THIS DOCUMENT SUPPLEMENTS THE OFREADME.HLP FILE. PLEASE SEE OFREADME.HLP FOR COMPLETE INFORMATION ON NETWORK INSTALLATIONS OF MICROSOFT OFFICE. Creating an Administrative Installation for a Multi-platform Environment =================================================== A single administrative image cannot provide installations for all platforms of Microsoft Windows NT. For each platform that will be used, you need to create a separate administrative image. To create an installation that can be installed locally or run from the server: For an Intel-build version of the administrative installation, connect to the server from an Intel-based workstation, and follow the instructions to create an administrative install. For an Alpha-build version of the administrative installation, connect to the server from an Alpha-based workstation, and follow the instructions to create an administrative install. To create an installation that installs the application locally, and will not run from the server: Copy the complete program directory from the CD to the server. For example, copy the entire \excel.nt directory from the CD to the server hard drive. This will enable you to run setup from the server location, and create local installations of the applications. Long Directory Name with Spaces - Use Underscore Instead ============================================= If you install an Office application in a directory with a long name that includes spaces, maintenance mode and some variations of OLE will not work. Instead of using spaces in your directory names, use underscore characters when you install your application. Long names with spaces will cause the Insert Excel Object and Insert Word Object commands to fail with the message "Cannot Locate <*.exe>". Using the underscore character for the application directory during installation will prevent this problem. If you have used long directory names with spaces, and you run maintenance mode setup, you may receive the error message "Cannot find *.DLL." Delete your Winword or Excel directory, taking care to back up any data files, and run setup again from the diskettes. Microsoft Office Manager Not Launching Word or Microsoft Excel ================================================== A 32-bit application installed in a directory with a long filename cannot be started from Microsoft Office Manager as it is initially set up. To create buttons that will work with long filenames: 1. From the Microsoft Office Manager menu, choose Customize. 2. On the Toolbar tab, choose Add. 3. Choose Browse, and find WINWORD.EXE or EXCEL.EXE. 4. To remove the extra button, choose Customize, and clear the check box for "Microsoft Word" or "Microsoft Excel".
