary
browser. Installing the HTML documentation is a separate operation from installing ABAQUS.
If ABAQUS Version 6.3 is installed on your computer, you should install the HTML
documentation in the same parent directory as the ABAQUS installation. The installation
procedure for HTML documentation runs only on platforms supported for Version 6.3 and
creates a new subdirectory called "V6.3_HTMLdocs" in the installation directory.

No search functionality is provided within the HTML documentation. You can use the
browser's limited search functionality to search the current section. You must use
Netscape Version 6 (or the latest version available on your platform) or Internet
Explorer Version 5 for adequate performance in displaying the HTML documentation. Disk
space requirements for the HTML documentation are approximately 750 MB on UNIX platforms
and 500 MB on Windows platforms.

---------------------------------------------------------
Installing HTML documentation on supported UNIX platforms
---------------------------------------------------------

1. Insert the CD-ROM called Version 6.3 HTML Documentation in a locally mounted CD device.

2. Set your directory to the desired installation directory.

3. Type the command

% /CDROM/unix/setup

4. Respond to the displayed prompts. The installation may take 30 minutes or more to
complete.

5. Unmount and remove the CD-ROM.

---------------------------------------------------------
Installing HTML documentation on Windows platforms
---------------------------------------------------------

1. Insert the CD-ROM called Version 6.3 HTML Documentation in a locally mounted CD device.

2. Use Windows Explorer to select and run

   CD-ROM drive\nti\setup.exe

3. Respond to the displayed prompts. The installation may take 30 minutes or more to
complete.

4. Eject and remove the CD-ROM.

---------------------------------------------------------
Unloading HTML documentation on any UNIX platform
---------------------------------------------------------

This procedure can be used to unload the HTML documentation files on any UNIX platform,
regardless of whether it is supported with ABAQUS Version 6.3. The HTML documentation
files can be unloaded in any directory that can be accessed by your browser.

1. Insert the CD-ROM called Version 6.3 HTML Documentation in a locally mounted CD device.

2. Copy /CDROM/unix/v63htmldocs.tar.z to <install_dir>/v63htmldocs.tar.Z, where
<install_dir> is a directory on your computer where you have write permission.

3. Uncompress the file using the command

% uncompress v63htmldocs.tar.Z

4. Expand the .tar file using the command

% tar -xvf v63htmldocs.tar

A new subdirectory called V6.3_HTMLdocs is created in the installation directory.

5. Unmount and remove the CD-ROM.

---------------------------------------------------------
Accessing HTML documentation
---------------------------------------------------------

1. Start the web browser on your computer.

2. Enter the full path to the index.html file in the browsers address box

% <abaqus_dir>/V6.3_HTMLdocs/index.html

where <abaqus_dir> is the ABAQUS parent directory.

3. Save the location of the Version 6.3 HTML documentation as a bookmark.

On Windows platforms you can also access the HTML documentation from the Start menu.

---------------------------------------------------------
Removing HTML documentation
---------------------------------------------------------

On UNIX platforms:
----------------------------
The ABAQUS HTML documentation can be removed safely by simply deleting the version-specific
directory and all subordinate files. Your user account must have permission to delete the
ABAQUS HTML documentation directory.

1. Type the command

% cd <abaqus_dir>

where <abaqus_dir> is the ABAQUS parent directory.

2. Remove the documentation directory by typing

% rm -rf V6.3_HTMLdocs

On Windows platforms:
-----------------------------------
The ABAQUS HTML documentation should be removed by using the uninstall function from the
ABAQUS V6.3 HTML Documentation menu. Your user account must have permission to delete the
ABAQUS HTML documentation directory.

1. From the task bar, select the Start button. A menu appears.

2. From the menu, select Programs -> ABAQUS V6.3 HTML Documentation -> Uninstall HTML
Documentation.

===================
Uninstalling ABAQUS
===================

This section describes the procedures used to remove an ABAQUS version or ABAQUS licensing
from your computer.

------------------------
UNIX platforms
------------------------

To remove an ABAQUS version:
---------------------------------------------
On UNIX platforms a version of ABAQUS can be removed safely by simply deleting the version-
specific directory and all subordinate files. Your user account must have permission to
delete the ABAQUS version-specific directory.

1. Type the command

% cd <abaqus_dir>

where <abaqus_dir> is the ABAQUS parent directory.

2. Change the permissions of the directories and files by entering

% chmod -R 755 6.3-n

where n refers to the version you wish to delete.

3. Remove the version by typing

% rm -rf 6.3-n

where n refers to the version you wish to delete.

To remove ABAQUS licensing:
--------------------------------------------
This procedure must be performed on the license server host, and you must be logged in as
root or the owner of the license server. Before you can remove the license server and
license files, you must terminate the license server using the FLEXlm utility lmdown
(see lmdown, Section D.3.2 in the ABAQUS Site Guide).

     * If your license server host is not used to run ABAQUS, you should remove the entire
