June 1995 Subdirectories of this directory contain updated versions of the following drivers: RDR.SYS DLC.SYS Each of these is accompanied by a corresponding debug version (RDR.DBG or DLC.DBG). This file contains information about these drivers and how to install them. The information about DLC.SYS follows the Notes about RDR.SYS and RDR.DBG. Notes about RDR.SYS and RDR.DBG for use with Microsoft(R) SNA Server version 2.11 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The SNA Server CD-ROM includes an update to the Windows NT operating system V3.5. It applies to both Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server, and to the original release (build 807), Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 (but not Service Pack 2b). This update avoids problems in establishing client- server connections to SNA Server and in retaining additional APPC sessions on a workstation when one session is terminated. NOTE: this update may only be applied to Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server, V3.5, Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 (but not Service Pack 2b). Applying the update to any other release or hotfix of the operating system can disrupt all network access to or from the system. To copy the updated RDR.SYS file to an appropriate Windows NT-based server or client: 1. On the computer to which you plan to copy RDR.SYS, change to the following directory: \SYSTEM32 2. Run the Windows version utility by typing winver 3. In the resulting dialog box, check that the second line reads "Version 3.50 (Build 807)." or "Version 3.50 (Build 807: Service Pack )", where is 1 or 2. 4. Insert the SNA Server CD into a CD-ROM drive that is accessible to the computer you are updating. If the CD-ROM drive is not a local drive on the computer you are updating, establish a network connection from that computer to the drive. 5. On the SNA server or Windows NT-based client, change to the drive containing the Windows NT software. 6. Change to the following directory: \\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS 7. Type RENAME RDR.SYS RDR.OLD This ensures that you have a backup copy of the RDR.SYS file that was originally installed. 8. Type the command indicated by the following table: Hardware Command to type ---------------------------------------------------- Intel-based COPY :\NT35FIX\I386\RDR.SYS Alpha COPY :\NT35FIX\ALPHA\RDR.SYS MIPS COPY :\NT35FIX\MIPS\RDR.SYS In the preceding command, is the drive containing the SNA Server CD. The command copies the appropriate version of RDR.SYS into the current directory, that is, the \\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory. 9. Restart the computer. To do this, in Program Manager, from the File menu, choose Shutdown. In the resulting dialog box, select Shutdown and Restart, and then choose OK. If you apply the update to RDR.SYS and you have Windows NT symbols on your computer, you should update the symbols for this file as well. You may have Windows NT symbols installed if you have obtained a software development kit (SDK) or similar software. (If you do not have Windows NT symbols on your computer, the following procedure does not apply to you.) To copy the updated RDR.DBG file to an appropriate SNA server or Windows NT- based client 1. Make sure that you carry out the preceding procedure for copying the RDR.SYS file to the SNA server or Windows NT-based client. 2. Insert the SNA Server CD into a CD-ROM drive that is accessible to the computer you are updating. If the CD-ROM drive is not a local drive on the computer you are updating, establish a network connection from that computer to the drive. 3. On the SNA server or Windows NT-based client, change to the drive containing the Windows NT software. 4. Change to the following directory: \\SYMBOLS\SYS 5. Note that this is not the same directory as in the preceding procedure. 6. Type COPY RDR.DBG RDR.OLD 7. This ensures that you have a backup copy of the RDR.DBG file that was originally installed. 8. Type the command indicated by the following table: Hardware Command to type ---------------------------------------------------- Intel-based COPY :\NT35FIX\I386\RDR.DBG Alpha COPY :\NT35FIX\ALPHA\RDR.DBG MIPS COPY :\NT35FIX\MIPS\RDR.DBG 9. In the preceding command, is the drive containing the SNA Server CD. The command copies the appropriate version of RDR.DBG into the \\SYMBOLS\SYS directory. Notes about DLC.SYS and DLC.DBG for use with Microsoft(R) SNA Server version 2.11 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The procedures in this README.TXT file apply to all SNA servers running Windows NT version 3.5 and version 3.51. Subdirectories in the this directory contain an updated version of the DLC.SYS driver, as well as a corresponding debug version, DLC.DBG. The updated driver allows installation of two Token Ring or Ethernet adapters, both of which are used to carry 802.2/DLC traffic. Note that it is possible to run multiple logical 802.2/DLC connections on the same Token Ring or Ethernet adapter. Using more than one adapter is needed only when the adapter is suspected of causing a bottleneck. The following procedure explains how to update the file called DLC.SYS by copying it from the SNA Server CD to the appropriate directory on the hard disk. > To copy the updated DLC.SYS file to an appropriate Windows NT-based server ------------------------------------------------------------- 1. On the computer to which you plan to copy DLC.SYS, change to the following directory: \\SYSTEM32 2. Insert the SNA Server CD into a CD-ROM drive that is accessible to the computer you are updating. If the CD-ROM drive is not a local drive on the computer you are updating, establish a network connection from that computer to the drive. 3. To do this, in Program Manager, from the File menu, choose Shutdown. In the resulting dialog box, select Shutdown and Restart, and then choose OK. Updated file needed for Windows NT-based computers containing symbols (for debugging) -------------------------------------------- If you have Windows NT symbols on your computer, that is, if you have obtained a software development kit (SDK) or similar software, and you carried out the previous procedure, you should also carry out the following procedure. (If you do not have Windows NT symbols on your computer, the following procedure does not apply to you.) > To copy the updated DLC.DBG file to an appropriate SNA server ------------------------------------------------------ 1. Make sure that you carry out the preceding procedure for copying the DLC.SYS file to the SNA server. 2. Change to the following directory: \\SYMBOLS\SYS Note that this is not the same directory as in the preceding procedure. 4. Type COPY DLC.DBG DLC.OLD This ensures that you have a backup copy of the DLC.DBG file that was originally installed. 5.
