SOFTWARE USED TO PRODUCE DOCUMENTATION FILES -------------------------------------------- Microsoft Windows for Workgroups version 3.11 Microsoft Word for Windows version 2.0 Microsoft TrueType (R) Font Pack 1 Aldus (R) Freehand (R) for Windows version 3.1 Linotype (R) or Adobe (R) Letter Gothic printer fonts (Type 1 fonts) Special softfont files provided by Microsoft: DOCS\FONTS\MSICONS.FON DOCS\FONTS\MSICONS2.TTF DOCS\FONTS\MSICONS2.PFM DOCS\FONTS\MSICONS2.PS ********************** *SETUP CONSIDERATIONS* ********************** PRINTER SETUP ------------- To print these PostScript documentation files, you will need a 100% PostScript-compatible print device. Download the MSICONS2.PS file from the DOCS\FONTS subdirectory to your PostScript printer before you send files to print. Because it is stored in RAM, you must copy the file to the printer every time you turn the printer on. When the printer is set up, send the PostScript files (*.DTF), located in the DTF subdirectory of each book, to the printer with the command: copy filename.dtf LPTx where: filename.dtf = filename.extension and x = port number. For example, to print sigfrt.dtf to LPT2, type: copy sigfrt.dtf lpt2 NOTE: This is the easiest method for printing the files. If you wish to view the files online using Microsoft Word for Windows, then you will need to install a printer driver and fonts according to the following instructions in order for the document to appear the same as in the printed version. FONT INFORMATION & SETUP ------------------------ Before installation, check your printer manual and the TrueType Font Pack 1 manual to determine if your printer has enough memory for all the PostScript fonts listed below. Also, check your printer manual to see which, if any, fonts are resident. You must have a licensed copy of Letter Gothic that is mentioned under "Software Used To Produce Documentation Files" earlier in this document. These documents use TrueType Font Pack 1 screen fonts. You must license a copy of the Font Pack for each computer you use to edit files. SOFT FONTS To use MSICONS, you need to copy the three MSICONS2 files supplied to you in the DOCS\FONTS directory to your WIN31\SYSTEM directory (assuming that your Microsoft Windows directory is called WIN31). Add soft font information to your WIN.INI file found in the Windows directory. Open your WIN.INI file using any ASCII text editor. Add the following information to each of the blocks in your WIN.INI file that refers to PostScript output. An example of what the block should look like follows: [PostScript,LPT1] device=5 feed1=1 SoftFonts=1 SoftFont1=C:\WIN31\SYSTEM\MSICONS2.PFM orient=1 Note: If you have one or more soft fonts currently represented in your WIN.INI file, SoftFonts=n should correspond to the number of SoftFonts you have installed. To install the MSIcons screen font, choose the Fonts icon from the Control Panel, and then add the MSIcons (TrueType) font. For final output, you must license the Letter Gothic font from Linotype or Adobe (Type I). FONT MAPPING If you wish to print these files from Microsoft Word for Windows instead of sending the .DTF files directly to the printer, see the following information. To map the TrueType fonts correctly to PostScript fonts for output on your printer, do the following: 1. From the Windows Control Panel, select the Printers icon. Highlight the PostScript printer driver you wish to use. Select Setup, Options, Advanced in the dialog boxes as they appear. 2. Select the Use Substitution Table check box, and then choose the Edit Substitution Table button. Make sure that you have Send to Printer as Adobe Type 1 selected. 3. Select a TrueType font used in the document in the For TrueType Font list, and then select its corresponding (map) PostScript font from the Use Printer Font list on the right. The following table lists the TrueType fonts used in these documents and their corresponding PostScript fonts. For more information, see your Word for Windows User's Guide.
