Microsoft Systems Management Server and HP Openview for Windows Integration Files Functionality Microsoft and HP have worked together to integrate Microsoft Systems Management Serverand HP OpenView for Windows 7.2 products. Both SMS and OV/Win must be run on the same Windows NT machine. This document describes the integrated functionality, the files used to achieve this functionality, and the installation instructions. Please read this whole document before beginning the installation. The integration will result in the following functionality: From SMS An OpenView icon is displayed in the SMS Personal Computer Properties for a selected computer. When the icon is clicked, OV is brought to the foreground and the OV map window is displayed with the corresponding OpenView symbol selected. The OpenView icon is only displayed when OpenView is installed on the machine running SMS and the selected machine has either an IP or IPX address. OpenView must be started before the machine properties are shown in order for the icon to appear. From OpenView The user will be able to view the SMS Personal Computer Properties dialog box for a selected computer and also be able to run SMS directly from OpenView. After correctly installing the integration files there will be a new menu selection in OpenView called SMS under the Monitor menu. Options under the "SMS" menu selection are "Properties..." to view the SMS Personal Computer Properties dialog box for a selected computer, "Run SMS" to start the SMS Admin program, and "Events" to view the NT event log for the local system. Files The files used for the integration are: OVSMS.EXE OpenView application that runs SMS.EXE and MACHVIEW.DLL (machine properties dialog). OVSMS.EXE basically provides the hooks into the SMS database structure. OVHERM.DLL SMS library that displays OpenView icon in the left pane of the Personal Computer Properties window when a machine is selected. OVHERM.DLL is 32-bit code that sends messages to OpenView to bring up the OV Map in a separate window. HPDB.EXE Program to register OVHERM.DLL with SMS Installation Instructions 1. First install HP OpenView for Windows and Microsoft Systems Management Server separately. 2. Next, run the SETUP program in the installation directory. The user will be prompted for the directory where SMS was installed. 3. In order to update the SMS database with the integration components, the user will be prompted for the SMS database information. Enter the server name, database name (e.g. SMS), and a login id and password as used to access the SMS database. 4. When HP OpenView and SMS are next run, the integration menus and icon will be displayed. Miscellaneous Notes 1. When running OpenView on a TCP/IP only network (i.e. OV was not installed with the IPX selection checked) and using the Windows NT TCP/IP stack, an error message box may appear when OV is started This is due to the Windows NT TCP/IP stack not supporting raw sockets, which OpenView uses for polling. The integration components should still work, however. This message may be prevented by removing the NETMON= line from the [OpenViewApps] section of ovwin.ini in the OpenView directory (C:\OV). Future versions of HP Openview will work around this limitation. 2. At least one Netware server is required for OpenView to discover IPX machines.
